Hi everyone…

The PA Ruck is right around the corner from us: January 25th-27th, 2008 at Ironmasters Hostel at Pine Grove Furnace State Park PA. It is being held one week after the Southern Ruck. Some folks are driving straight up from this SoRuck to attend the PA Ruck.

The PA Ruck webpage can be accessed here:

http://www.whiteblaze.net/paruck/

It will be updated frequently.

I’d like to thank ATTroll for hosting the PA Ruck on Whiteblaze.net !!! Sly played a major role in the ftp process – I couldn’t have done it without him.

You can access an interactive Google spreadsheet (thanks Sly) from the PA Ruck site, noting your food donations, presentation, volunteer clean-up or anything you’d like to bring or add. Please feel free to visit the spreadsheet as often as you’d like and make any changes necessary, making sure you click edit, then save your work after your entry.

Bag O’Tricks will be my right-hand man this year in charge of volunteer clean-up recruiting. The spreadsheet is available for this purpose and to make this task as simple as possible. Thanks Tricks!

A major thank you to Chris Bagby “Spur” for his generosity in hosting the previous PA Ruck website.

Thanks to Jim and Ginny!

**Thanks again Sly**:banana

I may be able to combine a trip to the Ruck with a visit to friends that I hope to do in January. Never been to any Rucks, Gatherings, or Hangs - looking forward to making one!

Any interest in veiwing some slides from Hikanation? This was the cross-country hike sponsored by AHS and Dept. of Interior back in 1980-81. Was the precursor to the ADT. Have some I could bring if there is any interest. They are old, would probably be good for a laugh seeing some of the monster packs we used to carry. Let me know if any interest, no hard feelings or disappointment if not :-)

It is a combination for Friday night. We usually have a speaker first, then the slideshow presentations.

Looking for live music in the common room if anyone is interested. Takoma Tedd could possibly surprise us -- and has, but his drive up to PA is a long one.

There's a beautiful grand piano in the main common room if anyone would like to perform for all to enjoy...please feel free.

I put you in for an 8:45 p.m. Friday night presentation - is this okay? Would this be on the Appalachian Trail?

You can click HERE (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pFUZvpAQRNQDXJYkFg7-nZA) to view the PA Ruck's Google interactive spreadsheet.

Once you get to the site, click on: edit this page (center, right), once you're in the spreadsheet area, you'll see 6 different spreadsheets on the bottom. Feel free to fill in any of the spreadsheets at this time, then click SAVE AND CLOSE top right.

Welcome and thanks ! :sun

Pootz - There is no video equipment at the hostel in PA. You'll need to bring your own or borrow it. There used to be a TV, with a dvd player, but I'm not sure if it's still there. Steve used to bring a large screen, but I'm not sure whether he's doing that again this year. If Spur is doing a show, he might have equipment.

I'm looking forward to your slideshow.

Thinking about attending -- a group newbie, but not a hiking newbie.

Is the state park OK with sleeping in vehicles at the campground? I have a winter bag, but winter skills are rusty and the only tent I would have confidence in is very big (wouldn't warm it up).

Unless things have changed, no need to stay at the campground in your vehicle, others have slept in the parking lot of the hostel

Here are my questions about the Pa-Ruck:

1. Does a lot of drinking happen?

2. Does a lot of illegal substance use happen?

3. Does this event focus on socializing or things like presentations, hiking, information, etc?

Thanks in advance,
Kirby

Yes there is always room at the hostel, you can however phone ahead and reserve your bed.

We definitely have a DVD projector and screen if Sly is unable to attend. :(

ATrain: by all means bring photos, slideshow(s) or whatever you have. Some of us just bring our photo albums and leave them laying around the hostel for all to enjoy.

If you are planning to stay at the campground, bring firewood. It's been as low as zero degrees, yet one year it was 40 at night.

Welcome all - thru-hikers, sectioners, non-hikers, families, curious. Don't be shy!!!!

