Skidsteer and I will be hiking the Coosa Backcountry Trail this weekend, and we're putting out a general call for anyone who can make the trip. The CBT is a loop trail and a little over 13 miles, and is rated as "strenuous" by Tim Homan in "The Hiking Trails of North Georgia. We will be meeting at the visitor center at Vogel State Park. PM Skidsteer or me for details.

'SloggerWell, you can console yourself with the thought that the weather's gonna suck:
Sep 15 Saturday
Clouds giving way to sun . Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 50s.
Sep 16 Sunday
Sunshine. Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 50s.

When we hiked it there was water about three and six miles into the thirteenish mile loop(hiked counterclockwise). No other water until the Coosa rejoins the Bear Hair about 1 1/2 to 2 miles from Vogel. I doubt much has changed in the last month.

Yes, from about a mile away at most, but you can camp away from the roads.

I'd say about half of the loop is far enough from the road that traffic noise isn't perceptible. Nearer the highway? Yup, and GA 180 is popular with the motorcyclists, too.

Is the trail heavily used? I would guess not based on the previous comment about it being overgrown. I may be doing the trail next weekend.

The Coosa is extremely well blazed and not overgrown. There is good flowing water at several points along the trail from the recent rains. I passed ~15 people on the trail Dec 30. There is an excellent campsite ~.2mi North of the Coosa/DRT intersection on the Duncan Ridge Trail near the Coosa Bald.
Enjoy

Thanks. A buddy of mine is going to be coming up this weekend, and wants to do a hike. The Coosa is the perfect length and obviously a loop - my concern is the accessibility to day hikers and the fact that it crosses GA 180 twice. However, last year we did a hike around the Chatooga river, and he complained that there were too many day hikers, and even people with their kids on the trail - he has requested something more remote and less traveled. I thought about an in-and-out on the BMT from Three Forks, but from what I understand you get some day hikers and car campers around the Toccoa. I've also though about a BMT-AT loop from Springer, but this is the most heavily travelled stretch of the AT. Maybe the BMT section through the Cohuttas? I know I'm obsessing, but I don't get to hike much, and I want to get the most bang for the limited time I have. Any advice would be welcome.

Is there something wrong with kids on the trail? My seven year old and/or five year old accompany me on all my day hikes with lengths approaching 8 to 9 miles. Both are fairly well behaved and might even talk to you if I gave them permission. So I want to know if I am offending people by taking my children with me on hikes, trying to pass my love of the outdoors that our God has given us to my children?

IMO, nothing wrong with kids on the trail per se. However, there is a distinction between kids who belong on the trail, and kids that don't, meaning kids who are loud, disruptive, and leave a trail of litter and cheese doodles and doritos.

Kids are load and disruptive, that is what they do. While my kids KNOW that we do not litter on the trail, I am not bothered by my kids becoming excited when they see something neat or new to them. Just yesterday my five year old son and I went on a hike that left us on top of a huge rock outcrop. When he wanted to jump off a boulder that was 4 or 5 feet above the trail, I was fine. Now had someone else came by, I would have made him stop. But when he was jumping, laughing, hollering, and just generally having a good time, I was happy for him. If you turn a hike with your kids into something boring or into a military experience, do you honestly think the hobby will interest them?? Just let me know where and when you and your friend are going to hike, I'll be sure my kids and I aren't there, enjoying the outdoors by laughing and having a good time.

Whoa, now, no need to be sarcastic. I think that most people can make the distinction between excited kids having a good time, as they should on the trail, and people with kids, and other day hikers who have no concept of leave no trace and trail ethics. These are the types of people I want to avoid on my hike, not someone who is an experienced hiker.

Well, really touched a nerve there. It came across in your original thread as children shouldn't be in the wood at all. So far as people/day hikers with children on the trail, the ones with disrespectful kids, it usually applies to the parents as well. Neither one, the adults or the kids belong out in the woods.

