$5-6K, although ours was more towards the 5 end. i really dont know exactly how much we spent but this is my best guess...it could have been $4500 for all I know.

Along with posting what you actually spent, I think it might be helpful to post what you think you could save saved had you cut some corners.

we did "cut corners" compared to most.
we had free rides to/from both ends of the trailhead. we also had the majority of our gear beforehand. we did not stay in a lodging all too often (on average once every 10 days). we did splurge on food in town (but not drinks).

When I eventually attempt the AT (upon retirement), I won't be cutting any corners. But, I've had a entire working-life to get into this position.
For college kids/young couples, it would be totally different. I would think they might know what the bare min is, and adjust off of that.

Do I have to include our mortgage payment? :)
It's hard to say. To limit it to just hiking, it took us about 6k to go from Springer to Katahdyn. But there were other expenses, like our mortgage.
