View Full Version : Billville?
Ok, folks, you're going to laugh at me, and for that I am prepared. I hope y'all wll forgive my niavety, but being new to the AT community, there are still plenty of things I don't understand. Billville is one of them. I've seen the term used on other threads and in the photo gallery, but what is it and what does it mean? Laugh if you must, but can someone please answer this for me? Many thanks in advance! :D

Thanks for the info and resonable reply, TinMan.

LW was being reasonable in his own way. The search feature here works very well and comes in handy especially with topics that have previously been discussed at length. Try it.

I gave it a shot, but no real explanation, per se. Jack's post was exactly what I needed to understand that one. My favorite new AT term? Pink Blazing! :D Glad I like to learn new things.
AH, you'll have the vocab down in no time!

No secret at all. Billville is a loose collection of hiker friends, most of whom, (but not all) have thru-hiked the A.T. at least once. The folks in Billville get together several times over the course of a year, sometimes to put on feeds or special events for hikers; sometimes we do Trail work or maintenance somewhere; sometimes we just get together and cook. We have several annual get-togethers, including Trail Days and the ALDHA Gathering, where we generally camp together and hang out. We also get together during the winter and take over the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon for a weekend in March. And we get together the weekend after Thanksgiving and re-create the Holiday (some of the Billville people are really good cooks!)
But no....you don't have to be named Bill to be in Billville, nor is there a membership application. We're pretty open-minded and take all comers. We have soldiers and teachers and former military men and bookstore managers and bankers. We have drinkers and tea-totalers. We have observant Catholics and a few pagans, too. We have lots of Red Sox fans and also the occasional (tho thankfully rare) Yankees supporter. We have flaming liberals and also some whacko conservatives. We have Finnish death-metal enthusiasts and we have people who listen to nothing but Cash and Springsteen.
In short, Tin Man, we're pretty much open to anything, except maybe drum circles and contra dancing.
Drop by sometime! Billville is always looking for new faces.
And this goes for everyone else out there, too.
They even let dinosaurs join.
I's like to know the requirements to be officially designated as a Billville event? AKA Billville Approved.

Yikes! No offense, but I think I may have to pass on these events. Although the hiking pole throwing contest looks interesting. :D
They even let dinosaurs join.I've only met the Dinos twice and I know from experience that I couldn't imagine them not letting you guys be a part of anyting as nice as y'all are. :D

... Billville appears to be a small, but highly visible and vocal (electronically that is), subgrouping in the larger long distance hiking subculture.
At times they can be pretty loud in person, too.
And don't get me started on the costumes!
I ,like many, have enjoyed the fellowship and fun that is Billville.:D
Some of those on the outer fringes of long distance backpacking can be bitter  and jealous.:(

Wow! Those frolicking dinosaurs are quick!
This is the straightforward section, so I want to answer questions about what Billville is and what we do. This is based on me actually being in Billville and attending many of their events - not just looking at photos.
For example, 'we' allow all sorts of hikers and non-hikers into 'our' group. Purists, blue blazers, yellow blazers, trail angels, section hikers - even southbounders. 'His' group consists strictly of those willing to day hike the AT and camp near a road at night. No deviation is allowed.
'Our' group likes varying type of music, both pre-recorded and live. We do occasionally burst into spontaious dancing, but that is pretty rare. We also enjoy adult beverages, the kind that anyone over the age of 21 can legally purchase to enhance enjoyment with good friends. 'His' group likes polka music and someone instructing you on how to dance. No deviations or adult beverages are allowed. Why are 'adult' beverages banned... well, I'll let everyone else speculate on that.
