Hey Gray Blazer and Cannibal, let's make this happen. If we are going to get serious about a Florida Gathering, I thought we should open a thread, and call it that, in the Gatherings forum.

So, here is the idea. Florida WhiteBlazers getting together when the weather gets cooler. So, far, Gray Blazer has suggested Gold Head Branch State Park. That would work for me. It is about 2.5 hours from me. Alexander Springs would work for me to.

How about October 12-14? I have that clear for now.

Cannibal
08-28-2007, 17:29
Works for me!

Cannibal if you can get that location mentioned in the other thread, let us know.

Cannibal
08-28-2007, 17:42
I'm going to check it out this weekend to see if it would be someplace we want to camp. The owner has not been on the property for 6 years!!!!!!!!!!! But, it is very close to the south Ocala section trailhead (Clearwater Lake). I'll know more next week.

Great. I'm about an hour from there.

What? Other WB'ers cant come?;)

Rainman-were you in Ocala the first week of July? The pics from your gallery look very much like the ONE person I saw on the Trail. I was the guy with the crazy heavy pack that didn't fit. LOL!

jnetx

It's a great idea, and either location would be good. Unfortunately I'll be in Madrid Spain that weekend.

Guess I'll have to catch you all the next time.:(

Cannibal
08-28-2007, 19:48
Trade ya! I'll go to Madrid and you can camp in Florida.:D

jnetx
08-28-2007, 20:58
Sorry, didn't mean that to sound whiney!

I've been lurking here for a while, and finally started posting just within the last week or so (I think). Imagine my excitement to see the suggestion of a get together right here in central Florida, then to have the disappointment of not being able to attend :(

Madrid will be tons of fun though. All expenses paid at a 4 star hotel, and the second week is right on the Camino Santiago so I'll be able to relive some long ago hiking memories.

Maybe we can do a Spring get together too!

Nope, wasn't me. My son and I hiked the Withlacoochee loop in March and in May we did 30+ miles in the GSMNP. That was my last hike. I have not posted any pics from those trips yet. I will get to it.

Rainman

What? Other WB'ers cant come?;)

Come on down Cuffs. We'd love to have you. It may not be the weather you're used to, living in a grocer's freezer and all. But, if you can stand the heat, you're welcome!

Gray Blazer
08-29-2007, 08:28
Let's do it! We might as well make it that weekend. On any given weekend there's gonna be someone who can't make it. My wife and I were gonna try to make it to the Shennies to see the leaves change and I'm thinking that might be the peak time, but oh well. Jnetx (Genetics?) do you have another suggestion for another weekend? You seem to be the FT expert and it would be nice to have you there to talk to or give us a slide show or something.

Rainman
08-29-2007, 10:00
I agree with Gray Blazer. The date I threw out was just a starting place. If there are some other dates people want to suggest, let's get them out there and consider them. I could do Nov 2-4, Nov 16-18, even Nov 23-25 (Thanksgiving weekend).

jnetx
08-29-2007, 10:05
Not sure about being called an expert. Doesn’t that imply some sort of liability? Actually, this past Spring I had the awkward experience of having to stand in front of the entire assemblage at the Florida Trail conference and confess that I’d forgotten to pack my sleeping bag! Just a little embarrassing for an experienced backpacker huh? In my defense, I had just purchased a new stuff sack for it, and it was blue, not my usual bright orange. I had it sitting right there on the “staging area” (aka the bed in the gear room, which other people insist on calling the guest room) and I just didn’t see it because it was blue. When I returned it was sitting right there, prominent and innocent! Fortunately there were several folks who had thought to bring extras.
Timing aside, I would love to meet everyone at a get together, and share anything I can about the Florida Trail. I love hiking it. It has been a regular weekend companion for me whenever possible for the past year or so. I have quite a few photos from the hikes, all the maps, guide books, etc., and would be happy to share. Talking is not something I have a hard time with! Actually, totally off topic, but the reason I can’t attend in mid October is I’m attending a couple of volunteer programs in Spain for chatterboxes like me. Basic principal is you get yourself to Madrid. Next morning you get picked up by bus and whisked away to a 4 star hotel for a week, all expenses paid. Once there, the volunteer duty involves talking one on one, and in small groups and conference call like settings, for about 12 hours a day! The captive audience for this constant dialog is a group of Spanish professionals who have attended formal English language training, but need to be able to speak conversational English in the course of their jobs. They pay to talk, listen and learn. I get a couple of week’s free room and board (3 square meals a day, including wine (it is Spain!)) in a beautiful Spanish resort/hotel. Sounds fun?
Ironically, having just submitted my notice at work this week because I was starting to feel it infringed on my outdoor time, my schedule is getting so full that I’m having to squeeze in weekends! So, not that I’d ever suggest rearranging dates for my convenience, but if the weekend of Sept 22/23, or November 10/11 was more convenient for the remainder of the group I could make it. If not, I’ll try to catch you all next time.

