View Full Version : sooty pot-stand
Dingus Khan 12-20-2007, 15:08 this is what i am using for a pot stand:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=70283-38797-16878&lpage=none
you may have to enlarge to see details, i cut away 2.75 inches of the screen cylinder. The OD is perfect for my stove and jetboil, however the soot prob is going to make me go pick up some hardware cloth.
does all stainless steel soot?
am i correct in saying that all types of aluminum do not, and will not, turn sooty?
I have noticed that my pot stand glows red and get sooty, where my stoves and pots do not...
it is kind of annoying and gets all over the place.... nasty stuff..
does hardware cloth get sooty?
ps i finally got 4.5 min rolling boil (3min "boil noise") with total of 7 minute burn time on 1/2oz fuel... water and fuel temp in 30's.
I'm a happy dork, as my wife calls me...:D
thanks for everyones help too... it has been much appreciated.
The best defense against soot is higher combustion temperatures. If the potstand is withing the flame but conducts too much heat away from the flame then you will get more soot. Reflective windscreens help. Pot stands that don't have too much contact with the cold pot or cold ground or cold circulating air also help. I don't think the type of metal matters other than heat conduction, in which stainless steel should be better in this case because it conducts less. Another approach to dealing with soot is to make sure you can contain it and pack it in such a way that it doesn't spread.

Nice find Dingus.
What is the size of the mesh opening. It looks to be 1/4 or smaller. Your stove is burning fast and rich causing alot of turbulence in the potstand because of the finer mesh. Kinda like a backwash effect. This is speculation at this point. I'll get one of those at Lowes and give it a whirl, not a bad price for stainless steel. Nice find, I'll check it out;)
Skids is that the same one you bought?

Yep, it sure looks like it.
I was able to solve the problem with EZ's advice but I suspect raising the pot a bit higher above the stove(taller potstand)would work as well and take less time and effort.
CoyoteWhips 12-20-2007, 17:48 Is it just me, or does Sooty Potstand sound like a trail name?

Or a good band name. Dyslexic version:
Pooty and Sots
Two Speed 12-20-2007, 19:21 Off the wall question Skids: did you try making any stands (other than the one you made for me) out of that SS mesh I gave you? I've fooled around with it a bit and haven't noticed any sooting, including using it for a sake warmer (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=20475&catid=member&imageuser=1339).

No, not yet. It's in the possibles closet waiting for the right inspiration.
I really do think that the type of S.S. makes a difference in sooting.
Two Speed 12-20-2007, 19:36 Well, open a fresh bottle of inspiration and get crackin', dadgummit.
Dingus Khan 12-20-2007, 22:39 wow, thanks for the link skids, too funny that you had the exact same situation...
since i do not have access to a torch and i have tweaked the height to match my jetboil efficiently, it looks as though I will have to pick up a roll of 1/2 hardware cloth. It just seems like such a waste since I will only be making one pot stand out of it.
And yes, it looks identical to the potstand skids had on his photos, 1/4 inch stainless bird feeder. 5.50$ at lowes.
But just to verify before I purchase, am I correct in stating that this WILL NOT happen with the hardware cloth regardless of the fuel richness and height, or am I going to encounter the same problem if I maintain the identical specs (2inch OD, 2.75" height).
If the height just needs to be altered then I still have the other half of the bird feeder to play with... :)
Dingus Khan 12-21-2007, 10:24 im going to try to burn off the impurities in the s/s as skids did with mrc's advice.
i do not have a torch and will place in on my gas range for up to 3 hours.... should warm the place up a bit and i'll let you know if it worked.
it may fail as the burner will not be nearly as hot as a blowtorch...
Dingus Khan 12-21-2007, 13:25 problem solved, minimum sootiness levels obtained... :)
20 minutes of being bright orange over my gas stove and it seems to have cooked out whatever was causing it..
thanks to all

A classic. It was on the 'Best of' Christmas special last week. :D
The video. (http://thetravisty.com/Saturday_Night_Live/wmv/Schweaty_Balls_(Alec_Baldwin).htm)
Dingus Khan 12-21-2007, 19:08 if i ever get a trail name, im not sure how i would feel about sooty-potstand.
i guess it COULD be complimentary...
