I'd suggest you visit two forums for info about current trends in hammocking:
Hammock Forums (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/index.php)and Hiking HQ (http://hikinghq.net/forum/?)

The history of hammock use (http://www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/hammock.htm)

Briefly, the advantages of hammock camping are:
Sleeping in a hammock is generally more comfortable than sleeping on the ground
Using a hammock means you do not have to find a flat spot to camp
Many like to camp away from others and as inconspicuously as possible. It is easier to do this in a hammock than a tent
Some feel that hammocks do less environmental damage than tents because the structure does not disturb vegetation on the ground.

The disadvantages:
Since one is hanging in mid-air in a hammock, it is harder to stay warm
Since a hammock is fairly small, one can only keep a limited amount of personal property inside. Systems exist for keeping packs safe and dry, but it requires more thought and skill than doing this in a tent.

Also study the hammock forum archives on this site.... the issues are the same for most over the years.... these are the "pioneering" archives.

Then update on hammockforums.net

As I vaguely recall, it was an invention by the indigenous natives of the American hemisphere, either south or central. The Spaniards, when they first encountered the natives sleeping comfortably under the jungle canopy in those weird and peculiar contraptions immediately recognized it as an immediate asset for sleeping in the slow, cumbersome sailing ships of the day where sailors slept in shifts upon the small available floor space. It increased the comfort of those Atlantic and Pacific crossings tremendously, almost immediately.