jnetx
08-29-2007, 10:15
I guess rainman posted while I was typing, and wouldn't you just know it, we appear to be on opposite schedules!

I could probably do Nov 17/18 and maybe even Thanksgiving weekend if that suits everyone else's schedules better. I was hoping to get a two week kayak trip in when I returned from Europe and it's tentatively set for mid November. However, I probably have some influence on the dates if we arrange something during that time.

FYI - The Florida Trail Central FL chapter is hosting a Thanksgiving weekend camping somewhere in the vicinity of Orlando. (need to check where and the Newsletter is on my other laptop). Wednesday night through Sunday I think, though most folks will just do a day or two. Pot luck for Thanksgiving dinner. If there is one thing FTA does well, it's eat!

Cannibal
08-29-2007, 10:19
Just about any weekend is fine with me outside of September. Plus, most of the bugs will be fading away by then, not gone just fading.

Rainman
08-29-2007, 10:54
I'm a member of the FTA Central Florida Chapter, though not all that active. I have always meant to go to the Thanksgiving campout. Maybe we could combine the two events. Is anyone interested in that?

Gray Blazer
08-29-2007, 11:31
I like Nov 17/18. Anyone else?

jnetx
08-29-2007, 12:08
The FT Thanksgiving campout is Nov 21- 25 at Moss Park with covered dish dinner Thursday and hikes each day. Moss Park is alcohol free. That might have some influence on whether to tag onto that location.

As I stated in an earlier post, Nov 16 – 18 could work for me if it suits others.

Cannibal
08-29-2007, 13:12
I'd never hear the end of it, missing Thanksgiving Dinner then leaving to go romp thru the woods for 6 months.

November 16 - 18 would work, just can't miss Turkey Day with the family...I'll be needing someone for my maildrops! :)

Gray Blazer

How 'bout we give it another week before we decide and give everybody a chance to give some feedback. So far, including Cuffs (are you formerly Al hiking Gal?) there's only 4 of us responding. Bumpjumper might be interested, but I'm not sure. Haven't heard from her. She might be thinking I'm a pervert from some of my other posts and that could have scared her off (not a pervert, just a moron). Ask Dixie, I'm harmless. The last FL gathering, there were only 3 of us, 4 if you count Ed (sorry, Friedan).

Perhaps the last FL. get together was so poorly attended because it was in August:eek:

Rainman
08-29-2007, 21:23
Why don't we say it is set for Nov 16-18 and then let people respond with availability, location TBD. How does that sound?

jnetx
08-29-2007, 21:35
I'll 90% commit to Nov 16-18 (other 10% being if the kayak trip has already be scheduled for same time) if someone can find a location.

Scrollner
09-01-2007, 01:10
The 16-18 may be doable for me - I have to check the kids ball schedules, it may be a possible conflict. However, if it is a Goldhead Branch, I might be able to do both

I am in for this meetup. I know of about 4 other members that will too.
Tell me what yall are looking to do and I can tell ya what place is best to accommodate you.
I dont mean to sound like I am taking over....not my intent. Just want to make this happen for yall and US....:banana

09-02-2007, 12:22
I see you found it BumpJumper!

So caome all, what are we interested in doing? Campground with car access and just hanging round for the weekend, or hike into somewhere and camp over? A short/longer hike (either into/out of camp, or from a car camping base), or kaying? Anything else (other than eating, of course)?

