View Full Version : Pot Cozys
Ok i know their is some stuff about this somewhere on the site but when i did a search did not come up with nothing. So what i like to know is what can i make one out of. I though about useing a oven mitt since they are made to take a lot of heat.
I also saw a liner for cook sheet pans it was made out of some kind of heat res mat. you get a about 2 feet of ot for 6.99.
i made one out of an old ripped/retired fleece jacket. it's kinda' ugly, but it works i guess?
I use my hat, I'm already carrying it anyway.

George Andrews, "TinMan" (not WB's TinMan) even sells pot cozies for plastic bowls.
Check it out, here's a link directly to the pot cozy page:

I made one years ago out of pieces from an old closed cell foam sleeping pad. Worked OK but fell apart and I abaondoned the whole idea for several years.
The one I have/use now is made out of that foil covered bubble wrap insulation called "Reflectix". A lot thinner and it has lasted for quite a while now. I like it for 2 reasons: First I tend to get my water boiling, dump in my meal stuff, take it off the flame and then let it sit for a while before eating. The Cozy seems to keep things really hot while the stuff soaks up the water. Second, the cookpot is generally still a tad on the hot side when I start eating and the Cozy allows me to sit the pot on my lap for eating.

We used the aluminum thermawrap stuff that gets wrapped around frozen food products (my hubby is in to sales and buys cookie dough for groups). We made our cozies from that and they worked great. We still have pieces of it laying around.

ive seen one made out of wally world ccf. i think this fellow had permanently attached it to pot, which required him to carry another pot to boil in. he felt the fuel savings were worth it.
I recenty made one out of duct insulation. It's about a quarter inch thick, grey foam with adhesive on one side and aluminum foil on the other. A big roll (I don't know how long, maybe 15'; about 16" wide I think) was $17 at Home Depot.
It's very easy to cut and very flexible. You'll want to cover the adhesive side with tin foil. The R-value is, I believe, 6. Mine's kinda ugly, but then it was my first try and I'm clumsy with craft projects. Just cut one to fit around the pot, a piece for the side, and a lid. Duct tape the pieces together, make the lid so it fits down over the rest. You could make a number of them with one roll of the stuff.
In winter at least I like the idea of using a piece of clothing which you can then put on after. The other idea is something you can even put under your clothing, so it really only needs to be warm enough to keep from scalding your belly, and the heat will be used twice.

The problem with using clothing as a pot/freezer bag cozy is that many times you really need a cozy at the same time you really need a hat.

Reflectix is the stuff. You can get a roll at a hardware store for about 25 bucks -- it'll be enough to make cozies for you and all your friends until the cows come home. And then some. You'll want a roll of aluminum tape, too.
Making the cozy is pretty easy. Just play around with it for a while.
You can also buy them from antigravitygear.
I don't like that reflectix stuff for what its made for, and how they advertise it, but I can see how it would make a decent cozy. Maybe a wool scarf.

You also don't want attract animals to your hat while you're in bed. Careful with that food!:D
I should have noted that I have several cozys (-ies??) that I made with blue foam pads either found or bought dirt cheap. I put them together with duct tape. Occasionally the tape needs to be replaced, but it hasn't been a problem.
Another thing that can be made for the freeze-dried or zip-lock cookers is an envelope of the same material or reflectix. I made one a couple of years ago, and it doubles as my sit pad.

I found that making a template out of heavy paper or cardboard resulted in less waste when it came time to cut the Reflectix. I haven't found a whole lot of difference between using aluminum tape as opposed to quality duct tape (except for the cost).

Footslogger, how do you pack it? Do you just leave it around your pot and store it that way or fold it up?

Does reflectix burn? Is it bad for you? Could you wrap it around your pot while it boils your water then slip a full sized one over that 2x on the sides one on the bottom. Will it save fuel or just give of deadly fumes?

I leave it around the cookpot. That's the secret to making it last. Nice thing is that the cozy adds very little dimension to the cookpot and it still fits in the Evernew blue nylon stuff sack. Everything I need to cook a meal, minus the alcohol and food.

At high enough temperatures the outer foil coating might burn but the bigger problem would be the internal air sacks. I take he cozy off for cooking and then when my water is boiling I take the cookpot off the burner and insert it in the cozy.
Never have had any discoloration or burning that way.

It also tells you to use Reflectix, and says that you can get it at a hardware store. A bit more specificity would have been appreciated, cuz Home Depot didn't have it, and if they ain't a hardware store...

The problem with using clothing as a pot/freezer bag cozy is that many times you really need a cozy at the same time you really need a hat.I use an old, tired out watch cap for my cozy. Means I've got a spare hat if I get really stupid and loose my fleece hat, and the watch cap works about as well as anything else. Reflectix is probably one of the lighter materials to make a cozy out of, but anything that insulates and is reasonably durable will work.
While the same weight as Reflectix, Insul Bright fabric (found at Jo-ann's Fabrics) is flexible, sewable, machine washable, breathable, blahblah. There is a reason I use the fabric in my sewn cozies. The stuff is great! It is mylar infused fabric and can be used in clothing as well.
It isn't cheap buying it retail ($6 a yard) but it works well if you can sew! I buy mine in 40 yard rolls direct from the company (it is made in the US).

Just don't forget to take the pot out of the cozy before you use it for a pillow and all will be good.