Make sure y'all jump in on the potluck-and if you don't want to use the Google spreadsheet (link on the below PA Ruck site) just email & tell me what you'd like to bring: ATrailHiker@hotmail.com or PM me here.

Previous year(s) thru-hikers: We would like to hear you speak at our thru-hiker bull session.

Volunteer musicians wanted - acoustic, piano for small jam sessions in the common room :banana

Bring your stoves for the stove display (especially new or vintage). We did this last year and it was fun. The StarLyte stove will be there. Display tags available.

Glad you're attending Drive-By. Bring that hand, we can always use another one :D

I am bringing one of Earl's pith helmets :sun

Looking forward to it all. :welcome

Hanging out with hikers is worth the drive. There aren't a lot of people out there who really know what it is to do a long distance hike. Hiker gatherings give you a chance to hang with people who really do get it. Most have either walked the walk already or intend to. The others just enjoy spending time with hiker trash. It's a lot of fun.

How thoughtful - thank you!

You can also drop off anything at the hostel ahead of the Ruck. Donna "usually" opens the door at 4:00 p.m., but if you phone her she'll greet you at any time: 717-486-7575 If she doesn't answer, leave a message with the time you'll phone back. She's there, it's a very large hostel and it might take her a while to get to that phone.

Had to make some last minute schedule changes here. Looks like I will make it for the entire weekend. I will bring the HikaNation slides and any old equipment I can find, I know a lot of it has disappeared over the years.

The slides will probably take about an hour. Not really a formal slide show so can be shortened or lengthened depending on the number of stories told. Schedule me any time that works for you. Should be a fun weekend.

When you click onto the link to the Google Spreadsheet -it will read your cookies. IF YOU HAVE A GOOGLE/GMAIL account, it will sign you in under your name and NOT the PA Ruck's sign in either.

You start looking for the spreadsheet, confused, lost, agitated, and people finally give up. Don't give up please.

So....

Speaking of Boston stations, what frost me (no pun intended) is I was listening to the Pats pregame show online BCN, a couple weeks ago, and as soon as the game started they went to music. I couldn't find the game anywhere!

Hello friends...

The interactive Google spreadsheet hasn't interested many of you, most are having a hard time or just don’t want to be bothered, I understand, so I’ll mention what we need for the PA RUCK and you can decide what you are able to bring.

You can respond here, or privately email me, but respond so I know please. Your food donations to the PA Ruck are important.

What we NEED:

FRIDAY NIGHT:
7 more boxes of pasta
10 jars of sauce - meat and veg
Your meat ideas - sausages, meatballs
Breads
Salad fixins
Parmesan/shaker cheese
desserts
Please note: If you're bringing pasta, uncooked meats, sauce for this dinner, we will need these items no later than 4:00-5:00 p.m.

SATURDAY LUNCH soup benefit for the hostel:

Precooked soups, chilies, stews for the soup benefit, meat and veg
Lunch trays - bring it on, someone will construct a tray for you
Breads, crackers
your ideas

You can bring your soups in your own crock pot. Bring an extension cord. We always have fun together in the kitchen heating everything up for the soup benefit but MAKE NOTE that we have to start the soup warm-up process around 10:30-11:00 a.m. and no later. If you are constructing the soup, would you kindly start that early Saturday morning ? Thanks! We welcome any donations!

This is cash donation meal that will benefit the hostel. They allow us to have this event at the hostel, we'd like to show our appreciation with cash donations, so the soup benefit is important to the hostel.

SATURDAY night RUCKFEAST:
Everything is needed

RuckFeast ideas are: Hams, turkeys, chickens, sausages, beef, ribs, corned beef, stews, casseroles, ethnic dishes, game, falafel, vegetarian dishes, bbq dishes, mac n cheese, potato dishes, salads, breads and the desserts!