Let's get some ideas out there. Personally, I'd rather hike than kayak at that time of year, I've been yakking all summer while looking forward to more reasonable hiking temps. I'm all for a weekend backpack, but realize that may limit it for those that have limited time and just want to drop in for the day/evening/or overnight.

So I'd vote for car camping somewhere in ONF or Goldhead. Think we'll have enough folks for a group site somewhere, or just plan to get a couple of sites at at campground? Another alternative would be somewhere like Hopkins Prairie. Not sure what the campsite availibility is like at that time of year, but we could park at the trailhead and just walk into the woods a 1/4 mile or so and camp (open camping in that area assuming hunting hasn't started, I'll check the dates).

jnetx

Darn! General Gun season starts Nov 10th for Ocala area, so we will need to be in a campground or on private land, no backwoods camping!

I would like to camp/hike/kayak if possible.
If we all decide to camp at ... lets say..Alexander Springs... If some of us want to kayak.canoe, we can...we can hike as well.
I am with you J... lets go in with cars and camp/hike from there.
That weekend is EXCELLENT for me. I am booked all other weekends...:sun

As a former resident and employee at Camp Ocala (whatever that is now) and someone who grew up swamp-tromping on South Merritt Island, I have only one question:

Can out-of-staters attend?

Hammock Hanger
09-02-2007, 15:40
I would love to see something here in my great state of FLORIDA!! Currently November is pretty open for me other then T-day week.
I live right up the road from Goldhead and only an hour and a half from Ocala. I'm more for kayaking right now as I hiked all summer but even if we do separate things in the day it would be nice to meet and share a campfire.

I'm in Tallahassee and I'd love to attend, but the only weekends I have open are: Oct. 20-21, Nov. 3-4, Nov. 10-11, and Dec. 1-2. Add those to the responses. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Those who want to kayak can and those who want to hike can. Jed has never done the Juniper Run and would like to.

BumpJumper
09-02-2007, 19:22
Juniper is an excellent run. It is definately no a beginner run.
It has very nice campsites and facililities. You can also rent canoes there for anyone that wants to give it a try. Plus....I am told there is hiking out of there.
HH... do you know of a hike route for that area that we could all take?

jnetx
09-02-2007, 20:46
For a short hike the the Yearling Trail is only a couple miles drive from Juniper (on the way to the canoe run takeout) http://www.floridahikes.com/index.php?module=article&view=62 There are 3.5 or 5.5 mile loops

Or for a longer hike, Hidden pond is about 6.5 miles out on the FL Trail, take a swim and hike the 6.5 back.

For a really short hike there is the nature boardwalk at Juniper, about a 1 mile each way (or at the tent campground if that's where we would stay)

I wouldn't say Juniper is not a beginners run. Every time I have run it there have been many absolute novices and even some of the totally clueless on it! We even saw one couple in a rented canoe going back upstream becuase there was a tree they said they could not get over! We offered them to accompany us and we would help them over, but they preferred to go back. We saw them later at the campground. They made it, but there are a couple of tight corners up the top there that I'm sure glad I wasn't the one to meet up with them at!

Sounds good. I'm a yeah if this suits the majority.

FYI - tent campsites at Juniper are $18 per night, minimum 2 nights on weekends, plus reservation fee of $9. Max 5 adults & 2 cars per space (but there is plenty of extra parking in the day use and overflow areas. They probably have a limitation on how many tents per site too - it doesn't specifically say on their website, but it's usually 2 tents per site. If so, that would be $22.50 each for the weekend if we can get together and double up on campsites.

There are two camping areas, Fern Hammock is quieter because its tents only, no RVs. Sandpine is the other.

Juniper run was a blast in the 70s. The stream was full of gar with nice, sharp teeth and you could sunbathe skyclad and let the current get you there with one lookout. Unfortunately if you decided to have a swim there was always a ranger behind a tree to tell you the area was off-limits or to put your clothes back on.

Ah my well-spent youth...

Trees over 6 inches in diameter..... 12-16 feet apart works for most... Thanks for checking.

