For the past few years ive been a big fan of synthetic materials. Despite being slightly heavier, they tend to be cheaper and more friendly to my allergies. But now with all the new technology, there is hypoallergenic down and its getting more affordable. Now to the actually gear in question. Im looking at buying a wind resistant, packable, and lightweight vest. The products Ive been looking at are the Mammut Stratus Vest - synthetic, 10 oz, Mont Bell Therma Wrap - Synthetic, 5.5oz or the Mont Bell U.L Down Vest - Down (obviously) 5 oz. I like the down vest the most comfort wise, but Im a little skeptical of its wind "resistance" and how it would handle really damp weather. Aside from using it for most of my local hiking in vermont, whatever vest I choose will probably accompany me to the cloudforests in south america, where I have been a few times and it is always damp and usually windy and fairly cold. The Mammut feels the most durable and wind resistant, but I know this can be misleading. Has anyone here used any of these vest or their jacket counterparts? Id like a little insight before I drop the money on one. By the way, I know there are a lot of other ideas out there, but these 3 vest happen to be on sale at stores near me right now for about half off the msrp for each. Thanks!