No, that was not my intent. My point was that if a trail is accessible enough for whole families to lug all of their equipment over to the backcountry campsites, my buddy is not interested, as he is looking for something less accessible for this trip. Again, we want something that is not heavily travelled by adults or children.

OK I see what you are saying now. It just sort of touched a nerve as both of my kids love hiking and I love hiking with them. When I thought I read a thread slamming people for having their kids on the trail, I was pi$$ed. Anyway, I understand. I dont like seeing folks who have no business out there. But on that same note, we were all hiking/camping newbies at some point in our life. Instead of turning our noses up at those people, we should teach them how and what is expected on trails like the CBT. Later!h

LOL! Yeah, last year I had an experience going up the Dockery Lake Trail to Preaching Rock and the AT for an overnight, and on the way up we were behind a mom and two kids who were leaving behind a trail of cheetos, water bottles, pork rind packages, etc. We picked up their litter and gave it to them when they were on their way down - boy did they look surprised! I didn't intend to come across as a trail snob, but that's the type of experience I'm trying to avoid, and I just wanted some advice for some of the areas that I have not traversed.

The BMT from Springer to 3 Forks is prettier than the AT and you'll be quite alone. At Bryson, take the side trail to the spring then continue past the spring 50 yard'ish to a great campsite. You can stash your packs in the woods there and do the Bryson to Bridge and back with just water bottles.
Unless the Rangers are doing their war game schenanigans in the area, Bryson's about as isolated as you can get in GA.
I like the less busy trails also, thats why I've only hiked about a mile of the AT.
I would have to drive past trails more to my preference to get to a AT trailhead.
Now that I have sons big enuff to hike, I'm more likely to hike some of the AT.

'Kay, we're gonna give the ol' CBT another shot the weekend of Feb 16 - 17. So far the cast of characters is Skids and myself, with a possible cameo appearance by John30563.
For those who have missed it, the Coosa is about 13 miles, and a relatively challenging trail, considering its' length. While not extremely rugged there are a few 1,000' grades and relatively little flat hiking. Weather is highly variable this time of year so I strongly recommend keeping an eye on the forecast if you'd like to come along.
Might need your warm winter woolies, might not.
Couple of administrative details:
First, we'll meet at the Vogel State Park Visitor's Center at 9:30, unless I hear a bunch of whining, in which case we can move that around a little.
Next, please note that the "Skids & TS" pledge to not drink within a mile of a shelter on the CBT is still in effect. Anyone who violates this sacred commitment will be smeared in peanut butter and honey, and then staked out on the floor of the shelter.
Come to think of it, I've gotten that backwards. Allow me to revise that slightly. We'll stake you out on the floor of the shelter, then smear you in peanut butter and honey.* After that we'll mosey down the trail for a mile or so and finish off your liquor. :)
*Why wrestle with someone smeared in peanut butter and honey when you can apply the condiments after the pledge violator is comfortably ensconced in the shelter? Heck, get that backwards and EVERYONE's smeared in peanut butter and honey.

After speed hiking the CBT you're qualified to . . . well . . . walk really fast at the mall!
I load my pack and show up on time; that's about it for prep and training for me. Anyone in decent shape ought to be able to handle this trail, but if you're seriously out of condition or carry a heavy pack the CBT will show you the error of your ways.
What shelter? The shelter we're going to stake you out in if you violate the "Skids & TS" pledge, of course.

I load my pack and show up on time; that's about it for prep and training for me. Sheesh. I don't just lob him a softball, I painted a big red and white target on it and hung it waist high over the plate. And he bunts?!
I've got the GATC trail maintence trip penciled into the calandar on Saturday and I need to show up after spacing out on that DRT thing. So about where are y'all going to be Saturday night?

Man ...you guys are going to have that trail all cleared and beaten down if you keep this up.
I might have to fly back to Georgia an hike the loop ...

