Currently 22 degrees above 6000' in the Pisgah. And I'm planning a 3 day hike of the Art Loeb Trail there after the SORUCK!

Looks cold!
One of my faves.
Perfectly framed view, and blue skies abound.
Thanks for the reminder of life outside the flatlands.

That's brave!
I never thought about a winter trek there.

The BRP will be closed, but I'm guessing you'll be able to walk in and walk out - drivable uttle at both ends?
How are conditions at the BS camp end?
Just imagine that wind on the knife edge!
Be sure to write from Cold Mountain. :D

Hiked up to Cold Mtn for the Boy Scout camp a couple of years ago. Only 5 miles but its all up hill, took 5 hours, only two to get back. Spent a windy cold night there. Great views, said I would never do it again, but sure would love to...........

Wanna join in the fun Jan? Haven't figured out all the logistics quite yet. But I will. Mark Stanfill, former Cumberland Conference staffer and current Tennessee Youth Conservation Corps Director will be joining me.

I got on it last night around midnight and saw a black screen. Duh, let's wait for it to load in, dang slow dial up . . . Wait a minute! It's dark out there on Cold Mountain! Waited around to see if some hikers went thru with flashlights . . .

Hey, nice pics ed!
Noticed you uploaded some very large pics and probably took awhile.
If you download irfanview (http://www.download.com/IrfanView/3000-2192-10021962.html)
or a similar program to your pc you can resize/downsize your pics and speed up the process alot, say 1024 x 768 with my dial up usually takes less than 5 mins. per pic, sometimes faster. The download is free BTW
I went through quite a learning curve when i first started posting pics here.
Glad you figured it out!
Keep em coming

woodsy, I like the pics I uploaded, but I really don't care for the lack of quality focus that they have. Considering the fact that my digital camera has an auto focus only, I really need to learn a better way of getting the camera to do a better job on some of these panorama shots. Thanks for the feedback. :sun

At the conclusion of his talk on Saturday, he mentioned being about to set off on a hike. I think it was much further south than the Art Loeb, though. Maybe a section of the Florida Trail? Hopefully that'll be a bit warmer.

Shining Rock is great in the winter! In snow it's beautiful.
They do close the Parkway but NC 276 and NC 215 are always open.
They BS Camp Trailhead is always open and driveable unless there's a ton of snow(rare) Trailhead on 276 is Big East Fork and from there the Shining Creek Trail is 3+ miles to ridgeline at Shining Rock Gap @ Art Loeb.
NC 215 has the Flat Laurel Creek Trailhead or the Mountains to Sea...both connect with the Art Loeb.
I hiked in on the Flat Laurel Creek Trail 2 weeks ago (Jan. 4) and took the Art Loeb over to Shining Rock where I met up with two friends who had hiked in from the BS Camp. Windy! wow really high winds all night and a few flurries. The spring at Shining Rock Gap was flowing better than I have seen it flow in years!-snow melt probably.
