In just over two weeks, the Appalachian Long-Distance Hikers Association will be having it annual hiker gathering. This year, it'll be in Gettsysburg PA, 5-7 October. The Gathering is a wonderful event, especially for anyone actively considering or already planning a long-distance hiking trip.
For more information on what will be hapening, see www.aldha.org There will be lots more information and a full listing of scheduled events as it gets closer to October.
Hope to see many of you there.
If I am not a member of ALDHA, can I get a membership when I get there to join the events?

I planned on joining anyways. I figure if I am hiking the trail next year, I should contribute to the people who help maintain it.

The Gathering is a wonderful event, especially for anyone actively considering or already planning a long-distance hiking trip. This is exactly why I wanted to attend. I have so much I need to learn and what better way than in person from those who have experienced it. But it's not to be. My request for vacation was denied. I am so bummed out. :(
Hope you all have a great time. I'll be thinking about you.

I believe Jester said there was a parking area across the road from the main camping area for large RV's and such last time I spoke with him. Next to an auction house or barn, not sure which. You could always email the coordinator of the Gathering, Dave Hennel, at gathering@aldha.org. to find out for certain.

To support jack's claim, my description of Gettysburg from whiteblaze in 2003:
At the Billville Winter Warmer I will be leading a seminar entitled "How To Lead a Seminar," which will conclude with a slideshow of me leading a seminar.
As for Gettysburg this time of year, I think you miss out on the feel of the whole thing. With a visit in July, you get the heat (of July), the sweat (of overweight tourists), the smoke (of car exhaust), the whole package.
Plus, it's harder to envision the valiant charge of the 4th Nebraska Winnebago Regiment as they charged ponderously up Seminary Ridge. Unlike another better known charge, a retreat was called for quickly when it was determined that the Union positions in front of them had neither pull-throughs nor hook-ups.
See you all at the Doyle!
So RV's, Gettysburg? Long history. See you all there!
PS -- I have a call in to Dave. I'll report back.

I know what you're thinking. You want to bring up certain facts about Nebraska and it's relationship to the South. And then you pause, because you realize that any post involving Winnebagos at the Battle of Gettysburg can only be viewed as entirely historically accurate, or not worth parsing at all. So you buy into the whole thing.

Jester2000-"And then you pause, because you realize that any post involving Winnebagos at the Battle of Gettysburg can only be viewed as entirely historically accurate, or not worth parsing at all."I see the connection. When Ray and I have driven home along I-81 in VA, we've passed the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park when they are having a reenactment. With all the canvas tents and period uniforms, there is always a Winnebago nearby to set the mood.....;)

I feel complled to report that once again, Jester's knowledge of the recent unpleasantness between North and South is sadly lacking.
The 4th Nebraska, as anyone knows, was not engaged anywhere near Seminary Ridge, and in fact did not arrive on the field until late on 2 July 1863. They did, however, take part in assisting the general retreat under J.D. Imboden several days later. The use of Winnebagos proved most efficient, and it is credibly reported that not one Webber Grill or Bug Zapper was lost while crossing the Potomac.
It is gratifying to see Jester have such an interest in our nation's past, but it is unfortunate to see so many errors in his scholarship. As he continually describes himself as a "folk educator" these errors are a real shame to see. I suggest for enlightenment on Civil War matters, especially regarding Gettysburg, he should consult Wookie, our resident expert on all things historical, and perhaps Weary, who of course personally witnesed the events in question, tho he was allegedly NOT in the building when the actual Bug Zapping was in progress. At least that's what his website says.
Oh sorry, that was meant for another thread..... :D

I agree, although if you want to talk about not getting recognition, it's the 137th New York that got hosed -- did on the right what the 20th Maine did on the left, against greater forces.
But Ireland's report was short and to the point, and he died before the war was over.
As for me, I might see you Teej -- I plan to visit the 1st Minnesota Monument that morning, and then swing by Jack's favorite (I think) marker. . .

political boundrys on a globe or a map consist of ever changing lines in wonderful bright cheery colors. the grey and blue uniforms of the confederates and the union soldier looked spiffy en mass when issued. wars are studyed and learned from but sometimes glorified wrongly by those who werent there. from space, no lines are visable. no uniforms. no trace of man or war or any change other than the colors and ice sheets of seasons ever change in reality. that is,.. the reality of space.
but we live earthly lives. and we have earthly disscusions over who fought bravely and who controlled what land and peoples. is not space and its veiw of our home,...a metephisical suggestion of what maby it should be more like down here on earth and down in our hearts? who can wonder and marvel at the civil war and love the re enactments and want to dress up and shoot black powder? who can look at such a place with any but one singular race thaught. that killing of people by people took place here. not what they disagreed on,...rather the story of gettysburg is how men kill. not why. not wearing what or in what named battle. but the shock and horror of it is the death by man. thats the part i cant see past. you should remember not to kill . these folks forgot. they made no rational desicion to defend a way of life , by warring. they went out of their minds and joined a slauter. i dont like it. not one bit. its wrong to kill man. animals yes. man no. kill man and go to hell. i do belive god accepts some killers. but most,...no. with respect .