If you are not capable of cooking, please bring me your uncooked items on Friday and we will cook them accordingly Saturday afternoon for the Saturday evening RuckFeast.

If you are cooking in the kitchen for the RuckFeast, please note we have limited space. We welcome your ideas and your presence in the hostel kitchen at any time. We keep the coffee and the fellowship going on in the kitchen.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Everything is needed
(coffee, creamer, sugar, paper cups, paper plates, paper BOWLS, some utensils, napkins, paper towels, trash bags, foil, wrap, your ideas)

Presentations for Friday & Saturday are looking good, we have a full line-up but there’s still room. We love variety. There will be a DVD projector, laptop, speakers and viewing screen in the upstairs common room. Should there be too many of us to fit in that room, we can relocate the audience downstairs.

A Ruckster is working on Saturday breakfast, should anyone care to donate food or help I’m sure it will be appreciated. As soon as I hear more info, we'll post it here ( or she will ). Breakfast must be presented and cleaned up no later than 10:00 a.m. due to the schedule. You can start as early as you like. Breakfast is usually on-yer-own, but this year someone wants to organize one, and we love that. Please consider the hike to Pole Steeple at 9am.

The stove display we had last year has grown into a VINTAGE GEAR DISPLAY so bring what you have for others to gawk at. Stoves are especially welcome for us stoveheads. We'll have ID tags/labels for your display item(s).

The Hiker Garage Sale will also take place...bring anything to donate to benefit the hostel. These items go placed next to the staircase; there will be a jar there for donations - thanks for anything you can bring! Ideas are anything hiking related....gear, clothing, accessories, packs, shoes, dehydrator, packaged foods, etc. The donations go directly to the hostel.

These events will take place at the PA Ruck:
Friday & Saturday evening presentations, slideshows. Saturday morning hike to Pole Steeple at 9:00 a.m sharp. Afterwards, there is the soup benefit. We all stand in line, donate cash to the hostel and eat great soups and dishes cooked by volunteers. Followed by the "Tuckerization", and a ThruHiker bull session. Bring your pack ready-to-hike. Hikers are welcome to share their ideas and stories for the the bull session!

Saturday RuckFeast will be at 6:00 p.m. prompt due to the presentations scheduled for that night.

If you are capable of bringing wood for a campfire, please leave the wood at CAMPSITE #68: Gary Roberts and BagOTricks' site. You can also drop off the wood ahead of time within ONE WEEK of the event, just leave a note on it at campsite 68 that it is for the PA Ruck. Your wood donation is VERY MUCH appreciated. Bring your chair and trail stories.

For anyone that has never been to the PA Ruck, consider yourself welcome. You do not have to be invited. You can email me privately with any questions or post them here. We encourage you and your family/friends to attend and meet fellow hikers, dreamers, thru hikers, triple crowners and the best group of people I have ever met. We have a wonderful time, and I wish it lasted longer than just for the weekend.

This year several musicians are bringing their instruments for jam sessions in the main common room-so don't be surprised at anytime throughout the day or night they entertain us. If you'd like to join, bring your instrument. We're looking for pianists-there is a grand piano on the premises. Welcome amateurs and professional musicians.

Thank you!

Starlyte, sorry if this was already posted, but what is the status on rooms avaliable @ the hostel. Also, if camping out are there restrooms near the tent sites?

Campsites are plenty! Here's a map of the campsites: CLICK HERE (http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/pinegrovefurnace/pinegrovefurnace_camp.pdf). Keep in mind that the big bonfire is at campsite #68.

Many bunks available - keep in mind this is a hostel, a very nice, clean hostel. These are bunks. The hostel is HUGE. Even when the Ruck is packed with people, there are always more bunks available. There are also other rooms kept readily available should there be many attendees.

The hostel is closed until January 20th. However, some folks have phoned the hostel, left a message and Donna, the caretaker, has returned their calls.

The hostel accepts ATM/debit, VISA, MC, and good ol CASH.

