This is Koa (Koh Wah) ... My new hiking partner soon as he grows up .. he's only 4 weeks old currently and is Akita/Pittbull with Black lab ... His mom is Akita/Pitt and his daddy is black lab/pitt ...
I trust you have plans to train the pup well, so that fellow hikers will not be intimidated by him.
Correct, as i have with all my dogs ... I have a 14 year old female pittbull who has never bothered a soul on the A.T ... and if i speak, she understands i'm the guy who feeds her ...
I have not heard of clicker training ... Just the basic, countless hours of work in the backyard with treats .. I'm not the biggest fan of dogs on the trail ... considering getting another one was hard ... He'll be a happy fella .. no worries.
"Dogs on the trail, meaning those who wake me up in the wee morning sniffin my tent cause there owner couldn't keep track of um" ... Really happened.. lol
Here's my pup Molly. She's a rat terrier, not quite a year old, but absolutely loves the trail!

I do know what you mean! I've met other beagles who almost never shut their mouths they're sounding off all the time, but my dog Journey is pretty darn quiet. The thing about him is that he's quiet about 99% of the time, but when he isn't quiet, he's VERY loud! I don't know how good of a backpacking dog he'd make because he has to stay on a leash all the time, he's not very good at withstanding the cold (hence the jacket...if you would have told me 3 years ago that I'd own a dog that I had to dress up I'd have laughed at you! Then I adopted the worlds thinnest skinned beagle!) And I'd worry that he'd keep everyone up at night yodeling at every little noise (He's used to sleeping in bed beside me, human style, with his head on a pillow and his body under the covers) BUT I'll tell you that that little dog has more personality in all 20 pounds of him that any other dog I've met, and that he's the best day hiking dog ever. He's going to be the hardest thing to leave when I start my thru hike next week....I miss him already!

Sadie has always been a trail dog (and rock climber) ever since she was old enough to go on a leash. She logs as many miles as I can handle every weekend and is learning to read trail signs. Look for us on the AT/GA section for her 1st birthday hike in October 09.

I have a 14 year old retired hiker, brindal american "pittbull" terrier .... She was the perfect dog, still trying to find myself a good hiking dog to train ... The white pittbull/akita mix i had posted died christmas eve before i picked him up .... They make amazingly loyal, and protective dogs when needed ... and very social to other animals and people when needed.
She knew the difference between passive people and those who ment to cause a problem.

This was actually two separate trips at the same park (Oak Mountain State Park, Pelham, AL) The pic with us on the rocks was at the top of the falls and she was about 4.5 months old. She loves the rocks and the water. The second was when she was just over 6 months old at the same park. We were scouting the backpack campsites where we will do some warm-up hiking/camping to prepare for our trip. We were out last month in an Alabama snow storm of 5+ inches and some heavy wind. Sadie thought it was just another toy to play with!
Thanks for posting such a great topic for happy dog pics!

Here's Precious (brindle-8yrs old) and Peanut (fawn-3yrs old) on a hike mid-February at American Legion State Forest. Precious was a rescue- loves people and children especially but hates other animals (think KILL). I found out by accident after I played with a puppy and came home smelling like it that she likes puppies though. So we were able to get Peanut as a 12wk old pup and Precious accepted her.
Precious adores the woods, absolutely adores it. But she's getting up there in boxer years and has slowed way down and has a bad hip. I suspect this may be her last spring/summer. Peanut will just be lost without her. We're already planning on adopting another rescue dog. I want an English Bulldog, hubby wants a mastiff.
Peanut turns three in just a couple weeks. And I've finally made her spay appointment. She is a purebred and with certified hips and heart and I wanted to let her full adult personality emerge before deciding whether or not to breed her (and let me tell you the rows THAT philosophy caused between me an the vet techs at my vet's office! ). But it turns out that although physically she's healthy, her personality just shouldn't be reproduced. She tends to be timid and she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Neither trait that needs to passed along to future generations. So in for a spay she goes, I want to get it out of the way before the really good hiking/swimming weather hits. She loves being in the water.

She is loads of fun on the trail, gets along with everyone... sometimes converts haters. I have never done a thru with her but have done two 150 mile sections, plus a ton of shorts. Biggest problems I've had so far are 1) ticks (she has a lot of fur and they can be hard to spot), 2) an isolated incident with a snake that resulted in a small bite and a very scared puppy, but no real harm done to either animal:)
I try to be as responsible as I can for the sake of other hikers and also very careful to keep her safe and comfortable... she makes me very happy and I can't imagine hiking without her!
Finally picked a name for the girly, Introducing Dasy

"Trail Angel" is a fair weather pup. Hates getting too hot, doesn't want to get wet, and has to be toted when he gets tired! But, he loves the occasional over-nighter, meeting new people, and having the wind in his ears. I would hate to meet a snake tho, so now that summer is closing in and we hike in "snake country" he's staying safe at home!

