I can't answer your question with any authority, or certainty.

I can tell you, however, that as of December, there was no sign of demolition or construction at Kinsman Pond. The shelter was not in a particularly bad state of disrepair.

If I was a betting man, I'd say the same shelter is still there today.

Was there two weeks ago (July 14th) and it's still up, work is slated for this season. Will find out this weekend from AMC and post. Tentsite most likely wont be effected during construction.

I definitely appreciate the effort if you find out from the AMC.

the shelter is being taken down in late August and rebuilt in a log cabin style, like Gyot, in early September. the total time it might be down will probably be less than a week.

Why is it being replaced, Stephanie, is it because of the low-headroom?

I dont know exactly but from what I've been tolld by my boss it sounds like a couple of things. 1.it is an old shelter that needed sertain structural repairs 2.the site needed more space to accomodate the visitors and 3.they got some funding and the NPS's Okay

Wish I'd seen this post when it was fresh, but anyways... here is the offical word from the AMC's Shelter and Campsite program:

Kinsman Pond Shelter is being replaced and will be unavailable for use between August 31 and October 12, 2007.

Tents sites are available. Please plan accordingly.

Concerning the condition of the shelter, its not the worst I've seen but it is 41 years old and showing typical signs of old age (for shelters). The AMC got a grant from the ATC to spend on shelters and they chose to replace one that is older and sees moderate use. Sorry Eliza and Ethan, maybe next time. An interesting sidebar about Kinsman. Every scrap of original building material was hand carried up the Kinsman Trail from Rt116.