Jack -- I'll explain to you how humor works when I see you at the Gathering, as well as why I'm perfectly comfortable with the fact that you know more about history than I do.
I will attribute the fact that you leave my comments regarding the 137th New York unmolested to either
a)agreement on your part
b)the necessary research time on your part trying to prove me wrong regarding the death of Col. Ireland
or
c)the belief on your part that the less said about the ancestors of Yankees fans, the better
See you soon!

Hello friends….
As the Gathering nears and we accumulate tidbits of information on this event, we will post them here for you. (Myself or one of many individuals on this site that have been kind enough to do so.)
*There ARE indeed showers at the college campus – if you receive ALDHA’s newsletter, the “The Long Distance Hiker” you can view the college campus map, or view the 12 page PDF on the ALDHA website.
*ALDHA Gathering registration will be in the at the Gathering campground, INSIDE of the barn – yes that’s right-in the barn -and I love it- from 2-5. AFTERWARDS we’ll swing over to the CUB (see below) for more registration until 7:00 p.m. Even if you've prepaid stop by the registration tables and check out your membership record for any updates or corrections for the ALDHA Directory (for example, if you thru-hiked this year).
*There MOST DEFINITELY is an area for campers, park on a hard surface in the event of rain. We can’t be pulling you out of the mud…unless we can post the pictures of it on Whiteblaze.
*EARLY ARRIVALS can stay at the campground Thursday night.
*You do NOT have to be a member of ALDHA to attend the Gathering, but you will have to register and pay $10 per person to attend.
*Walkin’Jim is performing Saturday night.
*Gettysburg College will be on a 3 day weekend break from classes, so dining services will be LIMITED. However, the college is a few block’s walk from restaurants and Lincoln Square. We are hikers, we can do this.
*The Gathering activities will take place at the CUB (College Union Building), in particular the ballroom for the Hiker Fair and entertainment.
…please post any questions you may have…someone will try to answer them.
ALDHA welcomes everyone: hikers, dreamers and their families.
Love to all :sun

So I figure I'll throw this out there, I live about 30-40 miles east of the gathering in York, PA. I'm offering up my place if there are any hikers or trail folk who need a place to crash a few days earlier than the gathering until the start, seeing as how the hitch from Maine to PA is kinda tough, I figure if some thrus want to start hitching early I can put them up for a few days.
On a very mundane subject... Is there anyone in the Charlotte area who would like to ride up together?
Any details on the work party?
Are there any trees in the camping area for hammocks?

Any details on the work party?
I was hoping someone would ask !!!
Quoted from the "Long Distance Hiker" ALDHA's quarterly newsletter....
"Volunteers will convene at Ironmaster's Hostel on Monday morning for a day of cleaning up and repair work of the Mansion and grounds. Details will be provided at the Gathering. Pine Grove Furnace State Park is only a 20 mile drive from Gettysburg."
...If you have not been to this lovely hostel, please try to attend. In February a group (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=15299&c=661) of us meet here to do the same thing. There are many different tasks (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=10252&catid=searchresults&searchid=10187):
-windows and sills
-checking lights and fixtures
-sweeping, mopping, basic cleaning
-basic repairs
In February we did all of the above including Matthewski (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=15297&c=661) replaced an entire toilet.
Donna, the caretaker can be reached at: 717-486-7575
should you have any questions regarding the work or accommodations necessary afterwards.
I do not know what the work would be, but any effort made to participate in this work trip would be appreciated by all!

