I was in SNP last Saturday when there was 2-4" of snow on the ridge and the fog never lifted. Weatherwise, you need to be prepared for anything.

Re. the visitor facilities, only Big Meadows and Skyland are open for meals & lodging. Loft Mt, Lewis Mt., Elk Wallow are all closed.

The highest point in the Southern District is HighTop Mountain. You come to a shelter beforehand (HighTop Hut) but if you want to camp on a mountaintop with great sunset views, continue on to HighTop Mountain. You don't need to bring water uphill because there's a good spring on top whose water was flush when I was there Saturday and there's many flat area for tenting or trees for hammocking.

Have a good hike.:)
