What have you found the best way to get home from Baxter ?

Do you recommend a specific shuttle to the airport or bus (I heard there is a bus stop in Medway) ? Do not really want to hitch if I can help it.

Also - best place to stay to hang out a couple days in Millinocket ?

Thanks

Stay at the Appalachian Trail Lodge or Pamola Motor Lodge. Get a bus from Medway to Bangor. There's an airport there. Or catch the bus to Boston for a train, bus, or plane to your home.

Adequately described in Wingfoot, and I assume in ALDHA Companion. Don't worry about it.

Getting from Baxter State Park to Millinocket is an easy hitch because nearly everyone who is leaving BSP is going to Millinocket anyway. As already stated, the AT Lodge is a good place to hang out for a couple of days before heading home. If you are flying home, I would suggest flying out of Portland or Boston and not Bangor. Ticket prices out of Bangor are very expensive; therefore, I would take a bus to Portland or Boston for better prices and more choices. Have a good hike:)

Another option I have mentioned in the past is take the bus to Portland and take Amtrak from there. The only hassle is that Amtrak goes to North Station and the majority of the the other Amtrak trains leave south station.

Ditto on the flights out of Bangor, they are very expensive with limited connections.

True, but it is quite simple to take the T from south station to north station to connect.

It's one hour from Medway to Bangor (Concord Trailways bus station) then 2 hours to Portland

Dont know how much experiance you have with hitching but by the time you get to maine the short hop from Baxter to Millinocket and Millinocket to Medway will be a regular thing. I have seen AT hikers that hitch becuase the bus schedule didn't fit into their plans.

Don't know where you are in NC but for something with an unpredictable date for travel, amtrak is the best bet for price. Hitch to Medway, Bus to Portland, Train to Boston, Subway across town Boston, Reigional Train to somwhere on the Crecent Route (NY, DC), Take the Crecent to NC.

Actually you can get a bus from Boston to No. Car. area for about $150. There is no way the train can compete price wise. THe train is at least three times more expensive.

I went from Rutland, VT to Clemson, SC last summer for about 150 bucks (I think it was 156 if I remember correctly). The bus isn't bad if you can buy an advance ticket, but amtrak prices don't usually change based on how far you buy in advance, not to mention that it is a much nicer trip.

Wow, you were right. I was waaay off and now I'm trying to figure out why I thought the train was so much more expensive. Hmmmm. Woops, my B.:o

I would bet a nickel that one would find a ride to Medway or Bangor while walking from Monson north.

Lot of people have dropped vehicles, or family in the area. Only one way to "civilization."