Welcome :sun

will anyone else be coming up on Thu nite?
if YES, where would u be staying? ( I would like to get together with some other hikers that nite )
and if are in the area, would u be interested in either dayhiking on Friday or giving me a ride out 10 to 15 miles from the hostel to hike back? Please PM or email me if u are interested in getting together Thu nite or the Friday dayhike or Friday ride!!

Does the campground still allow multiple tents per site? Three of us will be coming down without reservations, and will be looking to share a site/sites (we don't all have to be together). Is there a good way to set this up, or just show up and wander around and ask?

good question....

Pine Grove Park will allow:

1 tent no larger than 8x8, 1 additional tent
1 tent larger than 8x8, 2nd tent no larger than a pup tent

5 person maximum per site UNLESS it is a family, they will not break up mom, dad and children.
per website (http://www.pa.reserveworld.com/cancel.aspx): "Occupancy: Site occupancy is limited to one family unit (persons living under one household) or one non-family unit limited to five persons per site, including one responsible individual 18 years of age or older."

directions from the main road which would be Rt. 233:
From Park Office continue on Route 233 south and turn left onto the Bendersville Road (1st road to your left). You will pass the park store on your right. Continue up the road and you will pass the Group Tenting area on your left. The family camping area is just past there on your right. This is a one way loop through the camping area. The second lane is the entrance to the camping area.

There are also firewood restrictions (wood brought in from out of state) so please read the website.

You will definitely want to bring firewood this time of year. There will be other PA Rucksters camping.

1 - 1 lb canister of hot cocoa mix
Cabbage Slaw for Saturday evening
2 boxes of saltines and 1- 12 oz bag of oyster crackers
1 - 12 oz package of fully cooked smoked chorizo & 1 - 12 oz package of fully cooked smoked andouille for Saturday breakfast

2 finger desserts/snacks - potato candy and a candied chex mix/dried fruit/m&m's if I can find the recipe. Which I hope I do....because I have all of the ingredients!!!!

I also have the ingredients for 2 fillings ( or stuffing depending on what you call it). One is a raspberry/bread filling meant to go inside a pork loin. 1 - 12 oz package of fully cooked smoked chorizo & 1 - 12 oz package of fully cooked smoked andouille for Saturday breakfast
An appetizer for any meal needed - crab, shrimp, red onion spread on pumpernickel bread

The other is a somewhat (somewhat meaning I am going to use bagels, english muffins & corn loaf bread instead of just the normal bread cubes) traditional bread filling that would normally go in a turkey. I need to know from you Marsha if you still need meats. I have a turkey in the freezer that I need to know if I should get out and bring. And/or if you want the pork loin too. I can do both if needed. I did not purchase the pork loin yet till I hear from you. I need to know soon to get the turkey out to thaw if you want that.

The filling/stuffing can be two additional sides if we don't want the filling in the meat. Just let me know.

Please pass the word on to the ruckster doing Saturday breakfast what I am bringing for that.

Love ya!

thank you muchly for your contribution to the breakfast...chorizo is wonderful!

Funny how I tried to avoid flooding this thread with the grocery list, but here we are

Your interests and efforts are extremely appreciated and welcome. Not too many folks will get up and cook like that on Saturday mornings at the Ruck; many of us are just too dang tired from the over-stimulation the night before

Thank you so much!

Musicians - where are you? Email me, amateurs or rock stars....Takoma Tedd I doubt will be attending considering he lives in FL and Moonbow John is not attending and he is an excellent and versatile musician.

Bring your stoves and vintage gear for a display at the PA Ruck. We'll have labels.

Hiker's Garage Sale: Have anything you'd like to donate? Bring yer stuff, throw it behind the main staircase and pick thru anything you'd like, just make a donation in the hostel jar. Don't be cheap either ;)

Firewood. Bring what you have, cardboard helps too for firestarters. Unless you have your own campfire, put your stack on campsite 68. If you do that before Thursday evening, leave a note on the stack: PA RUCK WOOD

The only thing that would make my Ruck complete is if Lone Wolf, Sly and Baltimore Jack would attend :banana

Thanks everyone.

