:welcome Almost every time I log in early in the evenings I see people that are browsing the WhiteBlaze site but they are not logged in. They just look around the site as guest. Why don’t you GUESTs take the time to log in if you like what you see. We do not send spam mail or we do not release your email address for others to find out.
So there is no harm in signing in. In fact if you sign in and register you can benefit from it if you decide to come back. You can just click the “new posts” button and you won’t have to sort through what is not new. You may even want to post someday.
:-? But it is your choice. We are here to help and share information.
If you are interested in the Appalachian Trail or just doing some hiking, backpacking or just a day hike or trek then you have come to the right spot.
We have all types of hikers here on WhiteBlaze. Not all of the people here have thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. Some are just preparing to thru-hike and some are just dreaming of one.
Asked the experienced people here on the site whether it be about what type of backpack is best to where the best hiking is. You are sure to get a load of answers and increase your knowledge of the Appalachian Trail and its community.
:D Come on in and join us we do not bite.
CharlesDarwin 01-23-2004, 13:37 I read your article, so I went ahead and registered. I am a newbie to backpacking/hiking and could use some advice from an experienced backpacker. I have thoroughly research the gear, newbie guides, etc. I thought for the first experience I'd start fairly close to home, so I chose Northern New Jersey, High Point area. I was wondering if any of your members have experience in that area? Or if you know of some good sites about that area, particulary with waypoints. Thanks!
Blue Jay 01-23-2004, 13:55 Go north and try and find the Secret Shelter. A clue, listen for donkeys.
All of the AT in New Jersey is nice. From Highpoint going south, you get great views to the east while ridge walking. From Highpoint going north (well, actually it's east, but northbound!) you get a lot of diversity, from nice forest walking, marshland, farm fields, and when you get back on the ridge just before you hit NY state, you can even see the distant skyline of New York City.
Best wishes this New Year, inordinately warm in Tallhasssee, hope your hiking goes well.
Michael
Hi,
I'm new to this site and yes, I've registered. attroll! I really am looking forward to this site. I've been on the at-l for years. I'm more of a section hiker or day hiker, but I LOVE the Appalachians!:p
Laurel ('cause I love mountain laurel)
Welcome aboard laurel! There is a great bunch of folks here, now there is one more!
Catsgoing 01-27-2005, 17:35 Maybe they are whiteblaze people not wanting to be seen online????
Finally, I can post a message. Registration was not that easy. We don't have any AT in Florida but in 8 hours I can be on the approach to the trail head at Springer. Have met many folks coming down the AT between there and the NC border. Stop, lean on the stick and find out where everyone is. I did not realize until I had spent a week out rambling that you aren't really alone - there is always a presence of other travelers around. I suppose that is a little like this site. Anyway, good to be here - Wheels
Tim Rich 02-15-2005, 07:06 Welcome, Charles Darwin, Laurel and Wheels!

I just want to comment on what a wonderful this is. I am a sucessful thru hiker but before that I tried to be a trail angel and was a section hiker, mostly in New England. I also maintain a section of the AT on Saddleback Mountain in Maine. I learned about Trailplace from a section hiker in the late 90's and spent many wonderful hours in it's chatroom before my thru hike. Using that forum I learned much from other hikers that I later used sucessfully. I was thrown off Trailplace when the administrator and I didn't agree on having an "open forum" but I was later allowed back. When Trailplace sort of fell apart I was one of the first members of AT Trailchat and alot of the old Trailplace Chatters and I carried on for a few years. A few months ago a fellow thru hiker from 2000, Amtrack, told me about Whiteblaze and I signed on. It is the most informative AT forum I could have ever imagined. Everyones opinion is appreciated and even though it may not be accepted by other hiker the right to that opinion is tolerated and understood. More experienced hikers and those just starting out exchange ideas. There is a wealth of information and knowledge here that is available nowhere else. I appreciate all the work the founders and administrator of this site put in. I thank you and I appreciate that you have made it available to me and my fellow AT lovers.
Patrickjd9 07-05-2005, 11:57 I just signed up last night after a couple of visits. I am 45, an experienced maintainer living in Maryland. Having some health (and life) issues keeping me from backpacking at the moment.
I just signed up last night after a couple of visits. I am 45, an experienced maintainer living in Maryland. Having some health (and life) issues keeping me from backpacking at the moment. Welcome aboard, Patrick. You will find plenty of information and interesting topics here, to help you stay connected to the Trail, while you deal with issues.
Good luck.
Roland
Patrickjd9 07-05-2005, 14:11 Thank you, Roland. I will be doing some day hiking (and a little trail work with friends in Virginia) in the coming months.
It also seems that my backpacking partners have scattered in the past couple of years, so once I am able to backpack again I'll need to find new ones.
maxNcathy 01-13-2006, 22:00 Thanks very much for the welcome. Got email from Kerosene.
I hope to learn lots about hiking on this site as Cathy and I plan to do more and more over the next few years. Max
1happyhiker 10-18-2006, 17:12 ive been lurking for over a year. so many sites get hacked or bots screw around with everything. i got tired of getting spammed and just browse a lot of sites. there was a rash of bs last year on a site that was reselling emails too.
there has always been good info here, its not that the world is full of conspiracy theorist and everyone wants to be a "guest". i know for one as a 6' 5 guy i like my breast the way they are and get tired of people offering to help me increase their size.
