I, for one, would welcome the change!! As the guy who is responsible for running the composting privies at Eagle's Nest and William Penn Shelters, I would love it if the NPS would claim "federal supremacy" on the issue of backcountry sanitation and require all users to pack out their poop. Right now, in Pa., we are saddled with state regulations that require an approved sanitary facility for every campground (ie - shelter) that we build. (Approved = does not allow untreated waste to come into contact with the ground.) Building them isn't a problem - getting folks to volunteer to operate them on a weekly basis, however, is next to impossible.

LONG LIVE THE WAG-BAG!!:banana

If Mt. Whitney is the highest location WITH a privy, then base camp on Everest must be the highest place WITHOUT a privy. I am in no condition physically or financially to attempt Everest, but if the descriptions of the waste problems on Everest are accurate it would put a severe damper on my appreciation of the experience.

I think "pack it out" is the only solution if there are no facilities and you can't bury it.

I was so sad when I got to the summit this summer and learned there wasn't a privy up there anymore. It's a classic photo op.

I actually approached from the west side and no one told me about the wag bag situation since most users summit from the east. I had to hold it down 6000 vertical feet and 10 miles or so.

I think it's a great rule though. For those who have never been there, it's a narrow canyon mostly of rock with an average of 6 inches of soil. It's usually frozen a few inches down anyways. Now imagine hundreds of people going up that a day and you have....well....a crap ton.

WORLD'S HIGHEST PRIVY?? Nope, only the Lower 48's.
Used it in '06, right after some Bean & Rabid (see Lion King'g PCT DVD) got engaged beside it.
Also, why is this in the Articles Section??

You can buy those bags at WallyWorld with the portable toilets. They're about $7 perhalf dozen, they turn liquid into a gel and solid into an more inert solid. I have some because we camp at certain festivals and my 8 year old step daughter refuses to use a porta pot. So we bring our own.

Was there in june and it was gone already...big mistake! Saw fresh s**t everywhere on the climb. Yes you are out in the open on the climb but distances are so vast that no one would be able to see you in detail anyway. Oh well, something for the marmots to eat!lol
