Odd, the online reservation sites show several sites on the Fern loop as open those three days. I'm going to call Juniper in the daylight and see what's up.

In any case, if there's a place for me to hang hammock, I'm in for the whole tour. And I'm in for splitting site costs, either my own or if someone's letting me share their site. If necessary I'll just go string my bed up across the border. What the heck.

Thanks for the info. If I have any luck in the (later) AM, I'll post the good word.

Best,
Mal/Half Step

NB: There's a dude called Halfstep on WB---it's not me, though. My reasons for the name are obvious when I take my shoes off. :D

I read elsewhere (Ed Speer's Yahoo site)that it is against the rules to hang a hammock from a tree in the state of Florida.

Has anyone checked this (for an exemption0 at the Juniper site? )

I'm in Winter Haven and thinking of coming up, but not if I can't hang.

Hmm, if so, I've never been hassled. Besides, Juniper is Forest Service, and we hang hammock all through the Ocala National Forest.

But I wouldn't mind being a test case. . . .

Peace out,

My son and I are coming Friday night. Count us in for the steaks. I will bring corn on the cob to wrap in foil and roast in the fire.

We will have to leave on Saturday night. My daughter is getting baptized (by me) on Sunday morning and I don't want to miss it.

Ocala is a National Forest, not state property. Not saying you can, but I do know you cant hang in state parks. Never stopped me though....

Kids,

I've officially crapped out on trying to reserve another site at Juniper.

Regardless, I'll be there Friday (probably early, to try and score a site) through Sunday, with my big canoe/paddles (Amigi, take note) & my six-string, hangin' hammock somewhere or the other. I don't know yet what I'm fetching for the pot-luck, but I'm thinking hard. Any suggestions?

This is gonna be a blast!

I've talked to several park rangers and state wildlife officers about hanging here in Florida. Not one of them was aware of any rules against hammock camping. I'm not saying there is no law but if there is, there seems to be no interest in enforcement.

It is illegal to HANG in any of the State Parks here in FL. Believe me they will make you take it down and have no sympathy... However, I do not believe that the same rules apply in the National Forest, as they have never bothered me there.

I didn't really finish the GET hike, a number of issues. However, I got in a good 500+ miles and will be picking up some more of it once spring arrives.

For now it is Florida hiking and possibly some in Georgia. -- I am trying to open my home up to FL Trail hikers this winter so that may cut down some on my hiking, I'll play that by ear. I get my first hiker on Nov 3rd. He maybe right on track to hike through Ocala same time we are all there for the WB Gathering.

Thanks for the offer to share your site, btw. Too bad HH's husband and Trailtalker can't make it. Last (only) time I saw her, she and a couple others ended up toting my food bag. But things will probably stay pretty fluid twixt now and then.

Florida Administrative Code 62-D is the 'law' in question. It does state that nothing may be tied to trees (this IS to include tarps and I can only assume that this also makes bear bagging illegal!). The justification is to protect native species. Therefore, the State of Florida suggests that you use a camper trailer to lessen the impact on Florida's environment. Like HH said, it is only enforceable in a Florida State Park....if they find you.

Brought to you by the state that elected "W".

No worries; Juniper Springs is part of Ocala National Forest not a state park. I spoke with someone at the BLM yesterday about this reg and he said there are only a handful of hammock restrictions on fed lands. They are all in areas of very high use; which makes sense.

OK. It's time for me to admit it.

I bought a HH Backpacker Asym in the spring of '05 for my LT hike and I could never get it suspended correctly during my shake down hikes. I ended up carrying a Hubba, which I did not like because it was too much weight for too little space. Since then I have been carrying either a Tarptent Rainbow or Six Moons Europa '05 on my sections.

Since there are so many experienced hangers coming, can I bring my HH with me and get a clinic on hanging correctly? If I can get it right, I may carry it on some solo hikes in warm weather.