Sooo, oh great Cavorter with Rodents, what's the plan?
my son and I did the CBT over Labor Day 07. It wasn't crowded we did it counter clockwise. We ran into 4 day hikers, 1 backpacker, and two car campers. Their is a FS road that you cross twice, that is where we ran into the car campers. We camped just short of where the CBT joins the Duncan Ridge Trail. Soon after we left the campsite I told my son how nice it was to be on one of the remotest trails in GA, about that time I heard something in the distance, I thought, damn is that a generator. Sure enough we walked a little further and people had set up a triple room tent, with a big blue tarp covering it, across the trail they had a tarp, and under it they were running their generator, had big ice chest. They had carried all that stuff several hundred feet up a steep hill from their car. I couldn't believe it. Never saw them, spoke to them inside their tent as we walked by.
BTW it was the cleanest trail I have ever walked in GA. Well blazed (too many) Good hike.

Sooo, oh great Cavorter with Rodents, what's the plan?I haven't heard anything about the next DRT trip. Those have been weekday trips so I believe we earn karma points at overtime rates. I need to talk to the union rep about that.
But I do want to attend the GATC's little 3rd Saturday of the month get together.

. . . Soon after we left the campsite I told my son how nice it was to be on one of the remotest trails in GA, about that time I heard something in the distance, I thought, damn is that a generator. . . Absolute classic.
Ya know, the CBT could be the goofy version of the Bermuda Triangle. Did I ever tell ya about the time this pack of gomers showed up on the forest service road at Wildcat Knob in a 35' RV?
With a 17' inboard/outboard boat on a trailer.
Said gomers seemed somewhat put out when my friends and I informed them that there wasn't a lake at the top of Coosa Bald. Of course the fact that we were rolling around on the ground laughing our heads off while we informed them probably had something to do with the way the gomers received that little piece of navigational insight.
Not that it mattered. They'd already hung the lower unit of the inboard/outboard and it was gonna need some serious wrenching before that boat was ready to go back in the water.
But I do want to attend the GATC's little 3rd Saturday of the month get together.Sooo, you gonna tell us what the plan is or are you gonna continue yanking my chain? Bear in mind that
it might be more fun to mess with me on a trail maintenance trip.
I'll probably do a better job of keeping up with the calendar and may save you from having to start another "stupid, stupid, stupid" thread.
with me as a native guide you're almost guaranteed to find the top secret campsite at the intersection of the CBT and the DRT.

Plan? Me? Whoa, now there's an idea.
Here's the situation: On Saturday Feb 16 the GATC has their 3rd Sat of the Month trail maintenance, this one will be led by Awesome Lawson. I plan to attend. I don't know what section we'll on.
About the time we'll be finishing breakfast you and Skids and company are planning to set out on the Coosa.
I'm trying to figure out how to intersect these two activities. Maybe I can meet y'all afterwards. There's nothing I like more after doing trail work all day, probably in the rain, than to drive down a winding narrow forest service road, put on a backpack and walk up a cold, dark mountain yelling for some guys who are waiting for me with jars of honey and peanut butter.

Here is my thing, I hiked Panther Creek Trail in Habersham last weekend (not this past weekend) and it is really rooty and rocky. I turned my foot a couple of times. It was sore as $h1t for about 4 days and is still not 100%. It knocked me out of my weekly hike yesterday. So, considering we have two weeks, it ought to be OK, but I'm still playing it by ear.

You can stay at either Vogel or Lake Winfield Scott. Vogel is the trailhead and where you get a permit.

Yeah, the cabins at Vogel are fairly nice for state park cabins. They have tent sites and RV sites. Hiker Hostel is pretty close by. You might also call Winton at Mountain Crossings. I don't know if he runs the hostel there year round or not, but it couldn't hurt to ask, right? Any of those options puts you pretty darned close. Any of them will sure let you sleep later than I am going to get to sleep.

