Out of curiosity, where doe ya'll get yer scales to weigh equipment?
I looked at a few online, but they seem to either have a really small range and are fairly expensive

Actually, my favorite is the free digital scale I got from Stamps.com, which measures in the tenths of a pound. For heavier items than it will hold, I got a food scale at Target, very cheaply.

Google on "electronic scales."
I found this (http://www.toplinedigitalscales.com) outfit. Cheap. Eg., $20 for a Sony scale that measures up to 250 grams with 0.1 gram resolution. Many variations & load sizes. (Eg. hanging scales to measure loaded pack, etc.)

For the final tally when the pack is full, I use a digital fish scale. Don't know where it came from as I asked for it for Christmas one year. Probably available anywhere that sells fishing gear.

Many outfitters have a scale in their store (usally in a backroom) that they will let their customers use free of charge to weigh their equipment. For example, Campmor allowed me to use their backroom scale when I purchased a new pack.
I usually weigh everything that I pack individually, at home first on a small inexpensive shipping/food scale (from WalMart), making a list of ecah item and its weight and keeping a running total. Then, I loaded the pack, took it down to Campmor, and weighed it loaded. My running total was fairly close to the "loaded" total I got @ the store.
I just wanted a way to double check the accuracy of my own weight measurements. Hope this helps.

You can also go to a post office for free, and use the lobby scales. some are electronic and count in tenths, too.

I have 2 scales... one is a digital "postal" scale I got real cheap off of ebay (theres hundreds there) and weighs to the 100th (0.00) ounce.
The second is a fish scale as posted above... $20 WalMart, has a large hook on the end, I hang my full pack on it before I walk out the door, just neat to know how much youre toting around!

The bathroom scale is the easiest and cheapest scale for me when it comes to final pack weight. Just weight yourself with the pack and then without the pack and do a little simple math.
Odds are you already have a bathroom scale. If it is a newer scale it is probably digital. Finally, odds are you can do the easy math in your head, if you we all at least have a calculator on the computer.

The scales in the mailroom at work. What Toddy Heyn said about the bathroom scale for overall pack weight, except I have to use my neighbor's because I don't have one.

A cooking scale that I got at a cooking store. It weighs up to 11 pounds in tenths of an ounce or in grams. There is no single thing that I will ever carry that weighs more than 11 pounds. It cost about 30 bucks.
I have a list of all my gear, and I weighed each item and wrote it down. Now I can add up what I want for a particular trip.

The wife and I have 3 different scales, all bought for other purposes. First is a mechanical postage scale that goes up to 3 pounds and is marked in ounces. It came from Staples or some other office supply store. Then I have two "fish" type scales. One goes to ten pounds and the other to 50 and if I remember correctly the smaller one is marked in ounce increments and the larger is marked in 1/4 pound increments. The two "fish" scales came from www.McMaster.com (http://www.McMaster.com)

For the full pack, I stand on the bathroom scale with my pack on, then without, and do the math.
For individual, smaller items I use a kitchen scale.

I bought a bathroom scale at Wally's. $5.95. The local Vet has a nice platform digital scale whic I throw the pack on when everything is finalized. for the $ I've given them, no problem.

I recently bought a Chefmate kitchen scale for $30 from Target. It goes up to five pounds, measures in .05 oz increments. You can also put it in grams, use it as a clock or timer if you'd like.
I go to the butchershop...afterwards I must fend off bears, dogs, and other misc animals...but heck, it's free!

I bought an electronic food scale at Wal Mart for about $30. Weighs in grams or up to 15 lbs in 1/8 oz increments.
Harbor Freight has a great digital fish scale for weighing your backpack. Twenty bucks. Can't go wrong.

Target store, in the cooking section, nice digital scale, goes down to 0.00 ounce and grams also. $25.00.
my local walmart sells two kinds of kitchen scales. one goes up to about a pound, in ounces. the other goes up to about 20 lbs, iirc, but doesn't have very accurate intermediate markings.
i've also used the post office. they have a public scale in the lobby that measures in 10ths of ounces. if you're shy, go on sunday. if you don't mind being stared at, go on saturday.
