I don't know about the other maps, but I do know that the National Geographic Society has produced a revised 2007 map of the Smokies (GSMNP). I recently saw it at a local outfitter.

P.S. It now includes the BMT.

I attached a Doc file with the trail data from 2007, in an easy-to-read format. It took me 5 pages to go from Amicalola to Fontana, including the legend page.

(1.3 MB, if that matters.) Permission given to all to use for whatever purpose strikes you, commercial or non. :)

Edit: SGT Rock had an article that tied together all of the disparate parts of a BMT guide/map setup. Does anyone remember where that one is? Thanks!

Edit2: I put a headings line on each page and put the legend of abbreviations on the final page as a separate page.

INPUT AND (sensible, serious) CRITICISM REQUESTED!!

When I compiled the list last year, I used the info based on what the ATC listed. I just checked and ATC still lists the other GSMNP map.

I'm going to update the map list soon and will post here. Looks like a couple of new maps are coming out January 2008.

I'm still having problems opening up this file. Does anyone know what this mesage means and how I can fix it?
"Works cannot open ____________. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt."

Possibility 1:
MS Works is not MS Word & there may be a problem in translating the file.

Solution 1:
Try to open the .doc from w/i your WordPad application (accessible on your program menu-- used to be under the Accessories folder in XP, don't know about vista).

Solution 2:
Use free word processing software from openoffice.org @ http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/contribute.html?product=OpenOffice.org&os=winwjre&lang=en-US&version=2.3.1 which should have current convertors.

Solution 3:
Update the convertors in MS Works (somewhere on Microsoft's site; blech).

Possibility 2:
The file is marked as 'in use' by the OS.

Solution 1:
Restart the computer & try to open again.

Possibility 3:
The file did not download properly and is corrupt.

Solution 1:
Download again and open.

My bet is on the first scenario. I would first try to open w/ WordPad. Your system probably defaults to MS works, which means you will need to open WordPad and then either drag n drop the .doc there or open the doc by selecting 'open' and then locating the file's location on your machine.
