View Full Version : 70th trail anniversary
70th Anniversary: Seven decades ago on an August 14 Civilian Conservation Corps workers connected the northern and southern sections of the Appalachian Trail a few miles south of Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine.
The route of the trail has changed many times since then. This trail will never be finally finished as volunteers each year make improvements. But it first became a connected 2,000 + mile trail in August of 1937.

Have there been any 70th anniversary celebrations along the trail this year?

I may hAVE BEEN the only one who noticed, I was looking for photos to fill the remaining hole in the AMC newsletter, Wilderness Matters, that I edit, and ran across a 20-year-old photo of the placement of a plaque commemorating the event.
