View Full Version : Any WB'ers from Atlanta? Outfitter question
I'm in Atlanta this weekend, anybody from this area? I'm looking for the best outfitter to check out while I have some free time, or any other suggestions of "don't miss" places.
Smile :)
Hot-Lanta opened up the largest aquarium last year or so... if youre into fish...
Excellent, thanks, I;ll google their locations :)

Little five points.
There is High Country north of Buckhead on Roswell Rd. You can get your grease fix by eating at The Varsity.
I'm in the Cobb Co (I think) Galleria or something area, near 41 and 285, which outfitter is the closest to here, trying to figure out where I am in relation to these locations now.....I have three or four days to look around :)
smile, go to moutain crossing or rei's....am just east of you...
go east (north) on I-285 take the GA400 north exit (if you go south you won't be able to turn around until you pay a few $.50 tolls). Get off at Abernaty exit. REI is somwhere close by. From there I can't give exact directions, I just drive thru all the urban sprawl until I find it
Used to work in the Cobb Galleria complex. The closest REI is in Dunwoody....take 285 east to Ashford Dunwoody Rd. Go north and turn left on Perimeter Center W. REI will be about 1 mile up on the left. Just know that traffic is hell in Dunwoody this time of the year!
Perimeter REI: (dunwoody)
285 to GA400, go north, exit #5, go east, REI is about a mile down on the right.

Little five points.Max! This is the straight forward section. There is nothing straight about LFP. It's can be pretty forward, though.
The REI described will be, I believe, the second light after you clear the GA-400 intersection. It's next door, in fact in the same building, as Circuit City.
Wow, thanks everyone from ATL area! If anyone wants to get together for lunch this weekend, give me a PM :-)
Always nice to meet hikers, and see ones I've hike with before :)
If you are coming from GA-400, it will be the 4th light. They added a light at the Marta station parking deck. If you come in from from GA-400, the traffic might not be as bad. Ashford Dunwoody Rd gets congested during Christmas shoping season, so you might want to try 400.
smile, want to attend the x-mas party in franklin, nc?

I believe they are having a members only scratch and dent sale tomorrow. Non members are welcome but the sale might make it more crowded than usual.
I vote for Mountain Crossings.
If you have the time and transportation you might really enjoy the trip to Walasi-Yi aka Mountain Crossings. It's right at Neels Gap on the trail. There is sure to be plenty of activity this weekend and of course...it's a great place to spend lots of money! :)

Mountain crossings is where I would go. It has specialized gear, is on the AT, great knowledgeable people, etc. etc.
It is about 4X as far compared to the REI, but REI's are the same everywhere for the most part.
How far is Mtn. Crossings from here by the Galleria? Good suggestion :)
Also, when is the Christmas party in Franklin, this weekend? I've missed that one, and I'll have to google Franklin and see how far I am from there, sounds like fun.
Went to the Cumberland (?) Mall today, crazy shopping time of year, and no good gear in sight. :)
in discovery mills mall in Lawrenceville, outfitter: sunny-sports 30% of on all stuff, and go to-- Medieval times-- there, 85 N exit sugarloaf E - big bass pro shop

There are folks there already.
Most are arriving tomorrow morning/afternoon. From Atlanta, get on I-85 North to 985 North. Stay on it all the way to Franklin. I estimate about 2-2 1/2 hours from downtown Atlanta.
Sure wish I could make that, can't get away that long! You guys have an awesome time, and I will try to squeeze that one in for next year - always like being in Franklin and have friends nearby. :)
Thanks for the invite though!
you could head south a few miles on hwy 41 (the road between galleria and the mall) and hike around the chattahoochee river national recreation area which is the southernmost trout stream. the rei up I-85 (off at clairmont road exit and do a u-turn under the interstate and back south on the access road) has more hiking and camping gear than the other locations.

The Oldest Atlanta REI at frontage rd just off Claremont Rd has a larger inventory than Mall of Ga or Perimeter REI's. The clerks at all the REI's will call the other stores to check if they are out of an item you seek. Also have REI/REI Outlet Internet terminal in the stores for customers to use.

I second the Little Five Points suggestion. Might not find any gear, but it's a really cool area to check out. One place I never miss when I'm in Atlanta is the Flying Biscuit (restaurant). There's one near LFP, and another some place else (they have a website). I've driven to Atlanta (about 3 hours) just to get dessert at the Flying Biscuit - if that tells you anything.
Sounds yummy! Thanks for all the info GA people, hope to meet some of you at SoRuck. If anyone is interested, today and tomorrow there is an American Indian Art show/exhibitiion at the Galleria. Very cool gifts for those into that sort of thing, prices range from very affordable to sculptures that will probably not sell in this economy, but are cool to look at and appreciate. There is music, dance exhibitions and Bill Miller ( native Nammy winning artist) is performing as well. There's tipi set up in there, and on the outside of the galleria, with lots of hides and other interesting things.
:)
Well, Atlanta was a great trip, just wish I could've made it to Franklin, or even to the trail for a few days. I got to meet Survivor Dave and hope he has a great hike next year!
Sorry I missed Rabbit and M, next time or at SoRuck ladies! :)