I think you might be on to something, seems like this would definetly be a place I could get a good nights sleep and even sleep in if I want too. I highly recommend Cabin 4. "Rustic", as they say, no TV or phone but the shower's hot, the heat works and the bed's soft. And it's right beside a mountain stream. And the owner, Keith, is too cool. He's got a Georgia accent so thick and slow that you'll be tempted to sit down, put your feet up and wait for him to finish a sentence.
If you make reservations tell him a guy that juggles machetes recommended his place. I'm afraid he'll know exactly who you mean but he might let you stay anyway.
Today I helped haul a pickup truckload of wood chips to Hawk Mtn shelter (for the privy) and carried out a small stash of trash. Easy stuff, really, but I am now so sore and I got so winded on that little climb. I may need to rethink my winter conditioning program of nonstop computer surfing.
So next weekend I plan to do trail maintenance all day then hoof up Coosa Bald? What was I thinking? I'll only make it if there's sufficient motivation...

You wanna carry it? I have a fine taste in bourbon.
Well honestly, I dont really have a really reliable way to weigh it. I get on the scales, get my weight, then my wife hands me the bag and I wrap it around my shoulders. I've weighed it about 3 times that way. Thats the same way I usually weigh my pack. I laid outside in my other down bag tonight, the one that had the odor. It wasn't bad, but I did get a slight chill after 30 minutes, and it was only 45 out. But the wind was gusting to 30mph. So who knows which one I'll carry, I probably won't decide until Friday.
How far is Wildcat knob? You guys gotta remember, I am a newbie to this thing. Only six or eight 7+ mile hike day hikes under my belt. LOTS of 2-3 mile day hikes though. I guess we'll see saturday what I can do. Whats the earliest we can get into Vogel Saturday morning?

Hey Hammock!! I have never actually "camped" in my hammock. I will need some hammock guidance. Let's take a look at the weather mid week and try to set something up. I don't do rain. I think I could do down to around 25*F, so barring any rain or extreme low cold, I'd be ready to go ahead and pencil in next weekend. Oh yeah, also barring I don't catch this crap that is in my house.
The wife's logic with me going ahead and hiking is she'd be better by the time I got home and wouldn't catch it. I actually thought we would get in a shouting argument over me staying home.

We meet a few people along the way(which by what skids and two speed say is unusual)

Well I hate I missed it for sure. Yesterday was text book. At one point yesterday around 2 PM my outdoor digital thermometer read 73*F. And I am only about 20 miles southeast of the trail. I am sure it was in the upper 60s on the trail. But around lunch today when the fog rolled in and the winds picked up............there was a small part of me that said, man I'm glad I ain't up on that mountain.
But nonetheless if you look over on the hooking up forum, I am going to try to tackle the CBT next weekend, weather depending. And hopefully with some company.
Oh BTW, sleeping on the couch when your wife lies in the bed with the flu.............it's worse than sleeping in your hammock on the top of a mountain!! She is much better now and back to bossing me around.

Awesome campfire. We managed to solve all the world's problems but no one remembered what was decided by the next morning. One thing we decided was that when heading home from a backpacking trip and you're in a hurry to get to either beer, a fast food outlet, or both then it's perfectly OK to drive quickly over speed bumps. Or, as some people call them, "bicycle riders".
Two Speed

Uh, actuallly that was YOU that decided that. The rest of us decided using a bicyclist or two as a speed bump sounded pretty good, but very likely to lead to legal complications, particularly after getting that first beer.
Fortunately it was raining and cold by the time Skids, gungho and myself got out of VSP so we had no obstacles between ourselves and the object of our desire.
Which in this case was a cup of coffee. Yeesh, we're turning into wimps. First we won't run over bicyclists, then we settle for java instead of beer.

Unless it's not tied or staked down very well. Then there's no telling where it could land.

