View Full Version : D. I.Y. Slap Strap?
I saw a photo of the slap strap for the ENO and I had a forehead slapping "Duh!" moment.
Why not just take my primary support lines, double them, and tie knots about every 12" or so? Then I can take the tail of the line, pass it through the head loop - just like the slap strap - and clip on with a carabiner at the appropriate knot for the tightness I need?
Whaddya think? Will it work?
Next time I go out I gonna try it :-?
Don't see why it wouldn't work, especially since that's how my "travel hammock's" lines came from the manufacturer.:) You might end up needing slightly longer lines to hang it from trees that are far apart, but that's about the only down side I can think of right now...

Most everybody I have talked to have gone to a ring buckle or cinch buckle and strap. It's very light, good strength and much more adjustable than the ENO setup.

I had this same "Duh" thought a bit back...it seemed the loops in the Slap Straps were never "exactly" where I needed them...
Then I thought about doing away with the loops altogether..
I sewed loops in the ends of two pieces of webbing...making two straps..
They go around the tree the same as Slap Straps but there aren't any other loops. I tie a simple slip knot into the webbing where I need it, put a small carabiner into it and attach the hammock to the biner. The knot tightens down onto the biner...which prevents the knot from pulling through itself.
Takes maybe a minute per side....take down is a matter of removing the biner and pulling the knot out of the webbing - nothing to untie.
I am really...really.....REALLY happy with this set up.
? Anybody know where to get 1/4 inch Spectra webbing in 12' lenghts ?
SpiritWind, you have photos of that webbing setup? I tried the ringbuckles, but I am not fond of them... looking for other options.

Nope, but I'm not doing much right now so I'll dig out the camera and straps and take a few.
Okay...I took a couple shots of the webbing and tying the knot and posted them in my gallery.
When comparing the weight of the ENO biners I decided I could do better with these bigger biners... they're big enough for me to attach all sorts of crap and weigh about the same as the SS ENO biners.
I have used 1/8 webbing but sleep better with the 1 inch.
These straps attach to the tree, rock, van, truck or whatever the same way Slap Straps do...but you tie in the loop where you need it instead of having loops pre sewn at intervals.
The webbing in the photo is ? 14 feet long... I figured I'd cut it when I figured out what lenght would be best....I've found the extra is useful to tie and use as clothesline...etc....so for now it's a matter of "better to have and not need than to need and not have"... There have been times when I needed more to reach a tre or rock.
This set up takes about a minute per side to get the hammock the way I like it...no knots to tie or untie and so far the biner has worked great as a drip point so long as the hammock line is "up" on the biner.

Spiritwind,
Thanks for the photos, I've been looking for an easier way to hang my hammock. I just want to make sure I've got it straight:
Wrap the webbing around a tree and run the free end through the sewn loop; then tie the slip knot at the free end and place the 'biner in the slip knot; then clip the 'biner to the hammock (where you've tied a loop in the end of the hammock rope). You adjust the slip knot so you have the proper tension.
Is that basically right? Can you tighten this *after* you've attached both sides of the hammock?
Thanks.

Exactly, you have it right...if the slip knot needs to be adjusted a considerable distance it's easier to pull the knot out and tie another where you need it.
Thanks, Fanatic. I think I have some buckles available from a harness that I don't use, and I have some strapping material from truck tie-downs and that sort of thing, so I am going to experiment and see what I can come up with.

Careful with the buckles you use. Test them out with some good crash pads.:D The 1" cinch buckles are the only ones most everyone is using on hammock forums. Seems to be the only place you can buy this exact buckle. They dont give a listed weight limit but do say rated for life support.

If that offer isn't taken from your other correspondent, I'd love to get them.
I'm using 2" descending rings right now. No real probs, but it'd be nice not to have to un-tie and re-tie the slip knot to adjust for initial stretch!