Tricks wants to know if anyone can bring a saw or better yet a chain saw. It would be for cutting wood.

We are need of wood - desperately. Usually by now some kind soul drops off fire wood at campsite 68. No one has-unless it's a surprise, won't know until tomorrow.

Thanks.

I will bring a saw and a maul. We may not be allowed to use a chain saw in a state park.

oh...and is anyone looking for a bunk in the hostel?
one of the ladies coming with me had reserved one, but i'm thinking i'd rather stay in the camp if i can get someone to take my bunk.
or can i just call and un-reserve? how would that work?

Gary Roberts will be at campsite #68, arriving Thursday evening between 6-8, he's coming from Rockland MD. No one else has mentioned coming in early yet.
Looks like I am wusing out on the Thu nite campout; will arrive Fri morn after a leisurely drive up from Richmond...

Hope all is well in PA and the normal Ruck w/e snowfall does not arrive
and also
can't wait to start conversating w/ "the mayor of Billville" concerning his PCT08 hike. Actually someone should start a thread concerning/entitled "PCT08 advice for Shane".....

Hey everyone….thanks for an awesome PA Ruck…..

We had 102 in attendance.

So many people volunteered their time and donated food and supplies…I just couldn’t believe it. Saturday night RuckFeast looked like a Las Vegas buffet. The items people donated !

It was a different Ruck – new faces, we love it.

The campfire was incredible. Biggest one yet! Saturday night it roared…or was that the leaf blower…anyways it roared- DriveBy you are incredible :D

Can’t wait to post the pictures later on today!

Special deserving thanks to….Turtlefast and wife for the donation of the beautiful PA Ruck banner which I’ll post pics of as well and for the cases of soda, Scott from the Ye Olde Backpacker who donated many hiking shirts (this was a first!), Skeeter-Pokey-Lyle-Pootz-Jim & Ginny-Weathercarrot for their presentations, Sally Naser from the ATC, Bone Lady and entourage from Cleveland that hosted Saturday breakfast, Fannypack for all of his work and contributions, Stonewall for bringing his turkey cooker and time that he spent cooking these–wow, ladies from the Women Hiker’s list, and: Trail Angel Mary for the many food items she brought, cooked, set up and for the TOTAL entertainment she and her vehicle provided for us (pictures and story later).

So many people to thank individually…thank you so much!

The hostel has new caretakers that we met on Saturday night, we’ll post more about them in the new few weeks – we were so happy to meet such high spirited and enthusiastic folks.

(I hope someone can get the videos from the Saturday campfire on the Internet)

Also THANKS to Starlyte for her never-ending efforts the entire weekend and I also want to make sure that FELIX is mentioned for his dishwashing efforts on both Friday & Saturday nite. Also thanks to Tricks for his patience at Walmart on Friday while he was shopping for Starlyte's macroni casserole ingredients.

Btw, Felix should be hiking now somewhere between Great Barrington & RPH Cabin. If u see a pickup truck with Indiana tags check to see if it is Felix and leave him a message on the windshield.... He may near a shuttle to spot his truck so he can hike SOUTH to it. For those who don't know Felix is a SOBOer all the way (ME2GA98).

See yall on the trail.

I agree Fannypack...

reason why I didn't mention Tricks or Felix is because they don't read/contribute any posts here on Whiteblaze unless I send them the link...but YES they are important people to thank!

(poor Tricks...he had a hard time with the grocery list?...I'll make it up to him at the Warmer)

Felix usually plans a nice hike after the Ruck...he'll post a mini-trip report on the AT-L.

Thanks again Fannypack - it was great seeing you, don't get to spend much time with you.