No problem BumpJumper. This is exactly the group participation I hoped would happen. It's a pure democracy as far as I'm concerned. Come one, come all at the best time available. That seems to be Nov 16-18.

Juniper Springs sounds great. I have heard great things about it and have never been there. I have no agenda for the location. I would just like to see as many as possible, including any neighbors from the north, even Maryland.

So, I'm a yeah for Juniper on Nov 16-18. On the question of activities, I should think it could be as diverse as people's preferences. Some activities could be the whole group, like mealtimes, and some could be subgroups, like hiking, kayaking, or hanging out.

I hope this helps. I am glad this is shaping up to be a pretty good sized group.

Cannibal and GrayBlazer, I haven't seen you guys post in a while. What do you think about BumpJumper's developing plan?

jnetx
09-03-2007, 12:56
peter pan -no problem.

bump - I'm planning to hike the FT from Clearwater through to Juniper one weekend this month. Figured I'd park at Clearwater Friday evening, hike in a couple miles for overnight, then probably stop for a swim at Alexander and on to Buck Lake, Farles, or thereabouts for Sat night, then in to Juniper Sunday. Was waiting for input from a friend to see which weekend would be best to help me shuttle the car, or pick me up at Juniper, but if you're up to a weekend hike, have a car we can leave at one end, and want to join me, I'd welcome the company, and can adjust to a weekend that suits your plans too.

The plan is excellent. Anyone wanting to do anything at anytime is great...
My friends and I will bring our kayaks and maybe a few extra if no one else has any and wants to give it a shot.
I see that only five to a campsite...I am only wondering about how many tents allowed. I think it is only two. We must call to see.

I'm in for Nov 17th 18th.

I didn't think that Juniper run was all that difficult and would be a great beginner run. There use to be the biggest gator named Herman but he was destroyed I'm sure after the incident a few years ago.

There is the FL Trail running right through the campground and forest surrounding it. Lots of little side trails but I don't have a trail map with me right now.

I am turning my husband onto hammock camping so this will be a great place for him to hang his first night. (Basically I said I will no longer share a tent with you, you must hammock!!!)

I tried to call to get an answer to the dog ? (already answered) and how many tents/hammocks per site, but got no answer. I'm headed out for the remainder of the day so here's the number for Juniper if anyone else wants to try: (352) 625-0546 (callto:+13526250546)

Campsites are reserved through Reserve America ( http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?agency=NRRS&parkId=4036 ) though it might be nice if we have a consensus on whether to go for the tent only camping area or mixed in with RVs first before reservations are made. Might also be an idea to match up anyone who only wants to stay Sat night (if there are any) with those that want both, as the campsite must be occupied the first night to retain the reservation. I'd be happy to make one in either tent or RV site for both nights (seeing as 2 are required anyway) and could share site with either a one or two nighter - would even consider sharing with a hanger (if I have to!)

Sue/Hammock Hanger

HH/Sue,

JRB has a hammock tent coming out id about 60 days that takes care of the hammocker and one or more on the ground as well.....

consensus on whether to go for the tent only camping area
I particularly do not want to hear generators running.
I am in for tents only.

Might also be an idea to match up anyone who only wants to stay Sat night (if there are any) with those that want both, as the campsite must be occupied the first night to retain the reservation
A campsite can only be reserved for BOTH nights on the weekends....so, whoever gets a site, has to pay for both nights and leave it to them to find someone else to share it with if they wish and split the cost. That would be too hard for us to keep track of. Dont you agree?

No matter what nights everyone comes in...we need to agree on the sites so we can all reserved them. I think it would be cool to get sites next to or across from each other...
If someone reserves a site for the weekend, and cannot show up until Sat....I can throw a tent on your site to show it occupied.

OK guys and gals, I checked the tent only camping (Fern Hammock) and there were only 4 spaces left, so if we are going to do this we are going to have to commit and act fast to book those remaining sites.