It'd be my pleasure. First thing we have to do is switch out the stock HH suspension. I'll bring the necessary equipment to modify (noninvasive) so you can try it out.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Troops,

I've modified my Hennessy to use climbing rings and web straps, and my Tree Huggers. This is the method from Just Jeff's page (http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearRingBuckleSupports.html) on this. It really works quite well.

I used short pieces of webbing instead of Spectra cord (I didn't have any), but it's the same technique. Being able to easily and conveniently adjust yourt hammock right at the ends---meaning under the tarp when it's raining---is a great thing. I've gotten to test that quite a bit lately, with all the rain and storm we've been getting where I am.

BTW, I use the Tree Huggers with this mod. Just wrap 'em around the tree, hook the ends of my hammock support web strap through the loops, and cinch it up. No problemo, Batman.

If I get around to (Ever lose your round tuit?) I'm going to mark the straps with foot markers to make centering even easier.

In any case, I'll be glad to demo the mods at the Show-and-Tell.

See y'all in November!

Yep, rings or buckles; either work great! Rings and straps I got from Strapworks.com. I use 1" poly straps because they don't stretch like nylon when wet. The strapworks stuff is kind of heavy and I'm about to order some camo 1" webbing from another outfit that is supposed to be about 1/2 the weight and is still rated to 1600lbs. I can't remember the name of the shop right now and am away from my primary computer. I'll search around hammockforums and see if I can find the thread.

Set-up and take-down is less than 1 minute and no knots or lashing to deal with except the safety slip-knot I put behind the rings.

Dang, that was you? Sorry---my fuzzy brain has it mixed up, then. I was pretty wiped out, so I'm happy just to remember that--despite my foot crapping out---I saw some beautiful things in my 2 days, and was with a group of righteous folk.

I'm much better now. What happened (short version) is I was trying a new carbon-fiber stiffenener in my right boot, and was toting too much weight---a week's worth of food. Lesson learned: never use an untested orthotic on a major hike.

Anyway, it'll be good (though mildly embarrassing) to see you again, Bluegill. And thank you very much!

Did ya all know we are going to have a FL Trail NoBo hiker at our little event? He hasn't hiked that far north yet but Someone from WB is picking him up and bring him. I may try to talk our FL Trail SoBo into letting me bring him back for the event as he will already be a week past Ocala. Well see.

Hey all -- count me in for this!

I'm thrilled to find this thread. Two days ago I was approved for a seven-month leave of absence for 2008, starting March 8th. Ya'll can guess the rest...

As I work weeknights, I won't be there Friday, but you can sign me up for everything after about mid-morning on Saturday.

After looking through the thread, I'm seeing the place is booked solid ...

Anybody willing to make room for another Hammock? If not, I'm sleeping in my jeep or something, 'cause I definitely need to get up there and sponge up some knowledge...

A couple of folks have had to cancel so there should be room somewhere. Also hammocks unlike tents are pretty easy to squeeze onto a site, unless all the trees aaaare gone.

I remember the day when the tenters would rush to get to site to get the best spot, now it is to get the best trees.:D

Right now, I am planning on being at Juniper @8am on Sat and enjoying some Hillbilly gravy from BJ. I am bringing my pics (AT with homemade frames) to display and I am looking forward to checking out hammocks, tents, used gear for sale and whatnot. I am planning on staying late that nite and enjoying the campfire. I will try to bring some wood and contribute something to the breakfast (How about orange juice?). I am a new father (DCF did an emergency placement with us, a 7 month old and a 6 year old) so I have to play it a little by ear. Love this script. I wonder what button I hit by accident. Peace and love, ya'll........JJ

Unfortunately, it's really hard for me to get out of work Friday night, and to make it Saturday morning I'd have to do it on ~5 hours of sleep. Gray....OJ sounds yummie....and the wood sounds good too.

