Hi all !
I'm looking for the generally accepted sources about ultralight backpacking. I want to know the litterature that lead to the "sport" before even looking at gear. Basically I'm looking for three things :
Ultralight Backpacking Books
Ultralight Backpacking Online Resources (websites and such)
Where can I find Ray Jardine's out-of-print book
Thanks

Ray Jordin or Jardin? I've seen the book under used in barne's and nobelist.
The best ultra lite backpacking book is the book of hard knocks - still, on this sight is a LOT of stuff.
The truth of ultra lite is a variable - what do you think you must have and where is the lightest good stuff. Ray Jordin will teach that you don't need much IF you know how to do without.

Hehe thanks for the replies. Obviously I know this site is a great resource :banana However I was under the impression that a book of some sort sparkled all the ehthusiasm we find here. And...I like books :D

I liked Ryan Jordan's book (http://www.amazon.com/Lightweight-Backpacking-Camping-Wilderness-Equipment/dp/0974818828/ref=sr_1_1/102-4588947-4789711?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190655113&sr=8-1).

Backpackinglight.com is a fantastic resource. It's subscription-based, though.

Try again...no link found.
The correct URL for Jardine's site is: www.rayjardine.com
However, as the original post states, Beyond Backpacking is out of print, and not available from Jardine. You may be able to find a copy at a used bookstore. The prices I've seen online are outrageous.

Hey Motabobo,
Well, it's nice to see a familiar name on Whiteblaze! Can't do anything but agree that Ray Jardine's Beyond Backpacking was a lot of help, although I could never get quite to that extreme. Gets you thinking, though!

It's a lightweight backpacking forums and general website. West-coast based primarily.
I didn't find Ray Jardine that helpful. His book was good when it came out, but it's stuff that anyone who wantst to go lightweight figures out after a month or so of hiking.

The PCT Hikers Handbook, the prerequisite to Beyond Backpacking was published in 1992...you were 8 years old. At that time most people were wearing heavy boots and 40-60 lb packs. At the time it was revolutionary . Wile some of us were fingering things out for ourselves with our own innovations and mistakes, it was a great resource for those of us in the mid 90's that were working on lighter gear that just wasn't available at the time. For those that haven't had the chance to spend a lot of time on the trail or just want to read it historically, I'm sure they will still find it useful and eye opening. Do you carry a base weight under 20 lb instead of over 40 lb? Have you ever used a tarp? A light weight back pack? Thank Ray Jardine and others in his era for promoting the concept, that at the time was way out of the ordinary.
