I've never forded the mighty K myself.:o Saw it done by several folks and it looked pretty easy. The real danger seemed to be turning an ankle. I've crossed my share of rivers and can say that the closest I've ever felt to dying was fording....... chest deep rivers that were icey cold and stuff like that. I never put too much thought into fording or not. If there is a bridge (or canoe) I take it. It's all about keeping my girlie feets dry.:o ;)

Judging from time on rivers, my quess is that the river is 8-12' deep where the canoe crosses however where you actually ford the river about 100 yards upstream, it never reached my waist and I'm a short *****.

Max Patch post #523 Will Doyle jump off that bridge too?

If the water was deep enough (which it probably wouldn't be) and if the bridge was low enough (which it probably would be). So the answer would be probably not based on the probable height of the bridge and the probable depth of the water.

Some relatively safe bridge jumping sites along the trail are:
1) the James River
2) Boiling Springs
3) the White River
4) the Connecticut River

I try not to do things that might jeopardize my safety, fording the Kennebec in the early morning when the rock bars are showing upstream is not one of them.

It is illegal to jump off of most all bridges.

Surely you are not surprised that Doyle is once again advocating illegal activity. Or, that he is pronouncing certain bridges as "relatively safe" to jump off of when he has not scientifically studied the river below and has very incomplete information about the possible presence of hazards such as rocks and shallow water, not to mention that conditions can change at any time. I'm sure he'll be the first person volunteering to change the diapers of any new quadraplegics caused by his "advice".

The amount of under water junk (bikes, tires, metal stuff) that we found throw off bridges was remarkable.

In re. to Post #537 from W. Doyle:

A truly ignorant post. People have been injured jumping off both the bridge in West Hartford VT and the Ledyard Bridge in NH into the Connecticut River.

Mr. Doyle doesn't live here, so he really doesn't know the facts.

He's either speaking out of ignorance (surprise!!) or he just doesn't care.

Or maybe both.

If he wants to put himself at risk doing this sort of thing, that's entirely his right.

To encourage others to do so, or to flat out lie and say this sort of thing is risk-free and perfectly safe, is just wrong.

He's been asked many times to stop putting this sort of s*** on this website.

I must conclude he just doesn't care.

namely the ALDHA COMPANION. a few prominent members get to the editors and you're out! Uncle Johnny's Hostel comes to mind.
While I've only met Wingfoot once, on his "golden anniversary" hike in the smokies, I would have to say he seems to be two people. On one hand he is the Left wing, Bush bashing, intollerant, political, nutjob, that can't seem to see that the trail and politics are generally two different subjects. As thin skinned as he is, he is willing to place services like Uncle Johnny's in his guide when the ALDHA Companion won't. He didn't seem to take sides on the trail, only pollitics. The thing that does bother me about him is that he always seemed to bash people as cold hearted capitalists. Seeing him sell everything he ever touched on his website strikes me as capitalism with a capital C. I would say he is God, but I think he would say he is better than that.

There aren't really many external or social costs to him selling all that junk which is what I bet he fussed about when he bashed capitalists. It's a rather benign form of capitalism. I was impressed that people bought the stuff at those prices. Nobody bought the hat, I'm glad, he should keep that.

It will be at Trail Days in a secure area; one of the bearded lady booths from the fair, you can't see her, but you hear the hawker annoucing her presence. My Aunt Teresa retired, so she's letting me use her booth.

One dollar to see it.

Two dollars fifty cent to smell it and get a picture of you smelling it.

Five dollars you can wear it for a brief moment and get your picture taken.

Ten dollars and you can do the nasty while wearing it, but you got be quick and no munky stuff on it or there will be a $10 cleaning fee.
