View Full Version : Ga->? Section
Quick question, gang. If I wanted to start at Springer and hike a section, where are the first 2 easy access points to the AT north of the NC state line? Can anyone offer some info/intel on this? Any help is greatly appreciated. :D

USFS road 71, 7 miles past the border and Rock Gap 27 miles past the border
the easiest access before Ga/NC border is US 76, Dicks Creek gap about 9 miles before the border
Thanks L. Wolf. What's the first town past he border? Franklin?

yes. franklin
Thanks again. I'm trying to figure out a section to hike with Doc in the spring. Was thinking about starting at Springer and going north to Franklin or so maybe.
Bly Gap is the GA/NC border but no access. It's about 7 miles further to Deep Gap. There is an accessible USFS road to there off of US64. I've googled and cannot find specific directions. I've been there so many times I don't pay attention to the road numbers. From Deep Gap it's another 21 miles to Wallace Gap and Old US 64, where you can contact Ron Haven for a shuttle into Franklin and if you like, stay at his Budget Inn.

But beware, USFS 71 is single lane and I doubt maintained in winter, but don't know for sure.....

71 is a good road - passengers cars have no problem - but it is closed during the winter. contact the Natahala Hiking Club for details or search the website.
Another option from Deep Gap if you do not have the time or want to do another 21 miles to Wallace Gap, and IF USFS 71 is closed, is to take the Kimsey Creek Trail (about 4 miles) in Deep Gap down to the Standing Indian Campground. The campground is closed from late Novemeber to about Easter weekend, but the road is open (paved to the campground). I'm sure Ron Haven would pick you up there as well. ;)

4 miles north of Bly gap is the Chunky Gal Trail. Take it 5.5 miles to US 64.
Just reread the thread and you mentioned "Spring." You might welcome the showers at Standing Indian Campground, which should be open starting Easter weekend! ;)

I like that idea a lot! Already talked to Doc about it and it's a tentative go. I'm doing my online research tonight along with my map research tomorrow. Thanks again! :D
I've done the kimsey Creek to Standing Indian, it's a nice hike.
I've done the kimsey Creek to Standing Indian, it's a nice hike. It's looking like we're going to do Springer to Standing Indian in the spring, probably around early-mid may, depending on work schedules, vacations, etc. I, for one am looking forward to it! :banana
Nice time of year to hike that area. Have a great hike.
Nice time of year to hike that area. Have a great hike. Thanks, Lilred, I appreciate it. We're both looking forward to it a great deal. As it stands now, we paln to leave a car at Standing Indian and Doc's wife is dropping us at Amicalola Falls to take the approach trail. I know there are easier ways to Springer, but it just seems right to do tha approach trail. I can't wait!
