I am thinking of going in May, making average miles for a guy in "weekender" physical condition, carrying 20-30 pound load. How long do you think this would take?

L. Wolf? What say you?

I'd give it 30-35 days.

I'd give it 30-35 days.

That would be too long. Is there a good starting point for a hike of approximately 18-20 days that would end up at the south end of SNP?

Start around Pearisburg/Catawba.

Pearisburg perhaps? You could park your car if need be at The Holy Family Hostel.

As an alternate try Damascus to Daleville. Then you'll get to hike the Grayson Highlands, the best part of Virginia. Others things you'd miss by starting in Pearisburg include Chestnut Knob, Burke's Garden and the cool falls (Dismal Falls?). You'll get Tinker Cliffs, Dragon's Tooth and McAfee Knob as your finale. Then you can finish by pigging out on Chinese or Pizza hut AYCE in Daleville

That sounds interesting, A Train. How many total miles is it? How long do you think it would take most people?

Its very dry in the Mt Rogers area. So expect a longer trek.

This is off the top of my head (I set fire to all my data books) but I wanna say it's 250 miles which you should be able to do comfortably in 16-20 days.

Also, there are some miles out of Pearisburg that are difficult and include much rock hopping and a huge climb outta town. Not sure i'd wanna start a hike here.

Assuming typical weather, 35 days if you can avg somewhere around 12 miles/day.

Start around Pearisburg/Catawba.

That would work. I'd just note (having recently done this stretch) that it's moderately difficult terrain -- at least more so than the trail in VA south of Pearisburg. Not comparable to NH or ME, but more like NC. Some nice views, though.

I think Damascus to Daleville sounds most promising at this point. Mapquest shows it as 134 road miles, so it's probably a little longer on the trail?

Thinks LW, if I had followed the posts a little better I would have figured out what the 254 miles mentioned earlier was.

Don't forget to factor in zero days.
