Dont get your hopes up. Im not posting that this is on. I just want to start my planning (I have to get it on my calendar long before it happens so I take the time off!)

Any one? Any one? Sly? Helloo? Any one?

I believe I recall Sly's PROMISE to return. The SO RUCK is held on Martin Luther King weekend in January. No one's about to talk about its not happening. Make your plans accordingly.--Kinnickinic

Well, it still would be a good idea to assure that NOC or similar facility will be available to us. Organizing the SORUCK is easy, only if you don't organize it. Hoepfully, SLY will return and help it get put together.

StarLyte

Several things my friends....

organizing a Ruck is not easy.

One does not simply make a phone call to reserve the facility.

One has to PUT UP A LOT OF CASH TO RESERVE the facility and then assume that people will respond and pay accordingly. (The PA Ruck has a different reservation system).

I am noticing that folks are anxious to attend, but not everyone participates responsibly. I am speaking of:

bringing your share of food for the ENTIRE WEEKEND. I'm not talking about bringing a box of donuts and then expect to eat free all weekend. Not sure what some folks are thinking.

I'm also speaking about people pitching in to wash dishes and clean up. This doesn't happen on it's own.

I always see the same people spending a LOT OF MONEY for food, cooking it, and then also cleaning up afterwards because other's are freeloading.

I would love to see this....

everyone bringing food for the ENTIRE weekend
everyone helping
everyone having a good time

BTW Dawg resigned from her kitchen status last year.

Just a thoughtful reminder that these things just don't happen and the money and efforts just don't drop out of the sky.

Love to all, even you freeloaders :D

Here is a non-freeloader that would like to attend. I just gotta deconflict my schedule for the time period. If I do make it, sign me up for KP if that is what is required.

Cuffs
09-07-2007, 13:31
I would certainly offer to help cook. HOWEVER! I can barely cook for myself! I would not subject anyones intestines to my concoctions! If I can help out someother way, please let me know!

LOL... Everything is under control folks, relax. SoRuck will be over MLK weekend. We can't actually book the NOC until late October, but I always make sure to call ASAP.

So far, I have Lion King sending his "Walking West with Freedom" DVD and I think Jim and Ginny will be doing something on the Great Divide Trail. I'll be talking to Pam Underhill at the Gathering to see if we can get someone from the NPS to do an AT talk. I'd also like to have a recent AT hike slideshow/DVD. Open to suggestions...

Cuffs, I'll PM you later (at a McD's wifif spot in CO heading east).

wasn't there a list last yr that folks signed up and listed what they would bring food wise or sign up for clean-up?

Yeah I'm working on the interactive spreadsheet. Last year I used a trial edition from the net. Now it would cost $250 per month to keep it current. Google has something that could work.

If Dawg is actually retired, I'm thinking Pot Luck on Fri, hopefully OB will continue Sat Breakfast, soup, sandwiches, chilli for lunch, Pasta dinner Sat. and that Miss Janet and Tinman will do Sun Breakfast as usual. I'll keep you informed.

I am going to ask a question, and I take full credit for sounding dumb or whatever, but, i can admit to it! :)

what exactly is this SORUCK? from what i can tell, it sounds like a gathering of hikers, which sounds like a good time to me!

IT is. I haven't been able to make one yet (dang war and all) but it is a good one right before the start of the thru-hike season and it is on the AT within 100 or so miles from the souther termini. Newbies and old timers get together and talk, hang out, and do some hiking together.

Actually, the SORUCK has been a fairly straight forward thing to organize, with much food going to waste each Sunday. It would be nice to have more of an organized chore list to help with cleaning and stuff, but it seems that the biggest worry is the preparation and the fear that: 1) no one will show up; 2) no one will bring food; 3) everyone will come with too much food.

I anticipate that NOC will become a small venue for us and we will move to Fontana or some such spot in a few years. The first several SORUCKs were in very small venues - Goose Creek Campground, Randoulf Scott Park, and Amicalola Falls Park. Each year we/I experienced similar concerns about whether someone was going to make a profit/go broke/starve/etc.

This has and will work out, or it will have become time for the SORUCK to fold it's tent. Children do come to the SORUCK, as I bring at least 2 each trip in the recent past. I expect to provide pancakes, but didn't get to obtain Blueberry Patch blueberries this year. Frozen Costco blueberries are the likely result.

Oh, the basic idea of the SORUCK was a gathering of hikers and their friends - hopefully to help newbies prepare for their thru hike or other entry to our sport. It was conceived to help folks away from Pennsylvania to get some of the RUCK experience and to take some of the pressure from them. We have different weekends to allow those without lives to attend both.

OB -
The original idea for the Rucks was that they would be small gatherings so the newbies would actually get to talk to former thruhikers and get the benefit of their experience and enthusiasm. A big function eliminates the personal touch - and it tends to become a reunion for former thruhikers rather than an inclusion of the newbies. That's why we tried so hard for so long to get someone - ANYONE - to start a SoRuck - and a Rockies Ruck - and any other Ruck we could bludgeon someone into organizing.

