I just got an email from our Ridgerunner with the following info:
Bly Gap camp site is dry
Plumorchard Shelter is very good
Deep Gap Shelter is dry
Addis Gap is very good
Sassafras Gap is Dry
Tray Mtn. is dry
The Cheese Factory is running
Blue Mtn.--There is a small trickle coming from the source, however the pool that it is flowing into is quite stagnant. The water doesnt seem to be flowing out beyond the pool at a very fast rate at all.
The next campsite south of Blue Mtn is dry.
Chattahoochee Gap is dry.
I'll keep posting his updates under this thread as I get them

Low Gap is running---down by the shelter the stream is dry, but if you go up stream near the campsites the water is running
Hogpen Gap is running
Whitley Gap shelter is dry
It is dry from Neels Gap to Hogpen Gap
Slaughter Creek water source is dry
Woods Hole Shelter is dry
Woody Gap is dry
Gooch Gap is running
Gooch Shelter is running
Bottom line is to fill up whenever you have the chance.
Is there any updates to the water situation since the 8/30 post by briarpatch?
Doing a southbound Dicks Creek Gap to Springer next week.
Any info would be most helpful. Thanks.

I'm leaving from USFS 42 this Saturday, up to Springer and back down then off to Dicks Creek Gap. I've been monitoring the water updates for a few weeks with an update from the GATC emailed to me yesterday. GATC says "most springs are dry, carry 2-4 liters between sources". Attached report from ridgerunner was about two weeks old but fairly thorough. Here's a compilation of all the second hand info I've gathered to support my trek:
Source at Stover Creek shelter is dry, a few minutes hike north or south will get you water.
Everything north to Grassy gap (which is a trickle) is flowing.
Stream +/- 2 miles south of Woody Gap is flowing.
Woody Gap is dry.
No report on Dan Gap to Turkey Stamp.
Woods Hole Shelter is dry.
Slaughter Gap is dry.
Neels Gap to Hogpen Gap is dry.
Hogpen Gap is flowing.
Low Gap is flowing.
Chattahoochee Gap is dry.
Old Rocky Knob site is a trickle.
Blue Mountain is a trickle, collection pool is stagnant.
Rocky Mountain is moist and can be dammed-up to form a pool.
Indian Grave gap is a trickle.
Cheese Factory is flowing.
Tray Mountain shelter is dry.
Sassafras Gap is dry.
Addis Gap is flowing good.
Deep Gap shelter is dry.
Stream south of Dicks Creek Gap is flowing.

According to Puff and Mule, water was available at Stover, Hawks, and Justice. Below are water sources we used between Neels Gap and Dicks Creej Gap.
9-16 Low Gap Shelter - water
9/17 Blue Mountain Shelter - water
9/18 Cheese Factory Site-water not at designated spot. Follow blue blaze until gravel road, take left and a little ways up at campsites go right until stream bed. If dry follow stream bed until small trickle and pools appear.
9/18 Tray Mountain Shelter- no water, two small puddles
9/19 Addis Gap- water:)
I am starting a 80 mile section hike starting in NC and finishing at Springer I would like all the updated water info you have!
Every Blessing
I'm starting that section on the 1st but starting at Springer. This is the info I got from GATC 10 days ago and imagine still valid.
Quote:
Pretty much all of the streams and creeks are still running, but the springs
are drying up or are already dry. Carry extra water and fill whenever you
get the chance. I heard over the weekend that Hawk Mountain is still running
pretty well, but that Tray Mountain has dried up. I would carry 2-4 liters,
if I were doing any extended distance hiking in Georgia right now. I'll
append the latest updates I've had from the Ridgerunner below, this info is
about 2 weeks old.
==========================
Black Gap and Springer Mtn. are dry and have been for a while- making the
approach trail pretty tough. I've been letting people know that if things
get really tough the steam about a mile and a quarter north of Springer is
running. I know no one wants to go further, but if someone is in need its
alot better than huffing it 8 back down the approach or 4 or so into the
Hike Inn.
Besides that everything seems to be running.
The source behind Stover Creek Shelter is dry, but a few minutes hike north
or south on the AT from the shelter and the stream is great
Hawk Mt. and Gooch are running fine.
Its the best stretch or trail as far as water is concerned.

I hiked from Unicoi Gap over Rocky to Tray Mountain Shelter and back a few days ago.
At that time the stream on Rocky Mtn was damp but it was impossible to create a dam to trap water. There were spots in the mud where folks had obviously been able to do that recently but at this point there was no water in any of the holes.
The water at the Cheese Factory was dry. I didn't follow the source downhill to see if I could locate anything as it was so dry at the head.
The water at Tray Gap shelter was a slightly damp spot. I have seen it powder dry in the past and expect it will be again soon. We had a small shower in the area of Rocky and Tray the night before which may explain the damp conditons on Rocky.

I'm heading up for a quick few days in he mountains. Any updates for;
