Howdy all,

Looking to replace an old North Face pack I have and found some decent packs from Eureka, but was scared by the insanely low prices...4300cu for 99$????

I am having a hard time finding anything on the company or reviews of the gear...can anyone help?

Thanks!

Kelly

I picked up a Eureka Apex tent for a song once and was pleased with its quality. I passed it along to a nephew since it was a little heavier than I wanted to carry after awhile.

Old manufacturer, have always been a mid-tier supplier. Thier products are usually a copy of a top-tier design. Totally adequate, but not cutting edge, particularly when it comes to weight.

Their Timberline tents have been around for decades. They make two grades, comsumer - lighter weight, not as durable. Their higher grade is an outfitter - higher weight, more durable (used for years by Scouting).

I have a one-man tent, not sure of the model. I use it for car camping or in base camping situations - too heavy for serious backpacking. I'm not familiar with any of their packs, but if you like it and are satisfied with the weight, I would assume that the quality will be adequate for it's intended use.

I haven't looked at their packs, but have been using their tents about thirty years. I've been happy with their products... dependable, user friendly, reasonably priced. I would expect that philosophy to go into their packs, as well.

I, too, have used their tents for years (car camping and backpacking) and have been very pleased with the quality and performance. They stand behind their products, too - if you have trouble with their workmanship, they'll make it right.

Eureka and CampTrails (the backpack division) are both owned by Johnson Products. I see that you're posting from CT; Eureka/CampTrails has a factory store in Binghamton, NY (west side of the Susquehanna River along Rt. 7) - they have lots of their products displayed there. They also sell factory seconds (color blemishes, re-stitched stuff) for lots less than first quality, and they guarantee THAT stuff, too. If you can get over to the store, you can see some of their packs on display.

I thrued with a Eureka Tent. As other have said it's a bit heavy. However, it has never leaked in some masive wind/rain/hail storms. I kind of like that feature.

My daughter and I have both used Eureka and Camp Trails packs for several years, two or three short trips per year. They have held up fine. Nor can I complain about the fit, capacity, or comfort. I'm happy with what we got, considering the low price.

Long Time Eureka fan here. starting with a Camp Trails pack Circa 1972 (They later bought Camp Trails). I used to sell eureka Products at the Old style Dick's Sporting Goods before the massive epansion in the early 90's.

You can always access steeply Discounted Class A and Class B Eureka and Camp Trails Priducts here (http://www.eurekacampingctr.com/eureka/about.asp?s_id=0&), or contact them at

I look to Eureka as an old stand by - an old friend if you will, having used at least a dozen models of their tents over the last 2 decades - back when carrying a 5 lb tent was lightweight. Pity they sold of Jack Wolfskin about 5-6years ago. JW seems to now only be available in Europe again.

Are we talking about the same Eureka? I think some other firm may be using the name and sells primarily sil-nylon products.

Eureka did come out with a sylnylon version of the Spitfire Ul (http://campmor.stores.yahoo.net/28316.html)several years ago. Otherwise they still have a few backpacking tents, military contracts and also a lot of commerical tentmaking.

The Eureka that does the nice A frame tents, the low cost packs, and the silnylon products - all the same company. I have their 8x10 silnylon tarp for my hammock and it works very well. Quality is above average, price was definitly good.

Check Backpacker Magazine archives. I remember them testing a Eureka backpack a few years ago but don't remember when.

I beleive it was the Talon - Back around 99. I remember stopping in at the Factory outlet when I lived very near there back before 2000. I am now about 2 hours away and don't get up there as much

I salvaged netting, zippers and some webbing from an old Timberline to sew the tarptent I'm currently working on.

Good quality stuff, almost wish the dog hadn't chewed up the pole connectors...

You can get the pole connector replacements at the outlet for about $5.99 in one of my previous post. though now it sounds like they wouldn't be of help :D
