View Full Version : No PocketMail?

I just got off the phone with PocketMail and they told me there were no new units available until after I started hiking in March. However, they were willing to send me a refurbished one for $59 with all the warranties in place.

Not a big fan of refurbished anything, warranty or not.

Can you get PocketMail anywhere else besides directly from them?

I checked e-bay and other googled areas and no luck.

I would rather do that at 8.2 oz. than mailing hard copies to my TJ transcriber. It's easier to cut and paste.

My wife has a brand new Pocket Mail Composer unit that she bought and never activated. I'll check with her and see if she's interested in selling it. Pretty sure she paid about the same as what PocketMail was going to charge you ...but this one is brand new, in the box.

Thanks for the link to the sale Cuffs, but it's a package deal and no warranty. It's also 4 years old. I don't wan't it to crap out and have to buy another somewhere. I guess that's true of any electronics, new or used.

Thanks for the info HopefulHiker.

Thanks 'Slogger, I anxiously await your PM!!!

Can the info be transferred to another user, or is it purchaser specific?

=====================================

Yes, it can be transferred. This is a brand new unit that has never had service activated and hs never been used. All you need is to have the unit Serial Number. My wfe and I both bought these new last year. I was approached about mine by someone here on WB and sold it. Believe that hiker used it this year on their thru.

That's great news. I'll keep my fingers crossed that she says yes.

You my want to consider using Postholer. You'll be able to update your journal directly, and add such things as waypoint (if you have a GPS), elevation, miles hiked, etc.

http://postholer.com/journal/index.php

You can make a note of the necessary codes in your Pocketmail and import them into each entry to be reflected on your journal page

I don't think Trail Journals has this feature.

Thanks Sly,

I have a transcriber who I believe is more stoked about this whole thing than I am! He will be cutting and pasting from the PocketMail address and will be downloading/uploading my pics that I send him on a disc.

I can picture the first time I have problems with putting entries in from a PocketMail to TJ will be a demonstration in how far I can toss it over a mountain!:datz

Well, atleast he can run it through a spell checker before he posts, which pocketmail doesn't have. That's one of the issues I had with the devices, bit overall it's still a good way to stay in touch on the trail

Survivor Dave--
I just saw a used PocketMail for sale on the CDT list, together with a set of 2007 CDT maps. Check it out.

The lack of a spellchecker was a bummer. Still like the unit overall, but I'm probably going with a Palm Treo(or whatever) and Folding keyboard for whatever trip we end up doing next. I write a newspaper column during trips, and I'm really hoping to be able to send articles and photos directly whenever possible instead of having to scam internet access somewhere. Worst case scenerio is I'll dump a text file/photo onto a SD card or flash drive and plug in somewhere.

Do Palm Treo's have spell check?

you think about getting a blackberry, may be easier, that's what I use and love it.

From a recent post on the pct-l:

PocketMail Group Limited announced that it will change its name to
Adavale Resources Limited and focus on uranium mining. The December 7th
announcement includes a statement that the company would seek a buyer for
its PocketMail Services, but that a potential buyer has yet to be
identified.

Text of the full release can be found here:

The person who posted that on the pct-l indicated that PocketMail has been focusing on uranium mining for a while, something I wasn't aware of, and something I personally wouldn't support by using their service on my hike this year.

Then again, if they are trying to sell the PocketMail technology off there might not be a service to use. This does give a hint as to why they currently do not have composers in stock.

Keep a lookout on Ebay. I got one cheap on there last summer.