Anyone else that can bring some wood without it being trouble, feel free. I have some old pines that the hurricane blew done in my forest. Maybe I can take the chainsaw out there and cut them up into nice size logs then chuck them into the rear of my big ass dodge truck along with everything else. Pine sounds so good when it is burning.....POP...POP....POP....sizzel...pop...:ba nana

OK Bump, I'm back in the land of the living after returning from Spain/England with a nasty cold. Darn foreigners, I said Spanish FLY, not Spanish flu! ;)

So catching up with posts, I see I'm in for steak Friday night, and biscuits and gravy Saturday AM. I'm supposed to bring something for the feast Friday. What do we still need? Do I need to bring anything for Saturday?

I don't have any wood unless I start breaking up furniture at the friend's house I'm staying with. Probably not a good idea.

I'm bringing a big duffle with spare tents, packs, gear etc. Not sure I want to sell any of it, but anyone is welcome to try stuff out, play around with it, etc. to decide if it's for them.

I'm tentatively planning to arrive sometime early Friday afternoon. Might be picking up T-Back if he calls for a ride. If so will go with whatever schedule fits his hike. If he doesn't want a ride I might backpack in on the FL trail and would need a ride back to my car before I can start the weekend. If I'm feeling lazy 'll just drive in!

Anything else?

Hey guys,

Due to technical difficulties I have been internetless for a few days. Let me bring everyone up to date. I have dropped off the trail for a couple of weeks to let my ankle recover. The same ankle I have been nursing since Key West that has caused me to take many zero days and really cut into my daily mileage has finally said "enough". I will be able to attend this weekend and need to know what to bring as far as food or supplies. I will be driving (yea) so I can help with shuttles if anyone plans on hiking and needs them. How about hammock stands. Last time I was there nothing could be tied to any tree for any reason. Has this changed? I can't wait to see everyone. This time off has been a severe blow to my ego and it will be good to be around hikers and the trail again.

. . . am I staying on? Last I heard I was on Hammock Hanger's site, since her husband couldn't make it. There was also some discussion of hanging me on BumpJumper's site. Either way, I'm bringing the cash to cover my share. It's really all the same in the long run, but I should probably be able to tell the ranger when I pull in, eh?

As it stands right now, I'm fetching rolls and butter, a grill, and me. Also my hatchet (which I never pack) ands spare tarps, etc., for Show & Tell (and maybe swapping). And my own gear and groceries, natch. I may be able to fetch a splitting maul, but don't stop looking. I'll post tomorrow if I have it. If there's anything else I should try to bring for group use, consumption, etc., let me know.

BTW, my email is temporarily in abeyance, so post to me here, shoot me a PM, or IM me, kids. I'll be checking fairly often between now and when I crash tomorrow night.

Oh, yeah . . . I'm not going to be able to fetch the monster Tupperware canoe. Sorry 'bout that, Amigi. The bloody thing's just to big (actually, I'm too puny right now  ). I might fetch my own paddles, though. Sorry, I just really dislike those plastic and aluminum noisemakers most places supply.

I think that's everything. Wish I could make it Thursday, but that's not in the cards. Oh well. . . .

Any paddlers wanting to go down as a group, we have enough that we should be able to shuttle without paying Juniper for one. Be at the entrance of the walkway from the parking lot to the springs at 930. We should all be ready to leave then.
I am coming up tomorrow afternoon with Texkittie. We are staying extra nights. Anyone else wanting to show up, have at it.
See yall then.
We ARE going to need wood. It is going to be in the low 40's.

What else is anyone doing on Sat. besides canoeing? Does anyone want to hike? I'll be bringing some OJ to the breakfast Sat morning. You all bring your cups as I don't want to be the provider of tree killing paper cups or oil rig demanding styrofoam. BJ, what is your site # or the site where we are having those hillbilly biscuits? What site will the gear be displayed at? I have a display of my own I'd like to set up for the day.

The rule is everyone has to walk in. We are not supporting LW and his minions by driving our cars.

Rumor has it that LW and Dick Cheney will be hunting in the Ocala National Forest this weekend and will be shooting anyone on the FT who is against offshore oil drilling in FL.

You boys play nice together!
I am leaving today by noon. I will be at one of three campsites. Can miss me. Big 4x4 dodge truck that sucks gas like a funnel...(my contribution to the oil fields):D
I have sites 75, 76, 78. I will be on whichever site is the biggest. I have all the tables, torches and crap for everyone to do the cooking, show and tell and fireside music events.