Well, it appears that we have some serious business at hand here.......sorry, the fun may have to wait. I've recently discovered that there is some suspicion surrounding Mayor Jesters actual species. Now, that is not to say that we here in Billville are opposed to animals/reptiles.....many members are just that. It is only that we Billville underlings do not believe it prudent to have reptiles in politics. Therefore the mayor will be facing a very salem-esqe trial with a jury of his peers to determine once and for all if Mayor Jester is a hiker/human, or has been a turtle disguised as a human. WOuld answer a few questions, would it not?
I encourage everyone to meet me at my tent friday night at sundown for the official mob registration and distribution of torches. Of course, if Mayor Jester really is a turtle, as so many suspect, he will be pretty darn easy to catch.........oh, and bring a big net.
hi! matt weinstone here. philly hikers. question for starlyte. ms starlyte,...our readers want to know,...is it true your sweet?
question for mayor jester. mayor,..can you confirm or deny roumors circulating widely that you will be attending the festivitys of this years aldha gathering as huckelberry hound?
mr lonewolf mrlonewolf if i may ......matt weinstone , philly hikers. alot of our readers belive you are a shill for whiteblaze adding spice to a bland pot. any comment?
miss wonder! miss wonder! will you tell our readers what to exspect at this years gathering ? some in the know say that your the center of whats hip in this town......any comment?
Well, it appears that we have some serious business at hand here.......sorry, the fun may have to wait. I've recently discovered that there is some suspicion surrounding Mayor Jesters actual species. Now, that is not to say that we here in Billville are opposed to animals/reptiles.....many members are just that. It is only that we Billville underlings do not believe it prudent to have reptiles in politics. And so, Starlyte, are you saying that we will not be in an auditorium for Walkin' Jim's concert?--Kinnickinic
So, back to my question, it sounds like Walkin' Jim's concert will be a seated-on-the-floor-of-the-Union-Hall event. In that case I'm bringing along my comfy blue Crazy Creek chair. What fun!--Kinnickinic

Are there any trees in the camping area for hammocks?
If I recall correctly, there were some trees along the northern border of the camping area, near a small creek. I'm not sure how appropriate they'll be for hammocks; the camping area is mainly a big field. How do you feel about stringing it between trucks?

If the concert is in the main hall (and I believe it is) there will be plenty of chairs, although I don't think anyone will look at you strangely should you opt for the floor.
I will neither confirm nor deny my turtleness.

So about how far is the camping area from the campus? i know we are all hikers here, but reasonable walking distance away? Or, better to drive over distance wise?

The camping area is, I believe, about 3 miles north of the college campus, which is itself just north of town. Part of the road in doesn't have sidewalks, though, so I'd say drive, or bring a bicycle. You could walk, though. It's closer to the school than what is the case in West Virginia, and probably close or just a bit longer than what is the case in Hanover.
How's that for long and vague?

Never tried it but certainly would. I'll also bring a tent.
I think I'll bring my hammock stand - I am assuming that the area for camping is basically flat - right?

some extra information for any nervous overplanning detail lovers, and closet same. the campcground is located at 39 degrees 14 minutes 9 seconds west longitude and south by south east. their is a dome shaped one inch pebble as you aproch the apogee of the outhouse parabellum. also note blades of grass 4009224 thru 4009278 have dog doo on them so you might want to veer 9 nautical inches west and slow to mach 6 or under. other than that ,...have a blast!
oh, before i forget. their are 36 sharp twigs distributed randomly about the feild so pitch carefully!

Registration, of course, especially on Saturday. See Marsha.
You'll find me most of Saturday in ALDHA Central (CUB ballroom) manning the ALDHA table, dealing with merchandise, and trying to hold down the fort.
I could use help to cover the merchandise from 9:45 - 11:30 am on Saturday while I am off to host a Gathering session, and again on Sunday afternoon during the steering committee meeting. (2:30-4:30).
Thanks!

Crazy question here: I'm coming in Friday morning from DC Area. Are there any directions to the actual campsite? All I see is that it's at the "Redding farm north of the Gettysburg College".

Damn - I've been there enough times but I can't remember the names of the places or the exact street addresses - I can only find them if I'm there. But one suggestion: in the middle of town is a square and right on one of the corners is a pub. It used to be known simply as The Pub. Now I believe it's called Century on the Square and McClelland''s Tavern. You can't miss it. Don't know about the quality of their steaks but I've liked every meal I've had there and of course they have a full range of drinks.
There is a local coffee shop on one of the streets shortly off the square going towards the Seminary but I don't remember the name either.
Sorry I'm so vague but rest assured that there are a fair amount of establishments within walking distance in the downtown area.

Really sorry not to be able to attend the Gathering, but I can't ask for more time from work after getting leave for March hike - and it takes longer to go to and from PA and Maine than the workshop itself takes...bummer.
Hope it's a great time for all.

You want to hit the DC Beltway before 1 (remember, it's a holiday weekend) so if you leave Raleigh around 7-8 AM, you're probably OK. Remember: 103.5 FM.
Regarding any other bypass, all those I can think of do add extra miles. Traveling west to Greensboro and picking up US 29 north is the best. Most of 29 is high-speed. It slows down a lot in Charlottesville where if I was traveling this way, I'd then pick up I-64 west to 81 and then north from there.
Packin' my stuff today. Leaving as early as I can get away Thursday morning. Can hardly wait. Looks like another great one.
Choosing among all the programs is going to be tough. But, according to the events schedule, the Appalachian Trail Museum, Board of Directors will meet from 1-2:30 Sunday afternoon at Masters Hall. This is a great chance to meet the board members, to see and hear what's hap'nin with the Museum, and to be involved in the process.

