I found on the National ParkService web site that all of the shelters on the AT through the Smokys are reservation only. I was wondering if this is carved in stone or if there are places that need no reservation along that strip. Do I need to make reservations or not? Maybe some seasoned thru's could give me an idea of the technicalities of the smokies and Blue ridge mountains along the AT. (i am starting 08 nobo). bears make me a little nervous.

Thru-hikers (defined as hikers starting and ending their hikes 50 or more miles from the park entrances) are not required to have permits to stay in shelters. Thru-hikers must stay in the shelters, or if the shelters are full, tent nearby. Stays in each shelter are limited to one night, unless you are sick or injured.

If you are going NOBO and start in March, you will find the Smokies crowded with thru-hikers and spring breakers.

Also you will self-register before entering the park...I believe you can do it at the Fontana shelter.

All of the selters along the AT require reservation unless you are a long-distance hiker thru-hiking the park. A long-distance hiker is someone who has hiked 50 or more miles prior to entering the park and plans to thru-hike the park itself. Everyone must register before entering the park, but thru's don't have to reserve shelter sites.