Awww Superman...sry your dog passed! Great that you buried her in her favorite spot.
I had a golden retriever, Strider, growing up that was my best friend (hiked/camped with me, swam with me, pulled my sled) and when he died, we had him cremated. I carried his ashes with me for 15 years as I moved to 5 different states and one foreign country. Finally last summer, my son and I drove back to where I grew up and released Strider's ashes into the creek where we always used to swim together 25+ years ago.

Jesus. That hit home. It's amazing how much a dog can effect you. My family got our first dog when I was 8. He was the runt of the litter but grew to be a 105 lbs. labrador (and this was when he was in shape!). He passed away in the spring of 2002 at the age of 13. My dad's a surgeon so he put in an IV at home and administered the poison himself. Seven years later, he still cries about him every time he comes up at dinner. I had to euthanize the first dog I had as an adult a couple of years ago and I was a mess for a long time. Took him out to our local dog park, got him some Mickey D's (his favorite) and took him to the vet's.
I'm sure your boy had a wonderful life. Remember the good times.
I'm attaching a pic of the guys I've lost over the years.

A Dogs Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the worlds sweetest music, as you must know by the wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the priviledge of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though you had no home, I would follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I can not tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and be willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And my beloved master, should the great master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest-and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your loving hands.

My dog Tonka loves to hike, but sleeping in the tent is what he looks forward to each evening. He usually goes when the weather is cooler as the heat is hard on a dog.

Aye, indeed he is! If there is a rock overhanging the trail, he likes to run up on the rock and watch me as I walk the trail below him; it's one of his favorite hobbies. :D
I was thinking today that Phoebe is coming up on her 8th birthday.... makes me reflect on good times! These are not very good pics - I took them in my pre-digital camera days, and they are low-res scanned images - but two of my favorite memories with her!

Why don't we have a gallery option for this? for gods sake they have a category for freaking mice! We the dog lovers of WB should ask to have a sub category set up for or friends that hike more miles than some of the folks that post on here all the time.
I sent a PM to ATroll and goT zero response. It needs to become a movement. Imagine if five people a day walked in hummed a bar of Alice's restaurant and walked out. Well folks it would be a movement.... oh sorry got side tracked. Send your requests as well.

Thanks, she is a heinz 57 w/ a lot of rottie (i think rotties do make good hiking dogs, they were bread for long endurance and hauling loads, the guard part was introduced later in the breed)
she loves to hike and has gone around 250miles with me, she was well trained when i adopted her and she turned out to be a good traildog
And yes, i think the backpack may be her favorite part.

I don't have a good picture handy, but I do have a anecdote I would like to share. The first time we took our dog up to Table Rock in SC he hiked up the whole way without raising his back leg a single time. Once we got to the top he immediately marked the summit sign like there was no tomorrow. He had never been there before, but somehow he knew what he was doing.

They named her Tora and we decided to keep the name so there's one less thing for her to have to learn.

She's good though because when I go to bed, she settles down nice until I get up :) Her previous owners didn't socialize her much so we've been putting a lot of work into that lately and plan on putting a lot more on before the hike. She isn't aggresive, but shy.

Hey Chaplain, Cooper is an English Pointer, aka, birddog. He's almost 8 months old now and just a tick under 50lbs. I have a pack for him but I haven't really loaded it up with anything because he isn't done growing yet. He likes the pack and it doesn't slow him down. Not sure what your comment about the jack russell is about, but i have been told that Cooper is like a jack russell on steroids. Seriously, the dog is a machine. I take him mountain biking and I wear out before he does.

I pretty much have decided it would be to hard on a dog. So . . . I may change my mind. But I doubt it. The photos sure are terrific. Wow, what a collection of neat dog photos. Awesome pup! I frakn love catahoulas. We have a 5 yr old catahoula named Ziggy and he is great. Unfortunately he is a tad too aggressive for the trail. That's where my 2 yr old black lab comes in.

Meet Bear, a year round hiker, hes the only one that will wait for my slow arse. If i take too long a break, he will come back down the trail looking for me. Here he is, came back looking for me:

