They have already been asked about the "hefty" version over on hammock forums. Probably won't be long.

I wonder if there is a way that you can use your treking poles instead of those spreader bars

Yes, but the Jacks seem to be worried that trekking poles will damage the hammock.

Correction: risk damaging the poles, NOT the hammock.

Didn't proof-read, sorry.

Is it just me (a lowly ground dweller), or are hammock dwellers way too evangelical about it? I'd probably be more interested in trying it out if so many hammockers didn't sound like wild eyed believers who had seen the WAY, the LIGHT and the TRUTH.

Well, the guy that first came up with the idea of sleeping in a hammock must have been a Basptist. It's the same reason they don't have basements here in the South. It keeps them a little farther from H$&&.

Seriously, I have found it to be a way to extend my camping. Sleeping on the ground is just so damned uncomfortable.

Just one of those things that you tend to get excited about. When the pain and soreness that you've just learned to accept as 'part of the deal' goes away; well, it makes you want to go preach it. :)

That's true, I guess we do get a little over enthused about our new found pleasure and comfort while backpacking. But Hey, as an ex ground dweller (25 years worth), I just say "To each his own"! and "Whatever turns you on"! If that's the ground, then have at it, brothers and sisters. My trips still consist of both groups.

Although, this year I did notice a change in my ground dwelling friends. Last year their attitude was mostly one of disdain. And rightly so, as I did not know what I was doing and was in the midst of a steep learning curve, especially with trying to keep warm ( in Wyoming Sept., above 10000 ft) and dry in my supershelter. But by the end of the week this year, a week of watching me sit and lounge in obvious comfort, and break and setup camp much faster than they did, they kept moseying over to the hammock and asking questions and checking it out. I even heard them both mention to each other that they might have to look into this craziness further. All without any encouragement from me or the other hammock hanger.

But again, whatever turns them on, don't matter to me. If they are happier down there, then I'm all for them staying there. I still have to go there every now and then anyway, unfortunately, above timberline and such. To each his own! :)

I think thats just the way it has become in the last decade, whenever equipment is concerned:
Opinion too often replaces personal experience.
I sometimes think that people more and more tend to think that the sun shines out of one of their lower orifices and that everything said controversly from someone else is an insult against their own person.
Being able to try, listen, think and reflect critically has never been mans foremost virtue.
The unwillingness to try something out oneself and find out whether its ok or not is ever increasing. Instead their are questions asked which can not be answered, because everyone is different.
And the web being the medium to spread opinion has added to this considerably.
And about Hammocks, they can certainly be a great way to sleep more comfortable with a given weight carried.
They are not the be-all-end-all, but worth giving a try.
I first invested € 20,- in a hammock from Byer and used whatever I had lying around for insulation. if I had not liked it, I would have given away the Hammock to a befriended family with a garden and done with it. I did like it and it has become a valuable part of my equipment.
This knowledge is the base on which I can build, asking questions and gaining experience.
