Here are some pics from my trip at the end of September to the West Elk Wilderness in Colorado. Finally saw the aspens. Good hiking, with LOTS of trails in this huge wilderness area.

High, too. Storm Pass was 12,600 feet -- twice as high as the highest peaks on the A.T. For that matter, just flying into Colorado Springs was as high as the highest peak on the A.T. Up from there, to 7,700 at Gunnison, to 8,500 or so at the Mill Branch trailhead, to an average of about 9,500 on most of the trails.

Still, there's something about the Appalachians that is very special and unique.