And no telling whose hands it would fall into after 70 mph gusts:eek:

Ummm, while we're at it I've got an idea. The next time the wind looks like getting serious what say we truck on down towards Wolf Pen Gap? Coupla good looking spots down that way and maybe we won't have the wind tunnel effect all night.
I know, it's a wild and crazy idea, but sometimes I just can't help myself.

I know, it's a wild and crazy idea, but sometimes I just can't help myself. Yeah, being woken up by motorcycles is better than being kept up by the jet stream. I've camped at Wolf Pen before, east side of road, down an old forest service road beside a stream. It's really pretty nice.
sorry It took so long guys, But I just posted more photographic evidence of our trip:eek::-?:banana

I can say this now, that Coosa will kick your a$$. I began to wonder if it would ever stop going up. And who are these folks who seem to have an aversion to switchbacks???

Hey John, were you able to complete the whole trail?

Hey John, were you able to complete the whole trail?
No, I got a real pain in my thigh about 3/4 the way up Coosa and bailed this morning with Reeper. The thing felt like someone stuck a knife in it and twisted it around all night. I knew I'd never make Slaughter in that shape. I appreciate you helping Reeper stash that truck at Wildcat for sure. I think I'll go back in a few weeks with a lot less weight and do it clockwise back to a stashed vehicle at Wildcat.
Hey Reeper, did you find Kip this morning when you went back?

John, lots of folks have bailed out on the CBT. Skids and I will be cranking up another trip in a couple of weeks or so. Do some walking, think about what worked, what didn't, etc and come on and give it another shot. As I've said before, the CBT is a GREAT training loop.
Now, gotta go check out some photos . . .

Alright, warming this thread up again for another WB trip on the CBT.*
So far I've got a very definite "I might be able to make it, probably, if something doesn't come up" from Skids and a possible walk on by Bulldawg.
Well, Barney's a "fer sure."

I'm just holding out 'til Bulldawg spills the beans about what he plans to carry.
I want to make sure I'm carrying a larger caliber.

Good point. Think I'll stash a coupla rifles and shotguns of various calibers nearby.
Hope yall have a great journey,I guess I will have to sit this one out. Thanks for keeping me up to date though.

You guys crack me up. Let's go target and skeet shooting this weekend??? I have plenty of guns if you need to borrow some. Ammo, you need ammo? I've been stocking up ammo for about 20 years now. You never know when you might need 100-200 rounds on hand for a quick shooting. Do ya think that is why my pack is so heavy? Maybe I don't need to carry those three boxes of ammo? Do you think I can get by with one box of ammo?
Two Speed

Well, have you considered taking the .50 cal out of the original metal containers? You can loose a coupla pounds right there, freeing up more capacity for small arms ammo, like .45 ACP and such.
You do want a balanced ammo load, don't you?

You could very well be right there. I think I will leave the .50 cal stuff at home this time, will save a lot of weight on the ammo and on the firearm that uses it. And hey, if I leave the .50 cal stuff at home, I can pack more small arms and ammo for those without significant weight gain. So like instead of carrying 2 pistols, the .50 cal, and the ammo for each; I can probably care 4 pistols, one under each arm off the shoulder and one on each ankle; plus the ammo for each. And since the two shoulder pistols are the same caliber and the two ankle pistols are the same caliber, that's even less ammo to have to pack. Man, I'm learning so much here about ultralight heat packing backpacking here. But the CBT will force you to do so for sure. I happen to like a small lightweight .380 for my ankles pieces and 9mm or .40 cal pieces for my shoulder holster. What do you guys like?

Just warming this thread up, how's about we meet at VSP at 9:30?
Bulldawg, that means we should pull into Wildcat Knob sometime between 3 and 4 o'clock.
Sly, that means you'd need to be at my place by 7:30.
Skids, that means you'd have to be at VSP at 9:30. ;)

That's what I was wondering too.
We'd have our token hammocker to complement the cast of gun-toters, hippies, engineers, and other assorted ne'er-do-wells.
That would mean trouble. :D