I booked site #77, and site 75, 76, and 78 are the only ones still available (lets hope Mr 79 doesn't have any objections to a bunch of stinky hiker trash!). The RV camping area (Sandpine) has 5 or 6 sites kind of together also, if anyone prefers that. Anyone who is sure they want to attend might want to grab the other Fern Hammock sites at least. Surely we can scare up at least enough folks to fill 4 sites, (assuming 2 tents per site thats a whole 7 other people) but if not I'll cancel mine and swallow the $7 (or whatever it is) cancellation fee.

"whoever gets a site, has to pay for both nights and leave it to them to find someone else to share it with if they wish and split the cost. That would be too hard for us to keep track of. Dont you agree?"

Agreed, whoever books the site and wants a site mate will have to agree with them on what they are going to pay if they only want to stay Saturday night.

Half of my site #77 is up for grabs. The bidding starts at 1/2 the cost for the whole weekend, or 1/3 of the cost and a 12 pack for one night!:banana

Shazam!

This thing really took off. I go hiking in Ocala National Forest for the long weekend and come back to all this discussion about a get together; WOW!

I didn't read ALL the posts (A.D.D.), but did the date settle on Nov 17th weekend? That works for me. BTW the Ocala section is in good shape and I happily report that I watched two black bears play-fight about 100 yards from where I was hanging. Made me a wee bit nervous, but I don't think they even knew I was there. The locals call it the "Hot dog stand" (no idea why) and it is about 5 or 6 miles north from Clearwater Lake. I saw somebody was going to put in a few miles starting from Clearwater Lake and this is a great site. Really easy to find; when you walk across the first water source from Clearwater Lake, turn around and walk back about 50 yards and look east. Perfect for tents (if you must) or hammocks. Maybe a mile or two north of the powerline. All in all that section is in pretty good shape and will make for some great day hikes for those who don't paddle.

Really glad this is starting to shape-up; looking forward to meeting ya'll!

Well, at the last FL Gathering, we had way too many beers, walked through the woods in the dark, into the middle of the road, and watched the countless stars in the sky, while avoiding cars. It was very relaxing and spiritual. :D

I learned the hard way that my tent does not ventilate well in the heat and rain, and Amigi learned to seam seal his tent before leaving the house (poor guy bailed, and bailed, and....) My new stove wouldn't work, and Ed and I almost became alligator bait, as quite a few tried to follow the canoe and cut us off. It was one of the best times of my life.

If we can get away, we'll try to make it this year.

That's one of the best things about FL. I used to go to a lot of free ones. Now most of them are privately owned and locked up or they charge you to get in or some are even for scuba divers only (Blue springs on the Withlacoochee near GA was one of the best free ones. Wekiva near Bronson was about the best.)

Go tube the tuck. Ichetucknee Springs flows into the Santa Fe near Fort White and is several miles long. You can rent tubes and shuttle back and forth to your car. I like to bring my fins and goggles and tie the tube to my leg and just swim down the river. It's like a narrower, longer, swifter version of the Rainbow or Silver River.

How do you open the sticky?

Rainman
09-12-2007, 11:12
Yes. The plan for the Florida Gathering is to meet at Juniper Springs Campground on the weekend of November 16-18.

Camping is available. Many of us will be camping on Friday and Saturday night. All are welcome.

If you cannot camp, come for the day on Saturday and hang out (that is not necessarily a hammock reference).

Juniper Springs Campground is one of the campgrounds within the Ocala National Forest, so it is operated by the U.S. Forest Service. It is listed on the official website here: http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/southern/ocalcmp.htm.

You can click on the link on the official site to make reservations. Other posts report that the sites are all reserved, but that changes periodically as people cancel. Check the reservations site often or follow up with one of the people who posted that they have reserved sites that are available directly from them.

There will be lots of activities for all. Some people are bringing kayaks or canoes. Some people will be hiking. Some people will probably be hanging out at the springs. There is no official "program" because we want to be open and accommodate all people and interests.

Many have expressed a desire to have a gear discussion, so please bring your hiking gear even though we are car camping. Sometime on Saturday we will congregate at the campsites and have a gear "show" for those who want to do that.

