What is a good choice for a 2-3 man tent that is also relatively light?

I just did a lot of research on this. If you don't want a hammock, I would go with either the Big Agnes Seedhouse or MSR hubba hubba, IMO. My husband and I finally decided on the Hubba hubba. It blows my mind how you seem to get so much for so little-weight wise and durability wise. I got mine from REI last week and it was $100 dollars OFF. Pretty good deal. Good luck!!:)

If it's a two to three *man* tent you're talking about, we really don't want to talk about the things you can't do in a hammock. Minnesota Smith might start lecturing us.:banana

second the hubba hubba sugggestion. for 2 man at least.my wife and i are using one next year on our thru attempt. if your going 3 man they also have the mutha hubba. i considered this one but its really big and i think you would be hard pressed to find an area on the AT open enough for this big tent.

I see that you are from what I asume to be the Johnson City area. If you find yourself in the Nashville/ Brentwood, TN area come by the REI store and set some of those tents up, crawl in them and see how they fit you, look at the construction, etc. That's the best way to shop them. You may want to call ahead and see if the ones you'd like to try are in stock.

Another nice 2 person backpacking tent is the REI Half Dome. Not the lightest tent, but good size, 2 doors, 2 vestibules, good price. If you have 2 people sharing the weight it works out OK.

Ms. Dino, how are these 2 tents with respect to condensation in colder weather? They appear to be a single wall tent and I've had problems with single walls when it gets cold and rainy and can't vent them well.

I used a Tarptent the entire hike, I did sleep in shelters some of the time..

The trick is to set up the tarptent so it faces the incoming wind on low wind nights. Also if you set it up under tree cover it reduce condensation, which is most of the time..

I learned that condensation is causd by the termperature difference so if you can sleep a littel colder than you can reduce the condensation too..

I felt like the amount of condensation that I experienced was insignificant compared to the weight savings of the tent.

Except for one of my first nights out when I set up next to a stream that flooded, my tarptent kept me dry the whole hike....

I use a REI half dome. it has a good size to weight ratio, vents real well year around.Yep its a little heavy but I can't take really small tents and hammocks are not for me.. I really like when its pouring rain, makes carrying it worthwhile..

I have rei half and Q dome and also duo....i lug the duo,but if going lite i take my smd tarp and bug bivy at 12oz.

SMD DUO is a nice setup.

I agree Slow, I got in a SMD DUO at Traildays, lots of room for two and a sweet design. A condo for a solo hiker :)

The Hubba Hubba is an excellent tent. I was so glad when we switched to it for New England.

I have to agree with envirodiver about the REI half dome tent. I recently purchased one and though not the lightest tent...it has 2 doors and vestubles. We weathered a nasty thunderstorm with strong winds and it stayed dry and stable. It is also a freestanding tent...another plus.
This will be the tent my wife and I will do our thru hike in 08'.

If you really want a 3 person tent I can recommend the two kinds my wife and I use. One is the Sierra Designs Sirrius 3 and the other is a Tarptent Rainshadow. They both have plenty of room for us and our dog.
