View Full Version : Trail Days 2008 - request for theme ideas

Last year we posted a request on whiteblaze.net for theme ideas for Trail Days and got many good suggestions. We ended up accepting Miss Janet's suggestion "People are the Trail."

We again ask whiteblaze participants to send us ideas. You can send them to Tonya - damascusclerk@embarqmail.com We'll post this on a few other forums but whiteblaze is by far the most active and responsive. We've set December 1 as the deadline for these. After a theme is chosen, we will announce a logo contest here, with a $200 award for the winning design.

Pirate has suggested a theme which I personally like: "Toxic Camping," referring to the old chemical plant that used to exist on the current campground. He has suggested the logo could be "glowing hikers," with multi-colored hikers portrayed on banners and t-shirts. This suggestion is going to be hard to beat, but if others of you have ideas please let Tonya know.

Perhaps the theme should just be "The Appalachian Trail". Trail Days is on the cusp of becoming more like a county fair with beer than something that is supportive of the trail itself. A theme really isn't necessary unless it's the 100th anniversary or something. Or if a theme is considered necessary, how about "Leave No Trace" or something related to the Endangered Services Campaign?

Thanks, Tater. You make a good point about Trail Days getting away from its focus on the Appalachian Trail. If you have suggestions on how to change this, we welcome them. Many of us share your concerns.

Your theme ideas, and any others posted here, will be given to the Trail Days committee for consideration.

Hey Local
Its great to see that you are "involved " and trying to get Hikers to get involved again this year !!!!!!!! Thank you ! Thanks to the TDs Committee too!!!! Its nice you all are so open minded and encouraging the Hiker Community to be involved in YOUR towns MOST AWSOME TRAIL GATHERING of Hikers Past and present on the AT!!!!!!!!
As far as a theme...
How about ...
The AT...GET INVOLVED....DO SOMETHING TO GIVE BACK...to PRESERVE !!!
There is so much that people can do to get involved in when it comes to the AT.
Trail maintenance
Trail Preservation
Supporting Trail Clubs
and on a wider scale MOUNTAIN PRESERVATION (not just on the AT)
Something to do with the Preservation of the Trail for the FUTURE!
For our grandkids and theirs!

Something to encourage more folks to get "INVOLVED"
Perhaps invite groups like SAVE THE MTS. and others to set up information booths and gather signitures "THEY NEED" to fight "bad legislation" that is leading to the slow death of the Trail (and other Trails) as we know it!

It would be really cool if ALL the Trail Clubs set up an area to share info and needs they have too .

With all the Hikers that come to TDs ...
WHAT BETTER PLACE !

Just some thoughts to kick around ........

Thanks again for all you did last year and what you 're doing now !
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

PEACE!
Hopefully see ya in the spring !!!

I really like Sly's idea! This could be FUN!!! It wouldn't hurt to have a much more serious theme like Appalachian Tater's idea to use Trail Days to work on the Endangered Services Campaign... Maybe "Rocks, Roots, Reggae and RESPONSIBILITY!"

reggae has nothing to do with the AT. matter of fact rastafarians have a well known dislike for white folks

I agree with Wolf, what does reggae have to do with the trail? I much like the idea of Rocks, Roots and Responsibility much better. The idea of the trail orgs. disseminating information is a great idea. Hardcore could be represented as well as other trail worker groups. People could sign up for different trail maintenance teams that could go out after trail days and help do trail maintenance. T.D.'s has honored the maintainers, the hikers, and the people who help hikers. How about honoring the trail itself by emphasizing a push towards giving back to the trail.

I am going to post the same thing I posted last year:

I can get behind most of the suggestions on this thread, but just in case we can't reach a consensus, here are some surefire winners:

"We're all from Billville; some people just haven't realized it yet."
"Laurie Potteiger: Hottest ATC Employee!"
"Damascus Nopantscus!"

Seriously. "Damascus Nopantscus?" It's gold, baby, gold!

There are some good ideas here. We would like to have some more theme suggestions. Dec. 1 is the deadline for considering these.

There's a meeting of the Trail Days committee October 24, Town Hall, 7 p.m. The last meeting was a bit chaotic, so my apologies to Pirate and the Only Wanderer for the circus. We've got a situation where decisions are being made without a group discussion, and several volunteers have dropped out. It's a pain. Trail Days is run entirely by volunteers and when one or two people try to take control, volunteers leave. We hope we can fix this.

there's a lot of money to be made this year since the camping fees and increased vendor fees will happen. volunteers will have nothing to do with with the accounting of all that $$$ coming in. it's the hands of the town politicians. by design.

Great. I've been practising my stutter-step and have taken to pointing/poking people in the chest and saying "YOU!" in an overly friendly and/or combative tone. That, and pushups.

Anything else I should add to my Trail (Daze) training?

Shoot! Its the biggest "get together/Reunion" of AT Hikers past and present that I've ever seen!
With the towns openess for the Hiker community to get involved (such as this thread) OPEN TDs COMMITTEE Meetings to any who wish to attend ...
ITS ALL ABOUT HIKING!
IMO

If its not Hiker orientated enough than go give em some "serious input" to make it moreso!
Seriously !
Your presence/Opinions are needed cause its kinda sad that only 2 Hikers show up to represent the thousands .....
I'll buy ya a case of PBR if ya go!
:D

See ya in the spring
Hopefully.....

it ain't that simple. you don't understand the town politics. decisions are made by 2 or 3 local politicians regardless of how many hikers go to meetings

Local:

It would be great to have a "green" focus where recycling and stewardship of trail lands and trail relationships is focused on. Steps could be taken to minimize trash and print materials.

PS: By "green", I mean the environment, not the almighty dollar or green beer. ;)

I'm all about this years theme being Green, or LNT, or actually based on the forest and mountains. I"m just bad with slogans........"We and the trees" or something like that

Ok guys....go ahead, have your fun.......but I"m a treehuggin dirt worshiper, and that all she wrote :-)

That's what elected representatives are supposed to do, make decisions. If only they would make the right ones! In a place the size of Damascus, you could have a true Greek-style democracy.

Aw, man. I wanted to be the one who made a joke about that.

But seriously, I do appreciate what Local and the other volunteers do to bring Trail Days together.

Some more possible ideas:

"Party in Lone Wolf's Back Yard!" (figurative, and then possible literal, if we make sure he has no ammo)

"Damascus -- Your Cell Phone Doesn't Work Here, So Talk to the Person Next to You"

"All Together AT Damascus"

I found a spot near SunDog where my cell phone works. So maybe it should be "Damascus -- There is one place in town where you cell phone might work. See if you can find it"

On the sidewalk in front of the car wash and across from MRO are the 2 places that I've found.

I'm on Alltel. Supposedly Sprint works fine all over town.
