View Full Version : Spinnaker Cloth for a Tarp

Anyone know how a Spinnaker Cloth tarp would hold up to life on the AT? I use to sail a 27' boat in the Pacific with a large spinnaker sail before so I am somewhat familiar with the material. However, I've never experienced a storm on the trail before.

I should probably just go with 30d SilNylon but this seems like a good in-between weight from what I really want, Cuben Fiber, but don't want to pay for. Oware has a 8x10' Spinnaker tarp that weighs 9.5 oz. compared to the same tarp in 30d at 13.5 oz. My quilt weight has increased on me because I need an extra wide one for my broad shoulders so pinching weight a bit more on the tarp would be nice if the material can hold up.

I do see people using Spinnakers for ground clothes which surprises me so maybe it isn't not that crazy of an idea for tarp material.

Thanks

I used the .97 spinnaker from thru-hiker.com for my homemade tarp, and i'll never go back to silnylon. Cuben is expensive stuff, and too fragile (IMO) and isn't a good material for first time tarp users.
