I've been using a Smartwool Microlight tee, but was wondering if there was another shirt that is even lighter (and cheaper). I know it violates some ultralight philosophy, but I always carry 2 shirts. I use a microlight smartwool to hike in (and avoid bad odor!), and then a heavier old regular smartwool tee around camp. I'd like to replace the second, but was wondering what alternatives are out there and cheap. I'm sure I could do things like chop off the sleeves, but I'm not that self-confident!

I found some Visa Endurance shirts at Sierra Trading a couple of years ago cheap. They feel and wear like the underarmor stuff, very thin and cool, but they are much more durable, they don't pull like the underarmor stuff.

I'm not convinced that light tee shirts are even a good idea. It can feel cold at night even in the summer. A good heavy tee shirt might be just what you need.

The lightest upper body garment you're likely to find would be a running singlet, they usually weigh in at sub 3 oz.

Golite's Dri-Move Lite line is crazy light if you can still find the stuff around, but not terribly durable for a long distance hike. The compression tops from Under Armour are also very light, more durable and will provide very good warmth if you're using it as a designated dry/sleeping shirt.

Personally, I like hiking in polyester dress shirts from Goodwill, and sleeping in the same...
