When you don't have 'extra clothes' what do you wear when washing your clothes? I'd think raingear, but as I usually only bring a rainjacket... :-?

If you don't have *any* extra clothes, I guess you'd wear a smile ;->

Bring an extra pair of men's swim trunks to cover the nether regions while your rain jacket coves the top.

In decent weather, I usually just wear my hiking shorts in the shower with me, wash them out while I shower, then wear them dry while doing the rest of the laundry, rain jacket if needed.

This Dino has been known to wash clothes wearing a toga made from her tarp once (long story that even I won't tell on myself ). I've seen others wearing a tent fly toga - and one wearing a 'diaper' formed from a hammock - in laundromats near trails that are commonly thru-hiked. Personally, I would think a pair of nylon shorts or swim trunks that could be easily rinsed out in a sink and dried overnight would be a better choice.

That works for me, at least in hot weather. My nylon shorts dry in minutes.

Another option is to run 2 washes. Wash everything in the first was except what your wearing. The change into clean clothes and then wash the clothes you were wearing.

oops - a rain jacket would not adequately cover the junk in my truck - though many of the skinny youngsters wouldn't have this problem.

Like Lyle, I shower in a pair of dark blue (hides the dirt) nylon shorts, and wash the rest, the shorts dry in almost no time

I used to use a garbage bag torn at one end as a 'rain skirt'. This worked pretty well around the laundromat. I really like the idea of using a tarp as well.

I usually carry a second set of zip offs with a extra shortsleeve shirt. The zip offs can be used as short or long and if it is the same pants the legs are interchangable.
I will carry a 1 gallon zip lock bag and wash either in a laundry mat or in the bag with camp soap.I wear the second set of cloths whil the other is being washed / dried.

I got quite a few grins and giggles at a shelter on the Long Trail back in the '90s when I took some warm water and bio soap in the clearing out front, and took a "shower" or sponge bath in public. I merely washed and rinsed "myself" inside my nylon shorts before a long, hot day of hiking. I really didn't notice that anyone was looking. I thought I was the only one awake.:o

Many laundromats and hostels have a basket of clothes for people to wear while doing the laundry, other wise rain gear works well.

I agree. I always bring a pair of running shorts that I don't wear except for cases like these. They weigh nothing and serve this purpose well. Plus when you want to go to bed (in warm temps) they're perfect to sleep in.

keep in mind that most jurisdictions have a ordinance against nudity.

I assume that if someone found a hidden place in the woods somewhere unlikely to be seen, this would not be illegal, or at least not prosecuted.

So far, I don't think anyone has suggested walking around nude at the laundromat, or any other form of nudity.

Some of y'all who are suggesting more imaginative solutions like wearing a tent should really post pictures ;->

I thought I'd get some great responses and I haven't been disappointed! The rainjacket + tent/ garbage bag combo seems to make the best sense. I'm not going to bring any town or extra clothes, so I was mostly just curious to see what people did in places like laudromats. I've done the garbage bag/ rainjacket thing at Neels gap, but that is a hiker safehaven. I sometimes forget that I will stop caring about odd looks from strangers...but I will, it always happens after a couple days on trail!

theres was a sign in the Hot Springs Laundromat specifically telling people to wear something while washing clothes. no nudity allowed. which just says that someone actually did it at some point or another. lol

It says you can't just wear a towel. Someone did that in 2006 and prompted the sign.

If you don't get this, google "RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS The Abbey Road EP album cover" but don't say you weren't warned the band is wearing a sock and little else.

well, I have been looking for a trail name. Guess I'd have to live up to it by actually washing my clothes that way.