That is pretty much it. Gray Blazer suggested a new thread that identifies the date and place in the name of the thread. I can do that if people think it is needed. I just don't want to confuse the planning and discussion with two threads doing the same thing if we do not need it. Let me know what you guys think.

Just give it a shake. If the bubbles disappear quickly, then it's fine. There will be zero 'burn' on the way down, but a nice warm glow from your belly.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Hey people
I just saw this. I'm a little slow. My wife trailname Lulu and I live in Palm coast, we would love to come. I see all the tent sites are taken. I'll keep checking on it. Does anyone have a spot for another tent in their site?? We are going in 3 weeks to do a section from Dicks creek gap to Wayah Gap. So the November thing is perfect. If we can't find a spot we will be there on saturday for sure We may just set up in the woods somewhere.

Hey guys, I sure do not want to poop the party, but I do not want to have my Son exposed to either of these items. If I need to stay away, so be it. However, I would like to come, so can we make it a family event?

On a related point, I am a practicing attorney and have been nominated three times to the governor for appointment to a judge position. I am currently under consideration for appointment to a vacant Orange County Judge slot. It is not in my best interest either to be involved in an event that includes illegal activity.

Just food for thought. Thanks for your consideration.

I have a chance to go to work for vortex springs as they have new owners and they dont have any instructors there and I was down in july to help them with some problems they had down there and was offered a Job down there but until they get there legal problems worked out I wont go to work there it was a very hostel take over and the prevouis owners are giving them a fit which I dont understand cause the orgirnal owners were great.

Are there any openings left? I would love to attend, just saw the thread tonight though.

Hell ya, the more the merrier. According to bumpjumper there are still sites that can be shared.

Thanks. I supposed to go to Cumberland Island Nov. 9-11. Maybe I'll hike in Ocala NF the week after.

No problem, hope you make it. Ocala is my favorite section of the FT so far. Lots of wildlife, no water problems, and very well marked. Of course, I haven't done the Suwannee section yet; I hear it's even better.

Ok, My site is full.
Hamhock and I are occupying that site.

J has a site

Rainman, who is sharing with you? Did you loose my address???

J is across the pond right now and I don't want to speak on her behalf, but I'm sharing the site with J. However, since I'm a hammock guy, there should be plenty of room left on the cold hard ground for another tent.

Did I hear my name?

Cannibal is welcome to speak on my behalf in my absence, but maybe a phone call to Juniper to check if a hammock counts as a tent would be in order, because I'm not giving up my campsite to become a bear pinata!

LOL - technically, I never actually said it was in the mail, only that I would send it. Scout Wood Badge Training and efforts to get a judge appointment have kept me pretty busy. I just kept forgetting. Sorry.

RAIN....I got the check!!!!

Slow, hopefully, it will be dry that weekend. Friday is good for steaks. I will need to see how many are actually coming in Friday night. I know some are not coming until Saturday.
Their loss!!!!!!!!!!!!!heheehehe
Lets see....
I propose that each camper that is coming up Friday, bring a dish of some sort. Any food is considered a DISH....That way we can have a pot luck steak dinner Friday night.
Ummmmm, corn on the cob would be good....

Anyone up for "Music in the Camp" Friday and Saturday night? Lets all bring our "instruments" to pic on....
I have a nice set of spoons to play....:D
Banjos, guitars, washboard, harmonica, mandolin, you name....just bring it...
PLEASE...
Post if you are coming up Friday night for the FREE steak pot luck dinner and WHAT you are bringing!

I'll be there Friday, but I have no idea what I'll bring. Bread, cake, pie; it will probably be something baked. Wonder why my don't pants fit anymore?

If yall are hanging, are you counted as a tent? I didnt think so, that is why I told hamhock he could roost on the site.

Troops,

I've been trying all evening to find a way to reserve a site online, but no-go. Anyone had any luck? Can phone reservations be made, or do I need to drive out to the Springs. I've got my eye on site 73, for no particular reason other than it being in the FFG area.

Ayuda me, por favor!

I'm also cross-posting this on HikingHQ---forgive me.

Best,
Mal

Mal,
I just checked and the only way to get a site at this point (unless sharing one with one of us), is to be there early Friday am to get it...
