View Full Version : Springer New Years Eve Campout
Is anybody planning to celebrate New Years on Springer this year? I couldn't make it last year and was wondering if there was any interest in it this year.

Weather permitting, i may go. i went 3 years ago and there were over 40 at/around springer mtn.
I'm planning to be there, since I failed to make it on time last year...
L. Wolf, have you been up there for New Years before??? Whats the scene like? KTR & I hear its a grand time :)
I hope to be there but this year I'll be chaecking the weather a little closer than last year - last year was very wet - like camping in a cloud

yeah, a few years ago. it was fun. no hard core partying. nobody made it to midnight that i recall.

So far excess rain ain't been a problem in this part of the country.

If the L Wolf is going, I will certainly make my plans to be there. I have been mostly lurking here for a long while and have read many posts from him that were funny, entertaining, truthful, and some that have no good description. He keeps me coming back here for the entertainment. Can't wait to meet the man himself.

Ed Speer normally has a hammock campout on Springer. Good way to test your winter gear setup

actually that night I was the only one who stayed up to midnight - I think I went up to the summit and by the time I got back everyone was in bag - I watched some distant fireworks from the picnic table then hit the hammock - you are however correct - no hard core partying but one younger hammocker did pass out / sleep under his hammock - he was laying on the under quilt instead of the hammock

If the Boy Scouts were planning a 40 member campout on Springer most members on the website would be totally opposed and negative toward the Scouts. Critical comments such as "10 person limit" yada yada yada would be flying ad nauesum.

i know. was thinkin' that yesterday when this thread started. :D
The people who show up at Springer are not necessarily part of an organized group. There will probably be a few SOBOs finishing up (possibly including Hammock Engineer), a few NOBOs starting out (Stumpknocker?), a handful of hammock campers testing their cold-weather setups, and assorted other pilgrims. Unlike a Scout troup, it should be mostly adults--so there will be more drinking, but also more people going to bed early. Should be fun.
Sadly, I am going to be working all night on new years. Its my turn to be on call for new years. Otherwise, I would consider going somewhere on the trail for new years. In PA a lot of people goto the Pinnacle.

Are you resposible for those huge flames coming out of those two stacks in St. John? What is that ?
Was anyone up there last year? I was in Dahlonega December 31st last year with the intention of summiting Mount Springer New Years Eve, but bailed due to the monsoon.

Just saw that Stumpknocker will be starting on NYD. Sounds like a good crew will be up there.Stumpknocker told me at the hiker Christmas party in Franklin that he was starting his northbound hike from Springer on New Years Day.
Here's the directions to Springer trailhead (.9 miles from summit):
http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?p=388678
And from the Georgia AT Club website:
Directions: From GA Hwy. 52, 9.5 miles east of Amicalola Falls State Park or 8.5 miles west of Dahlonega, turn north at Grizzle's old store (closed, sign for store is damaged). Go 2.0 miles and turn right on USFS Road #28 (look for sign that points to Georgia Wildlife Management Area on left and sign to Jones Creek Road on right). After 2.2 miles, bear left at fork onto USFS Road #77 and go 5.1 miles. Take hard left onto USFS Road #42 and go 2.7 miles to A.T., passing a Benton MacKaye Trail crossing (diamond blazes) along the way. There is a large parking area along north side of road.
Alternate directions: From GA Hwy. 52 in Cartecay (12.1 miles west of Amicalola Falls State Park or 7.4 miles east of Ellijay), turn north on Roy Road between Methodist Church and Stanley's Grocery and go 9.7 miles to end of road. Turn right and go 2.2 miles to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (these are paved roads). Turn right onto gravel USFS Road #42 and go 6.8 miles to the parking area on north side of road. NOTE: These Forest Service roads can be quite rough, and may be impassable by car or van in winter or very wet weather. Contact the Chattahoochee National Forest Toccoa Ranger District in Blue Ridge, Georgia (706) 632-3031 for current road conditions.

Is it possible to get up onto Springer Mtn. from FS Road 42 in a wheelchair.
A man I met called Terry the Traveler wanted to make the summit. He was up at Baxter State Park a while ago talking to through hikers and is now down this way looking at getting as close as he can to the beginning.
He wanted to do the AT years ago but an assault left him paralyzed from the chest down. These last few months he has been getting as close as he can to the trail while driving from Maine to Georgia.
We know about the get together at the end of the year and thought it would be fun if he could join. Or, maybe we will just bring up some water to the forest road for those in need.
Would appreciate any info on the trail to the top, or how to get someone in a chair up there for a few hours.

The AT from FS42 to Springer summit is sidehill most of the way and too narrow for a wheelchair. In my opinion.
I'm trying to remember if the Benton Mac from FS42 is any better but the times I've walked it I wasn't scouting wheelchair routes. For sure it's less rutted.

We started there on Mar 15th intending to thru-hike but I had extremely painful foot problems and we had to drop off at Dicks Creek Gap. We LOVED the people we met along the way and miss that part of the hike more than anything. So the chance to get together is almost too much to pass up!

Take your pick. Hike in from ASP or FS 42 or hike South on the the AT or BMT from various trailheads to the North.

see link: http://www.fs.fed.us/conf/fire/
but I suspect any suspension of the fire ban is just late in being published due to the holidays - the fire danger map shows mostly low danger for North GA - link: http://weather.gfc.state.ga.us/Maps/fd.gif
Due to family stuff I'm going to have to skip this years celebration - ya'll give my best to Stumpknocker and the rest of the early NOBOs.

Sorry you won't be there!
My second-hand water report says it's flowing.

As hard as it's been raining the last couple days, we could probably dip water from nearly anywhere.
Looks nice tomorrow, though.

Yeah, there was water at Springer on Thursday and its rained at least twice since then.

This is good, for lots of reasons. From the selfish perspective, I was not at all looking forward to packing enough water for 24 hours up and down the Approach Trail.

When are you doing that? I'm thinking of coming up but time's running out.

Tomorrow. Drive down in the morning, hike to summit in the afternoon, reverse direction the following morning.
I hope there's a tent spot left by the time we arrive.

The weather people are calling for a 70% chance of snow on New Years Day for Western North Carolina...some say as much as 4-6 inches.
The Spiritwind people say there's a 100% chance I'm heading out the door for Springer in the morning.
Happy New Year.:sun

So, who went, what happened, who said what to whom, who snored?
Details!

So which is the real approach trail...the one with the blue blazes down by the falls UP the 175 steps cross the falls then up 425 stairs to the top OR the one that is directly through the arches the nice dirt trail we have known to love...but has no blazes..I am so confused. :(
The Approach Trail moved to the steps last year (2007), so the blue blazed trail you are describing is now the Approach Trail.
I'm the maintainer for that section (1.1). No water bars to speak of, but I do have to keep an eye out for termites in the steps. ;)
I'm thinking everyone is still sleeping at this point, but looking forward to a "trip" report :)

The details are fuzzy :o .
I remember that the Spring was running like a small creek until Marta started boiling water with her new Svea.
Stumpknocker actually drank a modest amount of Jack Daniels, and..
Geek is crazy. :D
Oh and there was a fire, L. Wolf, but i swear I didn't start it.
