View Full Version : torch - new stove

couple of new stoves i built.
i built a slightly larger capacity 'gram weenie' or mini whitebox - (best i can decipher from web pics) on the right, just to try out.

the one i'm intrigued with the most is the 'torch' on the left.

http://lh4.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2Fayi6I3vI/AAAAAAAADp4/Qsqz_biIQNM/s800/IMG_4360.JPG

using these small bottles set inside one another. just enough room for a few wraps of fg cloth.

holds nearly 1 oz of fuel - i have to optimize the design a bit - i made it with scraps to test the idea.

no time to test boil yet.
i have some ideas for the torch to tune the amount of wick that is exposed.
seems to work well with my snowpeak 700 pot.
i have some larger diameter bottles on the way from the internet - might make a larger version for my snowpeak 1400 if testing looks promising.

timed a boil, after adding some half hole punches to the lower bottle.
not sure if it makes a difference - but i noticed on my test burn that the flame wants to 'droop' a bit about 8-10 locations around the perimeter. i thought i would take advantage of that and help out a bit by adding the half holes from a punch.

http://lh3.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2FxNS6I37I/AAAAAAAADsM/u3ZSDftfrXc/s800/IMG_4392.JPG

first test boi:
35 degrees F air temp garage
50 degrees F water start temp
cold fuel
cold air
cold stove
cold bmike!
used aluminum foil for a pot lid with my thermometer inserted.

2 cups in my snow peak ti 700 pot
1/2 oz +/- fuel (dispensed using my brasslite squeeze measuring bottle)
windscreen / heat reflector

100 degrees F @ 2:45
140 degrees F @ 4:45
160 degrees F @ 5:30
Pot Noise @ 5:50
180 degrees F @ 6:15
200 degress F @ 7:05
Rolling Boil 7:15
Steam and Shaking @ 7:28
Holding 210 degrees F +
Flameout 8:35

respectable results for a quick sketch, and they could improve with optimization.
i think this stove would work great under a heiny pot. (i don't use them... but might have to make one to try)
it puts out a narrower pattern than the gram weenie. probably burns a little slower.
will have to try it with HEET and a 1/2 den / 1/2 HEET combo.

will look for that spreadsheet on optimizing fuel use / stove design.
the version i have will hold 3/4 oz fuel - i'd like to up that to 1 oz so i can try for a 3 cup boil.

these little, tall stoves are tippy as pot stands.
thinking of making a low cone that allows the pot to touch the stove as if it were in normal use - but would stabilize the pot should it get windy or you wanted to remove the lid and / or stir or add goodies to your water.

it might also work better had i bought the snow peak 600...

If you are actually achieving those stats with 1/2oz that is impressive, I thought white box stoves were supposed to be rugged but not that efficient. If you could get hold of a syringe that is the most accurate way to measure fuel. 30cc equals one fl ounce.

running the stove efficiency spreadsheet now.
it is not a whitebox. i'm testing the 'torch' - to the left of the whitebox in the first photo.

2 aluminum tubes that fit into each other - the inner a bit smaller.
a few wraps of fiberglass tape act as a wick. the inner tube is drilled with weep holes.

i'll test my mini whitebox too.

just found a graduated dropper - so i'm running the tests with measured fuel.

Nice design, bmike! I never thought of a wick design like the "torch". Good results, but you're running into one of the main reasons why I didn't make the Gram Weenie taller; the added fuel capacity from any additional height didn't outweigh how tippy the stove became :-? . That's why I reserve that stove for dayhiking and SUL hiking where my gear kit is tight on room and my menu doesn't require large volumes of hot water. Good luck - I can't wait to see how it evolves.:sun

yeah... it does get tippy! the version of the gram weenie / miniwhite box that i made (see first pic) is as tall as i want to go!

i'll do some more testing and see how it develops. its cold in the garage - so i might bring everything in and let it hit 'room temp' to do some more.

need to optimize fuel and height to my burner.
also have to locate some heiny cans and see how that affects boil times. i love my snowpeak - but its thick compared to an aluminum beer can!

thanks!

The progression of a "Stovie":)

Nicely done Bmike. You're on a roll, way to go:banana

after 5-6 burns the exposed wick was turning brown and was getting hard - not sure if this affects the performance of the stove - so i changed the design a bit. i moved the wick down into the body of the stove...

http://lh6.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2HrSC6I3_I/AAAAAAAADtE/R9rowgnsjak/s800/IMG_4414.JPG

http://lh3.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2HrOS6I3-I/AAAAAAAADs8/LsfDbLyycsY/s800/IMG_4416.JPG

primed a bit faster than a 'normal' open center stove. as the center chamber heats you can hear it wanting to 'fire' the outer chamber...

http://lh3.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2HrMS6I38I/AAAAAAAADss/KHL4wH-g14k/s800/IMG_4405.JPG

http://lh5.google.com/mike.beganyi/R2HrMy6I39I/AAAAAAAADs0/rQdz3UXlVoU/s800/IMG_4412.JPG

seems to burn at about the same rate.
more testing tomorrow.

i think i want to take 1/16" off the center bottle... would lower the pot a bit and tighten up the flame.

Congratulations. You just built a tiny ROF. :D

if the revision tests out i'll probably ditch the half holes... don't see a real need for them...

hmm. have to search for an ROF.

Search for 'Heineken Doodah man'.

It evolved into the Ring of Fire.

got it.
took me a few minutes to make the connection... :)

proof of concept.
just playing around with a way to potstand / stabilize these tiny gram weenie / mini whitebox / torch stoves.
V2 is on the way but i need a run to the hardware store... http://www.bplite.com/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Now that's a slick idea.

Now that's a slick idea.

needs some refinement...
still fits in my snowpeak 700 cup... and adds a bunch of stability.
haven't weighed it all yet.
i'm not a gram weenie - yet. i do like my dinner or hot drink to stay put.

the rivets need backer plates, and if i do this version again i'll add JB weld to the rivets and plates before i assemble. one of the lower legs is a bit loose - so it pops and puffs as the stove pressurizes. looks like a nasa project gone wrong with that little flame sputtering out of the leg!

revised small stove stand / pot stand.
a few more tweaks in mind, and the next version i'll have a little more patience on the bending / folding.
this is a good direction - just need to lighten it and tighten it up a bit. stows nicely.

stove is working quite nicely. waiting on some more bottles so i can start optimizing height of pot to burner.
takes a bit to get going in the cold... its about 30 deg in the garage. alky is stored out there so its cold too!

Looking better all the time put a wick around near bottom 1/2 to 3/4 hi for priming.

thought about that... will do on the next version. to get it going in the cold i've been holding my lighter near the sides and underneath...

i can wait it out (takes awhile for that center chamber to heat), pull the interior wick up a bit so it gets some air (works well but burns fast!), add a wick to the bottom, or add a some priming fuel below the stove

will try the wick next time round. hopefully mr. postman will bring me more bottles today!
