I can tentatively in for September 20th I think. I also think each of you know that my wife might volunteer me for some other crap by then. I am going to start a calendar here at my house so she can stop doing that to me.
A wife and a steady job has ruined many a good hike!
That would make a great bumper sticker slogan!
Most of us are in that same boat.;)

Maybe.
My wife is in the process of scheduling another hip replacement the beginning of September.
I might be able to make the trip if she's still too sore to catch me.

Getting some good reponses to this outing!
I have in mind extending the loop into a blue blaze extravaganda! I plan on starting and finishing at the Byron Reece Trailhead. This will incorporate the Byron Reece approach trail, the Freeman Trail, the AT, Duncan Ridge trail, the Coosa Backcountry trail, and the Bear Hair Gap trail. Put all these together and that makes a good sized loop! I haven't got the mileage figured yet... I'm guessing about 20 in all.Should be doable in a weekend.
Camp will be somewhere between Wildcat Gap and Calf Stomp Gap. I'll be taking the clockwise route.
Would like to get started on the Friday before and camp on Blood Mountain the first night if this works out.
Any thoughts on this?

Nice, sounds like fun. I would certainly be in for this deal. Let's get a FIRM date on this so I can certain I am off work at least by lunch that Friday, if not earlier.

I'm putting in for this Friday off. I shouldn't have an issue with getting this weekend off unless our other on call technical guy is off.
So let me get this straight here maybe if I can. We can meet at the Byron Reece Lot, maybe shuttle a truck down to Vogel. Then hike from the Byron Reece to Blood, camp on Blood. Then down to Slaughter Gap to pick up the Duncan Ridge. Then we will take the Duncan Ridge over to Coosa Bald. Then jump on the Coosa BT there (I know the two trails run concurrent much longer than this). Maybe camp at Calf Stomp Saturday night. Then on into Vogel Sunday morning. Then if we are able to stage a truck at Vogel, everyone rides back to the Reece Parking area. I am going to try to get a mileage estimate tonight if I can. I will post my best guess here later tonight or tomorrow. Sounds like an awesome plan to change up the hike a little

OK best I can tell I have it at around 17 to 18 miles. I used DWM's Duncan Ridge Guide, the Coosa BT Guide from Vogel, and the AT Guide to arrive at this mileage. Here is a rough estimate of what I have.
Reece Lot to Blood Summit 2.4
Blood Summit to DRT Term 1.1
DRT Term to Wolf Pen Gap 2.3
Wolf Pen Gap to Coosa Bald 2.9
Coosa Bald to Calf Stomp Gap 2.0
Calf Stomp Gap to Vogel State Park 6.1
17 total. I said 18 since I am probably off somewhere. Sounds like a nice 2.5 day hike. I would say try to make it into Slaughter Gap sites Friday. But sunset on Blood would be nice if I can hammock up there. Then make it to somewhere just beyond Calf Stomp Saturday. Then make it on into Vogel shortly after lunch Sunday.
If anyone is driving up from southern florida for this trip and I could catch a ride I would be very interested in going.

I walked the Bryon Reese Trail to Blood Shelter, on over the mountain and back on the Freeman trail this past Sunday. Met the Trail Runner, but I forgot her name. Nothing negative about this part of the hike, other than the Bear Warnings.
I may still get in on this, we haven't heard a confirmation about our house closing for Thursday... thats not a good sign.

nice to help you to have a wonderful wow life.I see where you went wrong. Right after crossing GA-180 the Coosa used to climb Wildcat Mtn on its southern slope. But a relocation now takes the trail around to the north side and doesn't climb to the summit anymore. It is confusing the first time you encounter the relo.
(Dammit Two Speed, I told you to quit playing those games at work. Now your geek friends have followed you over here.)
"What's This Crap?!?!?!"
I saw something similar on another post this morning.