The first is a photo of my two men on Park Point, Duluth MN. Ryley is a red-headed Siberian who has endless energy and knack for truely appreciating nature. Dan is a red-headed Human who I tends to enjoy the greater indoors over the greater north. I am in the second photo with Ryley in the front yard garden, this was taken just moments before Ryley decided the yard needed a landscaping job and tore up the entire lawn.
I like to say that Ryley takes after his father in looks and me in attitude.
I have not really introduced myself yet and since this is a photo thread, I thought this would be a great place to start.
Quick Bio:
My name is Tierney, I am a twenty year old female student at NDSU who is majoring in Zoology, Anthropology and English. I am very active and enjoy being outdoors in all seasons. I just ended my truck insurance and instead I am riding a bike everywhere. I must say, winter biking in Fargo is a blast! I am currently looking to adopt a second husky but I am undecided on a couple of factors, mainly WHEN I should make that commitment. My dog and I are training for a marathon for next fall and a hike from Fargo, ND to Duluth, MN (taking the North Country Scenic Trail) this summer. I am hoping that the hike will give me an idea of how well my dog and I will do on a thru-hike.
My biggest challenge is figuring out how I can make a thru-hike enjoyable and safe for me and my dog. A very real possibility is attempting the hike with two dogs since I enjoy a challenge but I will have an idea of how possible that is after a couple cross-state hikes.

This is a great thread:) So many awesome animals here, the dog with the headband is very funny! A lot of these I think would be good entrants in the Energizer Ultimate Photo Contest that National Geographic is running in their magazine.
The company I work for recently picked up the marketing for the campaign which is very nice considering I am a amateur photographer and a hiker. The contest gives photographers an opportunity to get pictures published in National Geographic magazine as well as earn a trip to the scenic and VERY photographic Galapagos Islands.
Just send in your best photos for a chance to win. A link for how to enter with some previous years entrants is below.

the pic on pp1 of your dog shows a kabar mk2 piolets knife. not to be off topic, but in trying to afford a hike and a dog im selling my kabar. it is the most valuable thing i havent turned into food yet and my last sellable possesion. it is considered by most, including appraisers at freemans auction house as well as sotherbees and christies, to be the holy grail of kabars. only known example is its designation. it also is designated, unique, and , none other on ebay. thats actually a rateing we in the kabar collecting world use . its merits include it being:
an mk2 see bees knife
haveing an arangement of red spacers in the handle unknown in any other
being the first design approved for military contracts ever
being marked on one side, union cutlery co reg us pat off. and kabar olean ny on other.
being bloodstained and containing fleash in the hilt.
haveing shrapnal in the handle
haveing a blade sharpened only once
haveing been ground to allow penetration of thick uniforms by its user
haveing the strong possibility of haveing provanonce(with reaserch)
and much more.
point is, if i sell it, i might be able to get a dog and hike. its worth alot. the kabar museum wants it but will only give a tax credit for it. witch im gonna do, but would rather not. want it?

I'm not sure. She's a purebred animal shelter mutt. I call her the Frankenstein dog, because she looks like she was made out of spare parts. Here's another picture showing her body. Pretty sure there's some Beagle in there, as well as Bassett or Corgi (short legs).
She can hike, though. We'll put in 11 hr days in the summer, and she's right there with me.

Here's Manny (2 yr old, recently adopted 90 lb part choc lab, part bear, part draft horse ;)) and Bella (1 year old 30 lb sheltie). This was this morning in the backyard. They're a bit too wild yet for the trail, Manny wasn't well trained before we adopted him, and Bella is still learning - as in we're gaining on breaking the herding / circling instinct. I need to get them better at walking with me rather than taking me for walks. Manny thinks he's a draft horse and Bella herds everything - including cats (yes, it actually can be done).

Manny is 2 years, 3 months old, 90 lbs. They said he's a Chocolate Lab, but he's as strong as a draft horse. He stands about 26" at the shoulder. He's a big, BIG baby. We adopted him in April. His former owners (military couple) gave him back to his breeder due to divorcing and deployment, so we took him in. He's having some hind leg and hip issues already (sigh). Could just be stiff from a leg operation he had as a puppy but we're getting it checked out Friday. It's gotten worse as it's gotten colder. He eats about 3 1/2 cups per day of low-fat chicken meal based kibble per day. I'm getting a pack for him - trying to find a used Ruffwear that fits. I got two here on WB. The smaller one fit the Sheltie perfectly, but the medium wouldn't fit him, so I'll sell it and keep looking for a large one.
The little Sheltie behind him is Bella. She's just over a year old, weighs 29 lbs., and is about 16" at the shoulder. She's the one who herds the cats - and anything else that moves. She already can run / hike 20 miles a day, it's just all in a 10 foot circle. ;) Like many Shelties, she can be a bit of a nutcase at times. What's nice is that when I put the pack on her, she really settles down. I've only had it on here a few ties but it is promising.

He was being trained to help locate the buried AT Boundary Markers. This was taken on the Boundary near the summit of Mt Cube in New Hampshire last summer.
Sadly he was stricken by LP (laryngeal Paralysis) about two months later and even with major throat operations he still passed away in August.
The boundary markers are often buried by forest duff as deep as two feet and are very hard to locate at times.

Bear, as far as we know (rescued dog) is part Golden Retriever and part Border Collie . High energy and aggressive.
He has more herding instincts than birding instincts though.