YES there will be hiking as well as paddling. Anyone wanting to hike can do so. This is a "do whatever the hell you feel like doing" weekend. (note to self: watch out for Gray, he may get carried away...rumor has it)
If you want to hike, set it up and do it.
Gray, thanks for the OJ. That will go well with them biscuits. I am also going to do some "dixie grits" if anyone want any.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A WEDGE TO BRING FOR SLOW???

Leaving soon so see all yall there.

The number to the campground in case anyone needs me before they get there....352-625-3147

I know firsthand why the photos are all fuzzy. I really did see some fresh bigfoot prints on the FT last summer and the way my adrenaline started pumping and the way I was looking around anxiously ready to be attacked, the last thing on my mind was getting out my camera and pointing it down to get some good pics. True story!

Well, he better keep his mitts of my pies this weekend or I'll have a mounted Bigfoot on my wall. LOL!

Last time I was there nothing could be tied to any tree for any reason. Has this changed? I can't wait to see everyone.

Just got off the phone with "Frankie" (super nice lady) at Juniper Springs Campground. I called to ask about camping hammocks and if they are allowed. She said that she has seen them in the campground before and did not know of any rules against them as long as nothing is permanently attached to the trees (nails, bolts, etc.).
<O:p
Sooooooo, hangin seems to be in order. Lookin forward to meeting ya Brian.<O:p

Has a maul been procured as yet? I finally got permission to use my step-son's maul---if I can find it. I have a fair idea where it'll be in the morning daylight, presuming I can actually find it.

Translation: if you've got one, bring it just to cheat Murphy. If I luck out, then there's double the pleasure, double the fun! :dance

See y'all in the daytime today,

I got really busy and I haven't had time to procure any firewood and I don't think I can get any tonight. I will try. See you tomorrow. You can always send me out into the forest once I get there to get firewood if still needed.

Know how ya feel. The work crew at my house came a day late and is working longer (slower) then anticipated. Thus I am home for the weekend. I must say though that the hardwoods look great. Once the painting and carpentry work are done it should be awesome. -- Hope they all stay warm, we had a freeze here in Jax last night.

It was in the low 30's here in Jax, we had to scrape ice off the car in the morning. Slightly warmer in the forest a bit south, but could still be a cold night. Nothing our hiking buddies can't handle.

Hi All.

Well that was amazing! I had the time of my little outdoor life. :banana
Starting with Thursday, I arrived at the campground to meet with Deb, Texkittie. We set up camp then headed to Walmart...(thats right), we had to by another stove and some more items that we knew we would need to feed this crew....
We got some rednecks...real redecks to deliver us a truck of split wood and we had a great fire. Next day, some of the folks started rolling in. The steak dinner was fabulous Slow...thank you so much.
The breakfast Saturday and Sunday was good as well. The paddle down the Juniper was the best I have ever had. So nice and calm.....YEAH RIGHT...Deb learned how to really paddle a kayak...:D
It was so pretty and the temps were awesome. It was cold at night but we all survived.
It was sure nice meeting all of you and I want to say now, I hope we have a Christmas party....that would be swell.

Ha! It was 28F and still dropping at 4AM Fri night/Sat morning at Juniper for the FFG. I cheated---took a thermometer and parked it outside the tarp; checked it when I made a night call :sun

Still didn't freeze, though. Just nice inside the nest.

Sorry all y'all couldn't make it. But there was plenty of steak to go around. . . .

Ook ook!

Is this open to all hikers?

I am not on here every much but am planning on hiking the FT starting January and then am going to hit the AT after.

I love hiking and if it is open to strangers I might like to meet other hiking enthusiasts:)

Thanks in advance

Bridgette, these posts were from 2007. But we are planning on having another campout/Bigfoot watch this winter. And they're working up a Fla winter hammock hang over on Hammock Forums. No firm dates yet, but everyone is welcome, always.