We tend to be really busy at the Gathering, spending all day on campus either in workshops or talking to friends, then participating in the evening festivities. That means we won't want to go back to the campground to cook, we'll just bring lunch with us and then grab a quick dinner in town between activities. The cafeteria on campus isn't going to be open since the students will all be gone, so it limits the options.

Real hikers roll their own. A pack of Bugler costs less than $2 and lasts me a week or two on the trail. Comes with papers, too. ;) But I'm not aware of any low-cost solution to the beer requirement.

real hikers don't smoke and have plenty of cash
I'm gonna bring a mix of snacks. I plan to spend most of Friday hiking the battlefield (if I can get set up at the campground ok before noon). I'll prolly carry a sandwhich with me. I'll also bring a small grill and some grillables for the campsite. Oh, and beer. mucho beer.
Just a note, what's the water situation on the battlefield? Should I bring my water filter? (j/k)
BUT you'll have plenty of $$ for cigarettes and beer. :) like most who plead poverty
I'm not gonna buy beer and ciggs in PA where I'll pay twice as much......that would be stupid. I can afford to smoke and eat by cutting corners with both.....happy camper all around!!
Is beer supposed to be legal at this campsite??

No, we're hoping to forgo the disaster that happened the first year that everyone was in the campground at Trail Days. Parking will be to the left once you turn off the road.
If you make the mistake of trying to park next to your tent, you won't be able to leave until all the tents that spring up around your vehicle leave. So drop your stuff off and then move the car to the parking area. Or not. Parking is right there. You can all probably carry your stuff 50 ft. or so.

Hello everyone,
I'm here in Gettysburg, arrived yesterday afternoon.
Campers are arriving early and setting up at Redding Farm. Yesterday afternoon, I would say there were about 50 people here already, and 2 enormous RVs. Some campers were set up under a row of black walnut trees.
Redding Farm is private property; Civil War re-enactments take place there. HUGE field, great for letting your dogs run around too. This farm is gigantic!!!
The weather is absolutely perfect for camping. A heavy dew has fallen and there is thick layer everywhere, which will make for great photography at sunrise on the battlefields.
I drove along countryside roads last night, thru Hanover and over to Stewartstown PA where a large group of people were having a bbq and campout; they will all be driving up here this morning for the Gathering.
If you have any reservations about attending, change your mind. It's beautiful here, the weather is perfect, and the best of company.
Gotta go...sunrise is at 7:02 a.m.

When you go to the Gathering:
are you going to eat your meals in a restaurant,
or are you going to make your own meals at the campsite like a real hiker would?
I went back to the campsite during all the breaks and cooked for those in the Billville area. And still had time to go to the sessions at the college. We enjoyed peanut butter soup with roasted garlic on Friday evening. Bag O Tricks made spicy jumbo hot dogs. Saturday lunch we had cheeseburger soup. Saturday Supper I made barbecued chicken and portebella mushroom pasta. And Sunday morning breakfast we enjoyed egg and cheese sandwiches. Jester's Mom brought subs for us all to enjoy on Friday afternoon. And lots of her home made cakes and pies for the whole weekend. We finally finished off the last of her scrumptious apple cake on Sunday afternoon.
In the picture attached, Gnat makes the cheeseburger soup following Mary's Instructions.

I had a great time - good to finally meet some of you guys and put faces to the trail names or screen names since some of you hike under a name other than your screen name.
Jester took us all for a drag (that must be what a trail dog feels like some days) aroud Gettisburg - much to much stuff to see and cover in half a day - it would take 2 to 3 days to get it all in right.
Baltimore Jack gave a great presentation on preparing for a thru-hike that gave aout a great deal of good information without telling anyone how to hike.
Jack and Wolf escored us to the southern end of the battlefield for a good view of how scary that had to be for the Confederates. I would not have wanted to be there that day.
Starylite, as usual, made everyone feel like she had been waiting at the registration table for JUST THEM the entire time she was there - what a great person!
Sorry I didn't make the business meeting because of slow moving kids. I wanted to go talk to them about trimming down a guide to the Companion - Lite edition. I have already done 1/4 of it - it isn't that hard and I work for free.
Finally, if you didn't make it - I wish I could have gotten to see you all there. Maybe someday.