BTW - thank you for stepping up and taking the challenge and organizing the first few SoRucks. Not sure I ever thanked you for that. Mea Culpa.

I wonder if you remember this - it was once and is again part of my life philosophy -

How do you follow the Way

<O:p
Go where you are sent<O:p</O:p
Wait till you are shown what to do.<O:p</O:p
Do it with the whole self.<O:p</O:p
Remain till you have done what you were sent to do. <O:p</O:p
Walk away with empty hands.

I reached the final line of that mantra with respect to the Rucks several years ago. Now I find it interesting how the philosophy and direction have changed. Luckily for me there's no desire on my part to fix that.

We may or may not be at the SoRuck in Jan. It depends on time and money and what we plan for next year. Could be back to the GDT - or Alaska - or the Southwest - or northern BC - or all of the above. But we WILL be at the Gathering.

Sly, pm me and let me know what I can do to help.

Also, I'm bringing my pack if there is still going to be Tuckerizing involved. Watching last time was fun and I'm brave enough to throw my pack into the ring this time.

I'm not sure who you are, but thanks. I have hoped for smaller state RUCKs, myself, but find you can get the small RUCK at NOC by dealing with others in your cabin. Mealtimes are huge social events, and the organized hikes can be pretty intimate as the bus heads up the hill.

But I think that the original RUCK idea has gone somewhat big time, altho' I haven't seen one to top 200 folks, yet. I wonder how well we do with getting the newbies alerted of this resource.

Besides the Gathering, I feel the Rucks are most informative and you get a one on one with previous years' thru-hikers.

I email some newbies on their TJs (or here) and inform them of the Rucks (the PA Ruck in particular because of the 2 hour thru-hiker bull session....and I won't mention PA here again folks).

After their thru-hike I invite them again to ask them to participate in the thru-hiker bull session.

Most thru-hikers are delighted to share their experience and opinions with other newbies. (Hey I should be getting paid for this :D )

However, none of this replaces any experience out there.

Some newbies are curious about the tuckerization which is cool because we are RUTHLESS and love it ;)

I'm with ya StarLyte, and the Tuckerization was an excellent feature of the weekend - I really enjoyed it and learned things I had never thought of! You just can't get that type of help in any outfitter - that is of course unless White Blaze were to open an outfitter somewhere :)

That's the hard way to do it. I prefer to learn from other people's mistakes - it's a lot easier - and for most people, makes it a lot more lilely that thay'll actually finish the trail.

It is my karma coming back to me. When I was in OIF 1 looking at guys filling sandbags and though to myself: I'm glad I am past that point in my career.

One year later I helped build a FOB in Mississippi for training. I probably laid twice as many sandbags as anyone did in my unit in OIF1.

I also remember in OIF1 looking at the top gunners in the summer thinking: that has to be the hottest, most dangerous, and all around suckiest position to be in.

Two years later I am back in Iraq as a top gunner with even more stuff on in even worse conditions.

Now I am going to be on KP. I imagine this is to attone for all the KP I put people on.

Watch your Karma ya'll.

This is no where near the organized scholarly event of the Gathering.

Work with me, I'm dealin' here. Good Credit! Bad Credit! No Credit! We got a deal for you...

That's what I'm sayin'... The budget-minded kid planning an '08 AT attempt could fill his/her shopping cart with "well-tested" gear!

Just wanted to pass on some FYI...

While here at NOC for GAF, I booked my SoRuck bunk... they are filling up fast! At least 2 bunkhouses are entirely full as of today!!

They have a generous cancellations policy (in case Ruck is move or gets an alternate date), so you may want to go ahead and give them a call now!

Hopefully, that will be Sly's reservation for the group.

What say you, Sly?

Yes, pray tell!

I am planning to attend and will bring a ham and my services for kitchen duty.
Hi Bluegill, hope to see you there, and in the kitchen as well. :)

I know Sly's been on the phone with NOC, I re-confirmed my reservation before I left NOC/GAF this morning and they knew exactly what dates and what event!

Here is a non-freeloader that would like to attend. I just gotta deconflict my schedule for the time period. If I do make it, sign me up for KP if that is what is required.I'm planning on making it as well this year and hoping to bring my hiking partner, Doc, with me. If the First Sergeant is pulling KP, sign me up as well. If it's not too good for the "first shirt" then it's not too good for CPL Hooch! Hope to see y'all there.

Slyman:

I will not be able to make it for lunch on Saturday, as I have an important meeting I need to attend from 10-1 in Crossville, Tennessee. I'll be there for the evening program on Fires Creek. Next time you go into the food spreadsheet, could you please remove the cheese that I was going to bring for lunch.

Looking forward to seeing folks.

Thanks.

How about a few boxes of Florida sunshine in the form of fresh-picked, red, grapefruit? The trees are loaded with them this year and I don't know what else I could bring from here to up there. I have decided to go this time.
