Has anyone here on white blaze ever hiked all or most of the COOS Trail? This new trail is in far northern New Hampshire and goes more or less from the White Mountains north to the Canadian Border. It is supposed to be a truly Wilderness foot path.

I may hike the trail one day. Would like to hear of experiences of anyone who has hiked this trail.

David,

I've hiked portions of the Cohos. If you've done the 4000 footers, as I believe you have, then you've hiked sections of the Cohos.

The Cohos is made-up of many existing trails, interconnected to stretch from US 302 to the Canadian border. If you bagged Isolation following the Davis Path along Montalban Ridge, you've seen the southern end of the Trail. After crossing the AT at Eisenhower, the Cohos drops down to the Base Road (cog), parallels 302 and then climbs Cherry Mtn (Martha) before dropping to Pondicherry and across Jefferson Meadows.

The next section, will also be familiar to you. After crossing US 2, the Cohos follows the Starr King trail, over to Waumbek and continues along Kilkenny Ridge to South Pond, passing Cabot along the way.

From this point northward, the Trail becomes much more isolated: Percy Peaks, Nash Stream Forest, Wilderness Ski Area, Table Rock to the Balsam's Resort in Dixville Notch. North of the Balsams, the Cohos follows snowmobile trails, and logging roads towards the Connecticut Lakes, to the canadian border.

In his newsletter last winter, Kim Nilsen, the founder of the Trail, announced the closing of the Cohos Trail. With the offer of help, from some dedicated folks, the trail remains open. The group is actively seeking support.

I have Nilsen's guidebook, if you would like to borrow it. Don't expect anything like the AMC guidebooks, Wingfoot's, the Databook, or the Companion. It is written in prose and contains history and lots of anecdotal information. Good winter reading, but nothing I would carry on a hike.

Once you get north of Jefferson it is very remote and you will be alone. There's logging roads, road walks and beautiful mountains. You can do without the book, but better carry the maps and know how to navigate with a compass. Look here for some more info http://www.cohostrail.org/

Greg

ps - resupply up north is not too easy, but do-able.

Looks like a nice trail. Plan on hiking it myself next summer. Check out the link GPK gave you as well as the one below.

See you on the trail... QC
