Not sure if this has been asked before, but does anyone have a suggestion for a section of the AT in Georgia (I would even consider NC as well) for a 1 - 2 nighter, other than the area around Blood Mountain? Is there an area that's not as over-run with day-hikers?

Hog Pen gap to Dicks Creek gap would be my choice

What time of year are you planning the trip?

If you're looking for solitude, you could always hike northbound on the Benton Mackaye trail when it splits from the AT at Long Creek Falls.

I would second that if you want to avoid dayhikers in Spring in GA.

In early to mid spring, you will have thru-hikers to contend with in addition to day hikers, so the whole trail in Georgia is likely to be pretty active. The BMT is a good alternative, as mentioned in earlier posts.

I have heard good things about the BMT. I'll have to give it a try. I am fairly new to backpacking - this year I have done 3 overnighters - 1) the Chattooga River Trail/Foothills Trail in SC, 2) Dockery Lake Trail up to the AT/ Preaching Rock, and 3) a loop hike from Lake Winfield Scott up to Blood Mountain and back on the Freeman Trail. On the Dockery Lake hike, there were some day hikers going up at the same time, leaving a trail of litter and Cheese Doodles on the trail   . I'd really like to find some spots in N. GA and NC where I can leave the day hikers behind.

You're a great candidate for the BMT. :)
