I'm thinking about mountain biking this trail this spring. The plan is to do it in 2 nights and 3 days camping along the way. I've heard the Greenbrier is a great smallmouth river so we'll be fishing half the time.
Does anyone know this trail? Suggestions? Best places to camp?
It looks like there are plenty of towns along the way so we'll mostly carry camping, fishing gear and beer.

I have fished the Greenbrier, but use a a camp ground in Caldwell (Hart's Run) as my base camp.

I have walked parts of it near the northern terminus in Cass. I know someone who walked all of it and loved the hike. It would be a great trail to hike or ride. Have fun!

Which way does the river flow? I know some go backwards up there. I want to ride downhill.

Several years ago I cycled the whole thing in two grueling days. 40 miles is typically cake for me, but the trail was so ruff I was in pain most of the way.

I rode a hybrid, and the width of the tires and absence of a suspension system were wholly insufficient. While a mountain bike will obviously fare better, be ready for a relatively slow pace.

I can't remember at which site we camped, other then it was kind of muddy & cramped. Some sites are definetly better then others however.

Start in Cass, and be sure to walk around to the back of the large parking lot to see the locomtives, two of which are perpetually kept under steam.

Finally, be sure to bring a light for the tunnel & a camera. It is nice, and quite remote.

We took a short ride down and back from Cass last year and thought it was great! (Except for the trail surface, wore my wife down quickly.) Might have been the section that is also Allegheny Trail as we saw a few yellow blazes. We got to see a group of river otters frolicking right off the trail, we rarely see them so that was a treat.

is this trail all rail-trail (eg like the creeper)? I want to ride it on my cyclocross bike rather than a mt bike, but if there a bunch of rocks & roots, the the cross bike won't work.
thanks for any info

I Am not sure about the trail from start to finish... but to my knowledge it is all rail-trail... so very little to no grade & should be fairly gentle. Years ago when I Was in better shape, a friend & I talked about biking it, but we never did... then I got fat & it was out of the question... I am droppin some lbs again & thinkin of gettin the bike tuned & trying it. Every fall a bunch of friends & I get a rustic cabin on the opposite side of the Greenbrier River, just north of Sharps Tunnel. This is beautiful country, I urge anyone to have a look.. As far as the fishing goes... It would likely depend on the depth of the water... I hve been there when the water is VERY low & no place that you couldnt ford, & I have been there when its high & was afraid to cross it. I know there is trout in the river, & its stocked in places regularly with them.
