Can anyone give me ideas for a 1-man, 3-season tent that:
+ is lightweight
+ costs lest than $200 (sales work)
+ is not a tarp
+ hammocks may work
Also, did REI take Hennessy off their shelves?
Thanks,

I use a Clark North american Hammock. They claim that it is a three season hammock due to the pockets that can be stuffed to create insualtion and the addition of a weather shield over the bug netting. so far with a zero degree bag I have hung in it down to 9 degrees.

There have been numerous threads... nay, countless threads on this topic, and from what I've seen, the odds-on favorite in this category is the Big Agnes SL1. It's a bit over your $ limit, but I'd say it's worth it. Or you might find it on sale somewhere, who knows.
For somewhat less $ and a bit more weight, there are decent offerings from Eureka (Solitaire) Sierra Designs (LightYear) and several other major brands.

REI in the REI Outlet, type in ultra-light tent. The Alps Mtnering tent comes up.
I own this tent as well as the MSR zoid version. The price it think is under $70.00. I paid $200 for my MSR. The Alps Mtning is the same tent and is just as great as its MSR counterpart. I've used this tent in weekend long downpours in the North Cascades of Washington and always stayed bone dry.
I used the MSR on my thru in 03 and love both of these tents. Yes I know that they are 1.5 man tents but the true weight is about 3.13pounds and I at 6 4 have room for my gear, myself and my hiking dog in these tents.
Good luck happy trails

Check out Kelty line of tents. I've used one for thousands of miles and it's still good. Will be using it agian this year, for the third year, during my Georgia to Harpers Ferry hike. It cost $100.

AFAIK, the non-SL version is heavier, that's all. But 3 lbs. is pretty much the norm for this category of tent.

I know that quite a few people have moved to tarps, I'm just not sure about bugs and other stuff getting in at night. I personally attract tons of mosquitos.

MSR Hubba for $159; Hubba Hubba for 199.

eureka at dicks sporting goods.
For a solo tent, I still think that Sierra Designs had a winner in its Lightyear. Looks like it could be set up with only two stakes (three with the vestibule). I haven't used one, but have seen them set up at stores. Ventilation may be a problem in hot weather, though, and the vestibule looks a little small. Solid and inexpensive, though.

REI has some of their line for under 200. The half-dome is a 2 person tent technically, although if you're a bigger guy it isn't a bad tent to carry. it was my first tent, you might be able to find a MSR Hubba on Ebay or on sale for around $200 as well. Free standing and I've used it in a snow storm and multiple thunder storms, never had a problem. Highly recommend it!

The shires tarp tents with sewn-in floors offer as much bug protection as any tent you might use. Really the only difference is in the amount of condensation you can end up with IMO. But if the weight difference isn't a huge deal for you I would concur with the suggestion of the Big Agnes. I used a Big Agnes on my CDT trek and loved it. I'm trying out a WIld Oasis on my next trek.

I concur with everything Skit said in the previous post. I do have experience with a Tarptent Rainbow and several brands of 1-person double-walled backpacking tents.
If you don't mind the grey/blue-ish color, the Eureka Spitfire Solo (not the UL) is a stong and nice 1 man tent. Mine is 2 Lbs 14 oz in stuffsack. Cost aprox 80 USD.

How light is lightweight, is the question. Eureka makes a couple of solo tents under three pounds, but is that light enough? They are certainly cheap enough.
Shires Contrail, I think, is 199, and weighs about a pound and a half. I don't have one, but I hear good things about them, and it is on my list.
The logical choice for me was the Hennessey hammock www.hennessyhammock.com. Looked at the Clark and it is an awesome hammock but ended up choosing the EXPLORER ULTRALITE A-SYM because I weigh 215 pounds and are over 6 feet tall. I will no longer take a sleeping mat or tent and this hammock weighs in at a little over 2 pounds. Sleeping in shelters or in a tent as literally become a pain due to a couple ruptured disks in my back, the hammock should take care of my lack of sleep on the trail. It’s right at your budgeted amount but take a look and see what you think.
