Zetix is a fabric so strong it will resist multiple car bomb blasts without breaking. It absorbs and disperses the energy from explosions thanks to an inner structure so adamantiumtastic it can be used in body armor, window covering, military tents and hurricane defenses—it might even be able to fend off my ex-wife. When not shielding from explosions, it can be used as medical sutures that won't damage body tissue. All of this is thanks to a property that apparently defies the laws of physics:
Zetix is built around the principle of auxetics: objects that actually get fatter the more you stretch them. Though it hurts to think about, as you will discover, it actually makes sense.

You could make one out of nylon.

Is apparently way better than nylon, even Kevlar.

I've seen some talk of this material on serious DYI sites... it may actually become the outdoor fabric of the future. Its lack of ready availability and prohibitive cost will likely keep it from replacing more mainstream fabrics anytime soon.

Is apparently way better than nylon, even Kevlar. It's also not available, which tends to hinder product development. Some backpacking products are called "bombproof" but that just means they are durable, I don't really think blast protection is the manufacturers' intended purpose. Basis weight (weight per area) isn't stated. Nor is abrasion resistance, which doesn't always track with strength and is the reason why there aren't any silk work gloves.

Even with an ultralight, ultrastrong fabric, the amount of gear you can stuff in a 5000 cu in pack means it is going to need a suspension system of some sort, and that means stays, foam pads, buckles on straps, etc. There's a point of diminishing returns with going ultralight, and big volume combined with low weight seems to defeat its own purpose.

You could already make a pack that large that only weighs a pound if you wanted to make one out of rip-stop nylon and have just a basic shoulder strap/hip belt set up..It wouldn`t carry any weight worth a dang though..Most of the weight in a GOOD back pack comes from the suspension system and not the actual pack body

...some of y'all must have strange ideas of what 'work' means....

Understandable, I guess. I mean I could wear silk gloves all day at work and it would neither help nor hinder my work and I guess I could call them my work gloves. But when I'm not at work and am doing work then silk work gloves wouldn't work.
