Please excuse the cross postings. :O

It is that time of the year again...time for the Rockies low key get
together! :)

There have always been Gatherings, Rucks, Kick Offs and Trail Days
on the East and West coasts.... many of us here in Rockies felt it
was time to do one in our neck of the mountains. In 2005, 2006 and
2007 we did! We typically have about 20-25 people.

The Ruck is a low key get together for those who enjoy the long
trails. Does not matter if you are thru-hiker, a section hiker, day
hiker or a dreamer...you just need to love the outdoors and the long
trails!

More info on what a Ruck is all about:

This year, we are again having the Ruck at the Leadville Hostel
(http://www.leadvillehostel.com (http://www.leadvillehostel.com/)) in Leadville, CO on Feb 29th - Mar 2nd.

The last weekend of February/ first weekend of March. (Leap year,
don't you know!)

Some of you CDTers/CTers and American Discovery Trail folks probably
know Wild Bill and Cathy from your stay at the hostel. They are
continuing to be one of the most friendly hostels owners on ANY trail.

As with previous years, the cost will be ~$60 for a bunk, shower, four
meals (2 dinners, 2 breakfasts). We'll do a potluck lunch on Saturday).
There are LIMITED amounts of private/couple rooms, so if you prefer a
room to a bunk, I suggest reserving early.

All reservations can be done at:
www.leadvillehostel.com (http://www.leadvillehostel.com)

You can also make reservations at:
(719) 486-9334

Tell Bill that it is for the ROCKIES RUCK. The hostel can accommodate
vegetarian needs. Pets are allowed. "Adult drinks" are allowed for
those who behave like adults. (Which means, I can drink my wine! :D)

The hostel itself has a HUGE TV for the slide shows, plenty of space
downstairs for gear stuff. If you are doing a trail, there are AT,
PCT, CDT and other trail veterans happy to answer any questions.

During the day, plenty of skiing/snowshoeing opportunities abound.
There is even a shop in Leadville that rents the equipment, too. For
anyone who enjoys alpine skiing, Ski Cooper is nearby at Tennesee
Pass. If you need supplies, Leadville has a Safeway.

(replace the AT with an @)

Also suggest going to the Yahoo Group set up for the ruck at:

2 dinners and 2 dinners? Hmm, what about lunches? I might have to start checking into airfares for this!

Yeah! Hey Mags, do you make pick up runs to the airport?

I meant say to breakfasts! :D

Doh!

As for airport runs...I think we can arrange something among the hiker trash community!

Using Cheaptickets, I found a flight for $375 (about the same for fuel if I drove RT) which is about a $100 more than if I wanted the flight in a month, but $300 less than if I was going tomorrow!

Have fun Mags!

Yea, I found $380 r/t from The Ham to Denver... I was saving my miles for my Vegas trip... but that is usually a cheap flight anyways... I'll keep checking, its a ways off yet!

I love Vegas, when are you going? Ocassionally I go to Biloxi. Should I pick you up along the way? :)

Denver, as a whole, is an $$$ airport. :(

If I made the Ruck in June it would probably beless expensive. But, I'd rather be hiking than organizing a hiker gathering. :)

Understandable. You'll all be there in sprit.

Weather permitting, BA and Footslogger will mkae it there too!

Well, thats 1/2 the problem too! I was looking at the last of Feb/1st of March... my best friend and I are celebrating momentous birthdays  next year and wanted to do it up big!

Shes not a hiker, dont think I can convince her to go to Colorado...:(

I usually go twice a year, stay at Treasure Island/mid-strip. Havent done a Biloxi trip yet, even tho is so close!

Biloxi is nice, but Katrina did a number on the historical homes along the strip and to a few of the casinos. They rebult most of the damaged casinos but not the homes. All that's left is empty lots. :(

But back to the subject at hand. If you've never been to Colorado and Leadville in particular, you're missing out. If not this time...

Oh, trust me, I dearly want to get to Colorado! I was there 10 years ago, for almost 3 weeks. Mags keeps pestering me about getting out there for some winter hiking/skiing/hut-to-hut trips... Im tryin'!!!

You betcha baby!! Thats the "good" kind of pestering!
I have been checking airfares for over a month now!! I think Ive been on the road and/or hiking more this year than Ive actually been at home. '08 is looking to start out the same way!

Since I mainly work in the Rockies these days.

People from outside the area, I suggest you make time to drive up to 4 hours west of Denver just to see the scenery. (Do it in the day, of course!)

Utah is different from CO, and worth a look as well; you can get a feel for it with just a 20-minute drive over the CO line.

Take a stop in Glenwoods Springs and dayhike the Storm King Memorial Trail.

If you get as far as Grand Junction, hit the Dragon Wall Chinese buffet. Decent sushi at LUNCH is hard to beat.

Hope to see lots of WBers there!
