View Full Version : Anybody need some Tyvek?

I'm thinking of buying some Tyvek for a ground sheet and a couple of other things for my thru. A 5' roll 200' long and will leave me with a lot left over, so I'm thinking it would be worth it if enough people on WB wanted to buy pieces of it...5' wide x however long you need for $1.00 per foot of length. Sound fair?

I haven't figured out how much shipping would be yet, but it would be at cost and pretty cheap...just fold up the tyvek and stuff it in an envelope at the post office...probably like $3 for the envelope and shipping.

Anyone interested? If there's enough interest, I'll pick the Tyvek up this within the next few days and start sending it out.

WF,

I appreciate the offer.
If you only need a small piece, why don't you just goto a construction site and ask the foreman? That's what I did. Didn't cost me a nickel.

I just don't know if you will be able to get rid of all that as well as all the trips to the Post Office.

Who goes to the post office anymore? They bring you all the boxes/envelopes, you can print the postage, and they will pick it up. They better, considering that they raise the postage rates every 6 months!

there are 14 kinds of tyvek. it has many uses. house wrap is the one we want to use. there are many generations of the product, but the one they sell now for house wrap (in general, north may be different) is white/white.
i've made ponchos out of this stuff. use tyvek tape for seams. tent, poncho, pack cover, tarp, ground cloth, boot liner. nice to carry a peace for emergency.

Might take longer than a day to get enough responses to justify a 200' roll.

=======================================

Difference is "thickness" and the resultant weight. All other properties are the same.

There is standard "House Wrap" Tyvek used in the building industry and then there is ...

http://www.kitebuilder.com/inventory/tyvek.htm

So-called "kite" Tyvek is much lighter and softer than the house wrap variety. I bought some a while back and have been using it as my groundcloth every since.

Hope that helps ...

Just an FYI to WF and all. This guy sells it by the foot and charges $5 for shipping. It has some info for hikers as far as uses. Minimum 8 foot length. I think it's 3' and/or 5'.

I've been to that site before and I was thinking of ordering from it, but 3' is just shy of wide enough for me. I'm guessing the same is true for a lot of people, which is why I thought this was a good idea. And I wouldn't mind having a little extra to mess around with for other stuff, anyway. Thanks for the link.

Yeah, seeing that it's only 3', I have heard a few folks that just ran it through a sewing machine. The groundcloth doesn't need to be waterproof at the seam. but you can use seam sealer and sew it AFTER it is washed.

Some REI's have it in 5' lengths in the back. Just ask.

Just wanted to see if anyone else is interested in buying some lengths of Tyvek. I might not buy a whole role of it if there isn't enough interest...5' wide x however long you need for $1.00 per foot of length (so 5' x 8' would be $8). Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

So what have you decided on the biggie roll of Tyvek?

Or have you decided?

I also would like to know if it takes dye. Green, brown, whatever. Anyone know?

So what have you decided on the biggie roll of Tyvek?

I'm planning on buying a 5' x 200' roll this weekend, so I should be able to send it out sometime next week (tough with the holidays). If anyone else is interested, it will 5' wide and be $1 for each 1' of length. I've decided to offer shipping at a flat rate of $2 to make things easier and get more people interested.

I don't know anything about being able to dye Tyvek, but take a look at this thread (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28599&highlight=tyvek+dye).

My 3' x 9' piece shrunk way more than I thought after washing and it will now be too small for me to use as a ground sheet. Looks like I need to go with a 5' x 9' piece or just go with a GG SpinnSheet ground cloth.

Yeah, I read in a few Tyvek articles that it would shrink but didn't realize it would shrink as much as it did. I had cut my piece to 3' x 7.5' and after washing I was left with a piece that was 28" x 82". If I go with a 5' x 9' feet, I won't cut it at all before washing and just use it as it comes out.

Yup, I washed it 3 times on the delicate cycle in cold water as recommended and it shrunk that much. Blah!

I've used the Spinsheet before and it's great for the desert or dry conditions but it's not very good in wet conditions. Water comes right through

Funny how the Gossamer Gear people say it's "highly water resistant". I've also read articles saying that Tyvek leaks through in wet conditions because of its breathability and that it ideally should be used under a water proof tent. I'm going to be sleeping directly on the cloth under a tarp and when I arrive at a campsite that's wet, I need to know I can lay the sheet down and not get wet.

I believe the article I read was on the Hammock Hangers forum. After the first cycle, my piece was still very loud and not very soft. Right now it feels nice after three cycles.

I'm really confused on what to do as everyones opinions seem to conflict. Half the people say Tyvek is fine, the other half say Tyvek is bad and to go with SpinnSheet, etc. etc.

Tobit
01-09-2008, 16:24
Yeah, here's a direct quote from the article:

" This type of Tyvek is stiff and noisy when new, but if you put the Tyvek in a washing machine on the delicate cycle with no detergent for 2-3 cycles, it comes out soft and much more fabric-like. Washing this type of Tyvek does not seem to affect the water resistance but can cause some shrinkage. Henry Shires (http://www.tarptent.com/) states that 5% should be added to measurements to allow for shrinkage if you are going to wash your Tyvek."

Sly
01-09-2008, 16:29
I've used them both and found Tyvek to be adequent in wet conditions, but its still not as good as simple 2-3 mil plastic would be. Forget the spinsheet unless you're hiking in the desert.

I like the Tyvek because I can write Hiker to Town and Hiker to Trail on it for hitching.

Tobit
01-09-2008, 16:37
I've always found the 2 to 3 mil plastic a pain in the butt to fold and unfold but it probably is the best.

I am also considering some 70d Ripstop w/ a Light Urethane coat- Sold by Oware and Dave highly recommends it for a non-slip ground cloth. This is slightly heavier than the other options, the material weighs 2.3 oz. per square yard. Dave sells it by the yard in 58" widths for $3.30/yd. Dave makes really nice products, I bought my tarp from him, so it's hard to not listen to him. It's priced at $3.30/yd so it's about the same as the 5x9 Tyvek pieces offered here. I don't mind that it's a little bit heavier if it works.

Tobit
01-09-2008, 16:43
I wouldn't mind finding some Tyvek 1020 material. It is more water resistant than HomeWrap but the smallest rolls I can find it in are 60" x 10 yards.
