ATTroll,

How is Appalachian Pages coming along? Do you have an update on when the new guide will be shipping?

Does the publication cover medical facilities? If not, you may want to consider this for future editions. Knowing where to find immediate care facilities and doctors offices could encourage people to get treatment before their condition worsens. Also, from discussions in other forums, it may be beneficial to include pet care facilities. People hiking with dogs may be more attentive to their dogs' medical needs if they saw an establishment listed in the guide.

If a thread is started and no one is around to respond, does it make a sound?

Maybe he hasn't seen your post yet, give the man a break!

But yeah, listing clinics, hospitals, and veterinary services (and boarding services) is something that should be included in ALL of the hiker guidebooks.

It has been a week, but I suspect he doesn't keep up with the Forums anyway. I was going to email him. Thanks for your thoughts. I doubt if those ideas are going to get in, at least not this year. Maybe Bob McCaw would be interested in enhancing his guide.

Sorry I did not see your post. Awol and I have been very busy as of lately putting the final touches on the book. I have tried to keep up with the forum posts here on WhiteBlaze but must have missed this one.

Yes we are including Hospitals in each town listing and there phone numbers if there is one. The same goes for veterinary clinics and there phone numbers. The listing would look something like this with the medical icon on the front of it.

Unicoi County Memorial Hospital 423-743-3141. Unicoi Hospital for Animals 423-743-9172. Dentist, pharmacy

Being this is our first year in print there may be some things we may miss and if we do then we are asking everyone to let us know so that we can include them in the next addition.

The book is going to print on Monday. We should have something to mail mid January if all goes well.

Great idea! Have you considered some abbreviating? Over the course of the entire publ., pages and $ can be saved :)

It's the first printing right now. I am sure we will learn from some of our mistakes and improve on them for the next addition. We have abbreviated on some things. With responses and feedback from this first addition it can only get better.

Here is my concern as a 2008 thru-hiker:
I would like to support the cause, but seeing as this is the first time this will be published, I worry that things may be missed, which could have an effect on my hike. I know this is a minor concern in the grand scheme of things, but it is something going through my head as I try to determine what handbook to carry next year.

I know on the Appalachian Pages website, you have shown what a town page would look like, have you considered what an average page would look like, such as how the information about shelters will be written and such.

Also, if I just buy the book, no special things like mail drop and the likes, is will the pages still be easily removable, or will there be an option to not have the pages easily removed?

Thanks,
Kirby

Ignore my idea about the shelter informatin page on the site, I just realized there was already one there.

Kirby,
Your concerns are typical for first-timers attempting a thru-hike. When you look back (~month being on the AT) most of your concerns will seem trivial and some you'll think are kind of embarrasing. I wouldn't worry about using the first issue of Appalachian Pages, especially considering whose involved with producing it.

Look at it this way, you can be instumental in providing significant upgraded information to the writers.

That's one of the reason I am carrying it next year for my thru hike. I want it to be a good book, so I will carry it and note errors or suggestions to give to AWOL or ATTroll. Besides, if there is an error here and there, that won't ruin my hike.

I understand your concerns. We received our mileage data from the ATC and with the mileage data the shelters were all included. We did not copy any of our info from the Companion or Wingfoot’s book. We had field editors just like the Companion go out and verify data, collect information and submit the data to us. The quality of the data is only as good as the info we received from our team. There may be some establishments that are not in our book that are listed in the other two sources I mentioned and in the same manner there may be data in our book that is not included in there’s.

We do have the essential data that is required I can promise that. The mileage will also be the same as the other books because like us they also received there data from the ATC.

The bound book will have perforated pages and they should be able to tare out easier then non perforated pages. The pages do not have to be removed unless you want them removed.

Thank you for planning on doing this for us. We are hoping that others will do the same thing with this years print. The more feedback we get the better the book will be.

why wouldn't it?

Sounded like info was collected from different sources, so it is possible that a source left UJ's out for their own reasons. From reading the history of UJ's, I think they should be included.

I know, that is why I was asking. I thought it might be interesting to see which way the wind was blowing here.

Hm, since Ms. Janet isn't up and running with her new Hostel yet, that is going to be missed on the Erwin page or is she still offering shuttle service while she hunts for a new home for her Hostel?

It is official.

We sent the book to the publisher a few minutes ago. It is all a waiting game now for the publisher. As soon as we receive them we will start shipping them. We can pretty safely assure you that if you ordered a book you will have it before the end of January.

it says on site. bound and unbound. does this mean "binding or spiral", or "binding or loose pages"?

attroll
12-13-2007, 05:57
Binding mean that is is like a regular book. It would be the same a how Wingfoot's book is bound. Unbound are all loose pages that are not bound at all.
